Advantages fast, Nikon build, flexible, professional tool, lens choice, relatively cheap for DSLR. great kit lens
Disadvantages weight, not compact, won't suit all photographers, risk of dust as all DSLRs

I'm going to have a go at a little bit of an unconventional start to the review - apologies to those who know most of the following, but I believe this information could be useful to those considering in investing in a DSLR for the first time. Disadvantages Viewfinder not as good as D80/D200

This is my first DSLR purchased in April 2006 from my local Jessops. I think I paid about £750 at the time including a 1GB CF card, and it came bundled with an 18-70mm kit lens. It took a while to get the hang of the controls at first, as I was used to "auto everything" compact point & shoot cameras. The camera comes with "scene modes" to help beginners get the hang of using it while they experiment with getting more control by using "aperture priority", "shutter priority" and even fully manual exposure modes. Advantages easy to use - quality of product -speed - just cracking! better than canon or nikon 50
Disadvantages Price but then SLR digital cameras are all dear! No memory card included

I purchased my camera just before the summer in anticipation of a trip to Venice - a photographer's paradise. Having compared the available digital SLRs it was so apparent to me that the NIKON D70S was by far superior in many respects. The size of the camera means that you can hold it without fear of it dropping or slipping out of your hand - I found other cameras too small. The feel exudes quality - there are no flimsy bits, the lens supplied (nikon) is a top quality lens - not a budget version found on the cheaper d50 or on the canon 350d. Advantages Solid, professional class images; fast
Disadvantages Not overly simple to use; small LCD screen; auto settings can disappoint

No questioning the Nikon quality..it's robust and solid like it's reputation but not the best buy in it's class for the amateur. I should state at this stage that I'm no professional although I do use the camera to back up my magazine articles so I hope you'll find my views useful. The D70s is fast and produces great images but you need a good understanding of light and exposure to get the best out of it. Disadvantages Menus not intuitive.

As a professional photographer for nearly 30 years, I expected to be dead and gone long before digital cameras could rival the image quality of 35mm film cameras, let alone my trusty medium format Hasselblad! How happy I am to have been proved wrong. When my £15,000 Hasselblad kit was stolen last year and the insurance wouldn't pay out, I needed an affordable stopgap until funds would allow a more expensive purchase. Hey ive been a Nikon owner for many years..and yes they still prove to be the best in the business.. but who expected anything els but excelence from the top photographic device maker.. they have been the Leader of the Field for many decades..and still are.. Well now to the D70s.. one word, Exelent.. its really what you expect from Nikon. and even the Entry to the Profesional market. it still delivers all the needs to the profesionals.. Quick review of Nikon D70s by Gregor54321 05/11/2007

I have had the nikon D70s for a couple of years now and find it excellent. It is my first SLR camera so don't really have anything to compare it to but everything I want is there. You can view some photos I've taken at www.gwizcards.co.uk although they aren't done justice by the compression on the site. I find the Automatic setting is usually perfectly fine unless there is certain effects you want or tricky conditions. I did try using a 2x converter (not nikon but a jessops make) which in my opinion doesn't really help as it is slow to ... more

Advantages Great battery life, and still a great camera. Now even cheaper to get hold of.
Disadvantages Not as many features as later models. Sensor can get dusty, though there are tools

The Nikon D70 and D70s were a breakthrough in performance/price when they came out. They have now been succeeded by the D80 and D90, but this does not make the D70 a less worthy camera. It can be noted that it is 'only' 6 mega pixels compared to 12 mega pixels of the later models, and even compact cameras have more MP's than the D70s. This should only concern you if you are making large prints though. It still uses a large and high quality sensor that will take very high quality photos, in comparison to even a new and expensive compact camera. If you are looking for a cheap entry into the ... more

I love this camera, it feels sturdy and well-made and even though there are many automatic settings and computerised components it feels like a traditional 35mm SLR which I love. We were able to borrow Nikon D70s camera all the way through uni and as soon as it was time to graduate I got one of my own because I loved it so much. I find the camera easy to use as you can pick it up and start shooting great photos without having the dig out the instruction manual. But if you are getting a little more technical the manual is easy to follow and understand. I've had this camera for around 5 years ... more
