Advantages: A fine book from a fine British Author Disadvantages: None of Note
...as James Herbert has in Nobody True. For this reason I number him amongst my favourite writers in the mystery and thriller genre with the sure knowledge that when I pick up one of his books I know I’m about to go on a dizzying journey filled with passion and heartache in fairly equal measure, Herbert really is the very best of British authors.
“Birth and Death are the two noblest expressions of bravery”
James True was a slip of a lad when he first ... ...Each of the characters in Nobody True is well developed and either had me liking them immediately or wishing for their undoing. The way in which James` daughter’s utter heartache is portrayed as she realises that she will not see her daddy again is heart rending as is his wife’s stoicism. “There is no cure for birth and death, save to enjoy the interval”
Why was that? Well, James Herbert has always been a very graphic writer in my opinion, on more ...

Advantages: Good story, fairly horrific Disadvantages: Twists aren't strong enough, not really pc
...At 502 pages, Nobody True is a reasonably long read although I did find the time went quickly as I got caught up in the story. It was interesting to note the way Herbert wrought significance from the title towards the end with a thoughtful reflection of those people who had apparently let the main character down. By widening the main events to draw in the bizarre circumstances surrounding his father’s marriage and the reasons for his mother’s cold, ... ...the title even if it may be a little late in the day as far as the story goes.
Some aspects of this particular book don’t quite work out. The obligatory twist(s) in the tale isn’t/aren’t really that mind blowing and the addendum at the foot of some pages proved to be something of an irritant. The narrative is also intended as something of a cautionary tale but I’m not sure that the characters ever reach the point where empathy gets the reader to ...

Advantages: A Great Get Your Teeth into Read. Disadvantages: You Will Not Be Able To Put It Down.
Nobody True is James Herbert's 21st novel and doesn`t disappoint us with this proud selection in his masterpieces of, horror and Fictional writing.
He always seems to be able to keep each and every new book fresh and new, with exciting new characters and events, usually building up into a crescendo of suspense and excitement.
I have been a huge fan of Herbert's for some years now i don't think i know a book i have been disappointed with.
I am ... ...what the book is about, i will try to "wet your appetite"but i don`t want to give too much away.
So here goes and i hope you enjoy it!
The best line and is vital to the book is the line said by the central character James True is "i wasn`t there when i died...."
Now this is a great little eye opener to get your interest in the book started and to make you think "hey hang on! how can that be?"
Certainly had me intrigued.....
The story revolves ...

Advantages: It has James Herbert's name on the cover Disadvantages: Repetition, ponderous prose, obstructive footnotes
...trepidation that I picked up Nobody True. And the opening line: "I wasn't there when I died." followed by the paragraph: "Really. I wasn't. And finding my body dead came as a shock. Hell, I was horrified, lost, couldn't understand what the fuck had happened." did little to inspire me. Still, I was without a novel to read, so I got on with the job at hand and have to say I struggled.
Whilst I might not have enjoyed James Herbert's more recent works, ... ...always readable. But Nobody True seems to be made up of a barrage of stop-start sentences and paragraphs full of repetition.
The premise of the book is simple: narrator or hero, however you want to view them, is able to have Out of Body Experiences, or OBEs as they quickly become abbreviated. On one such OBE, James True returns to his body only to find it horrifically mutilated, lying face down on the bed in an ocean of blood. Because of the OBE, ...

Advantages: Well written, back to the old form Disadvantages: Some may find it a bit taxing
...lets take a peek.
Nobody True, (don't make the same mistake as I did calling it Nobody's True, sounds easier) is the newest output of Britain's greatest horror writer James Herbert. Although I'm sure that I'd call him a horror writer anymore, supernatural, that's more the word. But even so he's moved away, like Stephen King into other directions. 48' and Others show that perfectly. Once of course did have that spooky supernatural gobliny stuff, ... ...he's gone back to the more human side of things. Now you may disagree with me after reading the book yourselves, please feel free to question my judgement.
James True is 7 when he remembers his first out of body experience (OBE, from now on), he happens to be choking on a hot potato when he finds himself floating above his body, it happens several times after but most notable of it when he is injured in a motorcycle accident when he is 17. From ...

Advantages: Another Exciting Novel From An Excellent British Writer Disadvantages: I Couldn't Put It Down!
Nobody True is James Herbert’s 21st novel and amazingly for somebody that has written so many best sellers Herbert has remained original and fresh.
I have been reading James Herbert’s novels for about 12 years now and still eagerly await any new releases.
This novel is truly original – at least I have never read or heard of any other books written about the concept in Nobody True. My intention with this review is to whet your appetite for the book ... ...work are also very thorough. Nobody True is based in London, as many of Herbert’s earlier books are, and he uses many common known areas which aids the readers visualisation of the story. Couple this with his very descriptive way of writing about not only the locales, but of situations and it also improves the credibility of the work in my opinion.
I am not sure that I particularly agree that James Herbert should be marketed as a Horror writer. ...

Advantages: Thought provoking Disadvantages: Bit hard going
Nobody True written by James Herbert.
James True - a pretty average person,five-eleven tall, slimmish, good mid-brown hair, blue eyes, not bad looking. Average - quite ordinary really. Except he has O.B.E.'s (out of body experiences)

James' body took over and fell down in a faint His soul had other plans and took the opportunity to exit his physical body for a mid air jaunt.
James had a few of these O.B.E.'s during his childhood and progressed to trying to initiate and control them. Finally leaving home and moving away from his over-bearing mother, who constantly reminded him of how his father was a useless man, who had deserted them ...

