Buying the Camera When it comes to talking about film cameras, the Nikon F80 (also known as N80 in the states) is particularly new as it came onto the market in the year 2000. In terms of camera models, that may seem like a long time ago, but with the rise and dominance of the DSLRs, Bridge Cameras and Compact cameras in recent times, it is no surprise that the film camera business is diminishing. Therefore, less of these kinds of cameras are currently in production. Many companies have even halted production altogether. The reason I wanted to buy a film camera in the first place was because I ... more

Advantages Advantages Lightweight and Easy to use piece of Craftsmanship

Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps not a durable as previous models

Nikon have expertise in camera manufacture and development that is not really comparable to other makes. They have developed their own metering systems and methods that others have just copied. The F80 continues this tradition and it really is a magnificent camera for both the Professional and the Non-Professional. Lets talk about ergonomics later and start with what this camera can do to take pictures - the reason for buying it! Firstly, any image quality you get from this camera is far superior to any digital camera if you are comparing two photographs taken by the same photographer, even if ... more

Advantages Advantages Quality camera, excellent range of accessories

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite pricey (oh go on, treat yourself!)

I had been looking for a decent SLR camera for a while before I finally decided on the Nikon F80. It is slightly more expensive than your average SLR (single lens reflex) camera, but with all the extra features, I think it is worth splashing out. Here are some of them. The camera When you first pick up the F80 you think it’s quite weighty, but when you consider how heavy SLR’s used to be it really is quite light at only 515g. It feels good to hold, some of the newer SLR’s in the same price bracket feel a bit like toys, for example the Canon EOS300 or the Pentax MZ-3. It is very ergonomically ... more

Advantages Advantages Really well featured, superb exposure

Disadvantages Disadvantages AF struggles with larger lenses

Nikon never seemed to be able to make a decent mid-range AF camera. You could buy a camera with a good feature set (F601) but the AF was poor and the motordrive painful to hear. The F70 improved the AF and was quieter but alienated buyers with it's quirky control panel (actually really simple but once people had decided it was complicated that was it). The F401 was an awful camera and the F50 very awkward to use. The F60 was short of features and AF speed. Yet the other manufacturers could all provide cameras which did the lot. The only reason to buy a Nikon was the lenses and the very ... more

Advantages Advantages durable, reliable, big viewfinder, fast.

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1/125th flash sync, does not meter with manual nikon lenses.

Like most people who have bought this camera in the last few years I bought this second hand on eBay for about £80 with a zoom lens, which I soon swapped for a 50mm standard lens. For someone like me who had only used digital cameras and manual film SLR cameras before, using this it came as a surprise to me how advanced this camera is, essentially it's digital in every way apart from the fact it has a film transport mechanism. It has a magnitude of setting mainly controlling exposure and focus setting such as being able to choose whether or not the camera looks for close or far away objects ... more

Advantages Advantages High quality optics, good range of features

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Built in flash

After many years using a fully manual, second hand Olympus OM30 I decided to take a step up and get a good quality mid-range SLR. The Nikon F80 did everything I hoped for. I did not have a fortune to spend but wanted something as good as possible for the price. It was important for me to have optimum creativity as I like fine art and abstract photography. At £379 (including lens) the Nikon is fabulous. With several different metering options, it is fully capable of tackling all lighting conditions. The autofocus is made possible in low lighting thanks to a natty small assisting light. However ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of features, sturdy build, quality optics

Disadvantages Disadvantages Price, weight, poor built-in flash

I replaced a 15 year old Olympus OM40 with this brand spanking new Nikon F80 and rediscovered my passion and interest in Photography. The quality of optics on this camera is very much in line with the Nikon reputation and is comparable with some more expensive models. The plethora of modes and features for focussing, exposure, aperture control making this a very flexible camera. In the program mode you have a very easy to use "point and click" camera which is ideal for snapping on holiday or at family events. The other modes allow you to use it in aperture priority or shutter speed priority ... more

    Advantages Advantages Pro specifications

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Made in Thailand!!

When I first adopt photography as a hubby I was disappointed that my camera then, which was Olympus IS21, lacks almost 85% of the specs and moves that I read about in photography books and magazines. Every time I read about a creative technique I run to my camera to apply what I have learned, but for my disappointment I was usually unable to do any of them! That was the case before my hands touched the gorgeous body of the F80! I’ve read a lot of reviews on many SLR cameras and there it was standing with pride between all of the others!! Nikon! Believe it or not the name can improve your ... more

Advantages Advantages Very quick auto focus and low price

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I bought this camera 8 years ago and I am still using it from time to time. I have always good experience with this camera although I use a digital one now - Nikon D200. With the standard Nikkor lens f3.5-5.6 28-80 it gives you well exposed and sharp pictures. The small flash light installed to the camera is very useful especially during the night time parties:-) Moreover it is very light and quite small camera so you can take it wherever you want almost as a compact camera. Its auto focus is very quick and very accurate with Nikkor lenses (I did not try with other lenses). All buttons and ... more

Advantages Advantages Light weight and easy to use.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The built-in flash light is not useful.

This camera is light weight and easy to use. Probably the best in the range. Is a good one for amateur photographer. Range of aperture and shutter speed is good enough for most of the picture shooting. Camera body is well designed. I like to hold it very much. The custom settings allowed users to set the camera according to personal preference. The single exposure, continuous exposure, self-timer and multiple exposure button are joined. This is not convenient for user where usage of two functions at the same time is not possible. The built in flash light seems useless for indoor shooting. The ... more
