Advantages Advantages Style, advanced technology , well laid out interior design

Disadvantages Disadvantages supply and I can't afford one!

Nissan's X-Trail went on sale in October 2001 . It is an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) aimed at both the medium and small sized 4x4 sector known as "Compact 4x4". It is competing with established vehicles such as the Freelander, Honda CR-V and Toyota's Rav 4, it is in direct competition with Fords new Maverick and Jeep Cherokee and is proving to be a huge success for Nissan. 50 years experience of building 4x4's makes Nissan one of the longest established manufacturers. Nissan have cleverly combined 4x4 chunky looks and a level of passenger car comforts and performance to give an exiting and ... more

Advantages Advantages A 4x4 that handles like a saloon

Disadvantages Disadvantages Diesel turbo currently an unresolved problem it seems

As a family man with 2 growing children, who drives a lot of motorway miles on business, and lives in the sticks where they dont grit the roads in the winter, I was looking for a car with a lot of room inside to carry goods about, which would be fun to drive at the weekends as well. The Nissan X Trail fits the bill perfectly. I chose the Sport variant with the 2.2 Diesel engine which has the 6 speed gearbox. On the motorway, the car is quiet, responsive, and the high seat position offers an excellent view of what's going on ahead. On more windy roads, the diesel pulls and pulls even in 6th ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks, space, comfort, torque , fuel economy for big vehicle, reliability

Disadvantages Disadvantages no cruise control, no on board computer (well I had to say something)

I bought this vehicle in may 2004. It is a cdi sport 2.2 diesel with the 136 bhp engine. I paid £19400 for it which was a fair price but no bargain, this was because demand was outstripping supply at the time. Looks For me it looks the buisness, externaly the lines are good and the rear spoiler adds to the look. The interior needs a little getting used to as the clocks are centrally located and not behind the steering wheel which proves to be a good position for viewing the clock. Performance and handling This thing motors. The acceleration for such a big vehicle is awesome. It is great for ... more

    Advantages Advantages Ride, performance, comfort

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Reliability, noisy

I have had a 2.2 dCi SVE from new for 2 years, and while the concept is good, the reality is tempered by some serious faults, several minor niggles and hopeless customer support. The Good. Good ride on most surfaces and excellent performance from the diesel engine. Reasonable gear shift and generally well placed controls. Air conditioning and heated seats are great! Amazing off road! Satnav excellent (but map update not available) The Bad The boot is not as roomy as the size of the car suggests it will be. The shiny boot lining is rubbish - get a liner as soon as possible. The hard plastic ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to Handle, New layout, Excellent all-rounder

Disadvantages Disadvantages umm...no button to fold the wing mirrors in

Well, I bought one of these babies in Februrary this year (2004), so obviously it is the new model. I've got the 2.2 Diesel Sport (136) in Silver (which has just been added to the colour list). To say I am pleased with it is an understatement really, and the fact that it recently came top in the 4x4 under £20k challenge on 5th Gear just proves I am not the only one. To start with, it looks good. Less square that say the Freelander, less bulky that the Hyundai Santa Fe, and less 'school run' than the Rav 4. It has a huge sunroof (obviously I can only speak about the model I've got) that tilts ... more

Advantages Advantages Practical, well built, more than capable off-road for most

Disadvantages Disadvantages Engines are noisy when pushed

The car being reviewed is the Nissan X-trail, Sports expedition model which includes a list of extras a: Satnav, rear view parking camera, climate control aircon, and a switch for the transmission, which allows the driver to choose between 4WD, 2WD, or 4WD with lock differential. The X-trail will also automatically switch between 2WD and 4WD when it detects a wheel slipping. Plus the added easy to open glass sunroof, made the car feel even more spacious. The Nissan X-trail is the real deal, when it comes to an off-roader. In my view its strong, its tough, capable enough to clamber over rocks ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages ....hard plastic rear storage area

After owning a new RAV4 (2001) there was always going to be comparisons made and the X-trail certainly comes up trumps. Rather than give the X-trail a glowing report, I will list direct comparison of the negs and positives between the Rav and X-trail. One of the most notable differences between the two is the spare wheel and boot opening. The Rav has a side opening with the spare wheel fitted to the door and this can be a problem with access when parked at the side of the road and a car has parked too close behind. This is also a problem if parked on a slope, the weight of the door can be ... more

Advantages Advantages Good driving position; ability to select driving mode

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I visited the Nissan garage wishing to exchange my existing Almera for another - until I saw the X Trail on the forecourt. I must say before I continue with the review the X Trail I bought is an import to the UK and contains non-standard equipment. The XTrail cost me £14,000 in July 2002 - the factor that the Almera I had intended to purchase was nearly the same cost I decided to go with the XTrail with its larger interior, superior driving position and of course multi-mode driving. The XTrail is classed as a recreational 4x4 - in other words great for the townie who does not need full 4x4 ... more

Advantages Advantages Comfy, roomy, high off the road and plenty of umph

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sad lack of facilities and information for the keen driver

Ever since they hit the market, I aspired to change my Nissan Primera for an X-Trail. I was impressed with their looks and the constant accolades they received from "What Car?" and others. I was also very impressed with they way they seemed to take to the road with consummate ease, sail past in the outside lane on the motorway and to glide over the road bumps like an elegant ballroom dancer! In October I had the opportunity to change my car and bought a second-hand (2004) 2.2 dci SVE diesel model. In many ways the car lives up to my expectations- it's extremely comfortable, the driver's seat ... more

Having purchased a 55 xtrail used sve 2.2 turbo diesel in January 08 with 16,400 miles we were absolutely delighted.Since the dateof purchase we have only added7,600 miles,to our surprise the clutch has burnt out.Needless to say we are now faced with a horendous bill that needs to be paid.If there are any other owners or drivers out there which have incured the same problem I would like to read your review. We are both middle aged drivers with 40 years experience each & not F1 fast get away merchants. Apart from this we feel the car has all the comforts & ... more