...trepidation that I began reading Nobody True only to find I could not put it down.
It is the story of Jim True who discovers he can leave his body at will. Returning after one of these Out of Body experiences he returns to find he has been murdered in a rather gruesome manner (Not recommended for those with a delicate stomach.), and so he becomes a witness to the investigation into his own murder and now free of his body embarks on a quest to find ... ...hideous serial killer who can also leave their body behind knows he still exists and no one else can see or hear him. During his investigation Jim also has to face up to the betrayals of his wife and business partners and to the realisation that things are not always as they appear. The story cascades to a fascinating and grisly end as Jim comes closer and closer to revealing his killer. I can't tell you anymore of the plot as it would give away ...

Advantages: Unusual body / soul possessions etc Disadvantages: Quite slow and boring at the beginning
This is a Shaun Hutson type gruesome horror.
It starts off quite slow and boring... like a crime novel - trying to solve the mystery behind a murder. The unusual thing is that the detective is the murdered victim!
Half-way through, the book it gets really twisted and has a very original storyline - involving possesion of dead bodies!
It is a bit like watching a horror movie. You follow the main character, deceased, who sees people getting killed ... ...scream at characters in a horror movie "don't answer the front door" etc, you will scream the same thing at people in the book! It is compelling... you constantly want to know what is going to happen next.
You may also, inadvertently, become attached to the murderer and sympathise with him/her in the end - at least I did! The mystery behind the killers reasoning is quite sad and tear-jerking!
It is an unusual type of story for James Herbert... ...

Advantages: James Herbert Disadvantages: Not on form
J.H. makes an homage within the book to the movie Ghost, but it was far too similar for me to give it the praise that I see has been awarded by my fellow reviewers.
This book for me was/is a good holiday book. I read it on the beach in Spain. I read it in 2 days, it was an easy read and it flowed. The story was typical Herbert in that it was subtle and easy going, almost light one minute then as a reader I was taken to a dark, malign, evil place.
... ...out of body experience and then having no body to return to was interesting although I have a nagging doubt it has been done before although I can not remember where or when so I am willing to concede that it might be a fresh new idea. The story of a "ghost" trying to protect his living family from a malign, murdering influence, either assumed or real was so similar to Ghost that it invaded my thoughts a lot as I was reading this book.
I found the ...

Advantages: Credible characters, believable story of the fantastic. Disadvantages: Couldn't put it down!
Some books just grab your attention straight from the start, and this is one of them. This book went everywhere with me until it was finished.
I know another reviewer has already quoted the first line as his title, but you have to read the next couple of lines:
I wasn't there when I died. Really I wasn't. And finding my body dead came as a shock. Hell, I was horrified, lost, couldn't understand what the f*** had happened. Because I'd been away, ... ...spirit, soul, psyche, consciousness, call it what you will - had been off on one of its occasional excursions, to find on its return that my body had become a corpse. A very bloody and mutilated corpse.
Now you really can not beat that for a fantastic opening, I am sure you will agree. If that doesn't just grab your entire attention I don't know what will. The story goes that the main protagonist, James True, has had OBEs (out of body experiences) ...

Advantages: Herbert really makes death come alive Disadvantages: opening chapters and background are a little overdone
As ever, Herbert comes up with some interesting and unexpected angles. Just when you reckon you know whodunnit, you discover...oops, wrong!
The OBEs (out of body experiences) which give links to the past and the background to the story are overdone a bit in my humble view. I felt that Herbert tended to be repetative often - especially during the first 10 or so chapters.
Briefly, the story considers the trauma (can you feel trauma when you're dead? ... ...business.
Add to this that it turns out that your wife and child are in mortal danger from some unspeakable (and hideously evil) thing - when does a person cease being a person and become a thing? Anyhow, Herbert is wonderfully descriptive and this person is a thing!
And further, your (previous) business partners could hardly be called partners!
Just to be contemporary, there is also an examination of the deceased's childhood - the effects on ...

Advantages: Lots of detail and an immense story line. Disadvantages: It ends.
Nobody True is definately Herberts best book to date. The star character is called James True (Notice the title) and the book goes through a detailed study of his life as if it was written by the character.
James True starts to experience OBE's, (Out of body experiences) and at first he is worried by the fact. Then however, he learns to control his OBE's and finds that he can detatch his mind from his body. Then, one night while experincing an OBE, ... ...daughter. What can he do?
Nobody True is a must read book. It's totally gripping and I couldn't put it down. The attention to detail in the book is fantastic and you really feel for the main character. The story line is also equally impressive and during the book James True learns of many deeply disturbing truth's. Buy this book now or you'll regret your decision. ...

Advantages: Guaranteed to give sleepless nights. Disadvantages: Vivid imaginations go into overdrive.
Nobody True should carry a warning: Not to be read by those of a spiritual disposition.
The first quarter of the book lulls the reader into a false sense of comfortable readability until the gruesome death of our hero.
As the reader progresses, it becomes clear Nobody True is hardly a novel for the coffee table, although reading the latter chapters in the company of friends will give courage to ‘enter’ the following chapters.
This compulsive read ... ...last, with a double twist.
However, the unlikeliest of effects occurs when the reader has completed the novel. Nobody True provides more than just a good read. It leaves the reader with much food for thought — and an overwhelming sense of compassion and forgiveness. ...
