    5 Stars “I wasn’t there when I died” Review with images 27/04/2004

Advantages Advantages A fine book from a fine British Author

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None of Note

“Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.” Few authors can write about life or death in such a dramatic and all encompassing way as James Herbert has in Nobody True. For this reason I number him amongst my favourite writers in the mystery and thriller genre with the sure knowledge that when I pick up one of his books I know I’m about to go on a dizzying journey filled with passion and heartache in fairly equal measure, Herbert really is the very best of British authors. “Birth and Death are the two noblest expressions of bravery” James True was a slip of a ... more

Advantages Advantages Good story, fairly horrific

Disadvantages Disadvantages Twists aren't strong enough, not really pc

“I wasn’t there when I died. Really. I wasn’t. And finding my body dead came as a shock. Hell, I was horrified, lost, couldn’t understand what the fuck had happened.” James True is one third of the True, Guinane, Presswell enterprise that operates in the hurly burly world of advertising. Having discovered the strange ability to leave his body at the age of 6, out of body (OBEs) experiences have been a regular feature ever since passing out in a Bournemouth boarding house having swallowed a hot piece of potato. Married to Andrea with a young daughter called Prim, James True tells the curious ... more

Advantages Advantages A Great Get Your Teeth into Read.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You Will Not Be Able To Put It Down.

Nobody True is James Herbert's 21st novel and doesn`t disappoint us with this proud selection in his masterpieces of, horror and Fictional writing. He always seems to be able to keep each and every new book fresh and new, with exciting new characters and events, usually building up into a crescendo of suspense and excitement. I have been a huge fan of Herbert's for some years now i don't think i know a book i have been disappointed with. I am hoping this review will, give you an insight as to what the book is about, i will try to "wet your appetite"but i don`t want to give too much away. So ... more

Advantages Advantages It has James Herbert's name on the cover

Disadvantages Disadvantages Repetition, ponderous prose, obstructive footnotes

James Herbert has always ranked amongst my top three favourite authors. For a long time, Herbert was second only to Stephen King, but more lately Dean Koontz has taken over that mantel. For me, however, Herbert's ranking in my own personal list of "world's best authors" is steadily slipping. Many of Herbert's earlier novels (such as The Rats, The Fog, Shrine, The Magic Cottage) or those of a few years later (Sepulchre, Creed, Portent etc.) are some of the best novels in the horror genre ever written. More recently, though, I'm finding that Herbert's novels don't match up to the quality of ... more

Advantages Advantages Well written, back to the old form

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some may find it a bit taxing

Take a big dollop of Fluke, a spoonful of Others, a pinch of The Dark and the tiniest drop of The Jonah, stir it up and you may well have James Herbert's new book 'Nobody True'. Or perhaps I'm being a little unfair on the whole thing, lets take a peek. Nobody True, (don't make the same mistake as I did calling it Nobody's True, sounds easier) is the newest output of Britain's greatest horror writer James Herbert. Although I'm sure that I'd call him a horror writer anymore, supernatural, that's more the word. But even so he's moved away, like Stephen King into other directions. 48' and Others ... more

Advantages Advantages Another Exciting Novel From An Excellent British Writer

Disadvantages Disadvantages I Couldn't Put It Down!

Nobody True is James Herbert’s 21st novel and amazingly for somebody that has written so many best sellers Herbert has remained original and fresh. I have been reading James Herbert’s novels for about 12 years now and still eagerly await any new releases. This novel is truly original – at least I have never read or heard of any other books written about the concept in Nobody True. My intention with this review is to whet your appetite for the book and not to tell you the whole plot as that would only spoil it for you, so I hope that I succeed in that…. NOTE: For the remainder of the review the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Thought provoking

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit hard going

Nobody True written by James Herbert. James True - a pretty average person,five-eleven tall, slimmish, good mid-brown hair, blue eyes, not bad looking. Average - quite ordinary really. Except he has O.B.E.'s (out of body experiences) The first time was due to a rather hot boiled potato that he over eagerly tried to eat whole. In order to save his mother any embarassment by making a scene, whilst burning his mouth, he tried to swallow the offending potato whole, schorching his mouth and throat. Unfortunately the potatoe had other ideas and lodged in his throat. James' body took over and fell down ... more

Advantages Advantages Unusual story, Good Characters

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of any

I had stopped reading James Herbert recently as like so many other authors (Steven King, John Grisham), I felt he'd really lost his way a bit and his books no longer sat on the edge of what be possible, but had fallen into the total squishy horror story. I had loved Creed, The Magic Cottage and Haunted, which this book compares very favourably with unlike The Ghosts of Sleath or Portent. It was therefore with trepidation that I began reading Nobody True only to find I could not put it down. It is the story of Jim True who discovers he can leave his body at will. Returning after one of these ... more

Advantages Advantages Unusual body / soul possessions etc

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite slow and boring at the beginning

This is a Shaun Hutson type gruesome horror. It starts off quite slow and boring... like a crime novel - trying to solve the mystery behind a murder. The unusual thing is that the detective is the murdered victim! Half-way through, the book it gets really twisted and has a very original storyline - involving possesion of dead bodies! It is a bit like watching a horror movie. You follow the main character, deceased, who sees people getting killed but he can't do anything about it... just how you scream at characters in a horror movie "don't answer the front door" etc, you will scream the same ... more

    Advantages Advantages James Herbert

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not on form

J.H. makes an homage within the book to the movie Ghost, but it was far too similar for me to give it the praise that I see has been awarded by my fellow reviewers. This book for me was/is a good holiday book. I read it on the beach in Spain. I read it in 2 days, it was an easy read and it flowed. The story was typical Herbert in that it was subtle and easy going, almost light one minute then as a reader I was taken to a dark, malign, evil place. The story of a man being killed when having an out of body experience and then having no body to return to was interesting although I have a nagging ... more
