Bought the Nokia 5100 in order to have a sturdy cell phone with IrDA and HSD.
Cover:
The Nokia 5100 is made of the same sheet metal and plastic as any other phone underneath the cover, so we won't find any special sturdiness here. The cover itself is made in rubber, which makes the keys quite hard to use (when e.g. writing SMS messages). The plugs for headset and poweramp in the bottom is protected by a rubber flap which will probably fall off ... ...information.
Extras:
The Nokia 5100 is shipped with a power amp and a headset with a built-in radio. The charger is unfortuneately of different standard than the ones used on 3210. The headset is made in a quality that just don't last and allready one wire is broken. The radio was good, though.
Two mini-jacks and a radio built-in the phone would be a much better solution.
The Nokia 5100 has a lamp built in which is supricingly useful. Only minus ...

Nokia 5100
-----------------
I was looking for a present for my sons 18th birthday and, as he wanted a new mobile, we sat down at the computer and searched through the phones that were available.
What he was looking for
Surprisingly enough, he wasnt interested in cameras, video recorders or MP3 players. He wanted something tough that he could use to text and phone his mates.
What we found
Well we found this sporty looking phone with a protective ... ...at a time in the Nokia 5100:

Advantages: Modern Design, Xpress on covers, Sturdy shockproof design Disadvantages: Keypad, rubber covering, on/off button
...this is not your usual Nokia phone. It's something quite unique. The first shockproof, colour screen mobile phone to be released in the UK boasts a number of features you would not find on a regular mobile phone. To start off with, a rather impressive LED flashlight, which takes no additional battery usage, meaning it can be used for up to 15 hours non-stop as well as the added extra of being able to use the normal features of the phone at the same ... ...you would expect from every Nokia phone, the 5100 being no different. Disadvantages:
1) A very stubborn on/off button, when used with the official Nokia Covers. You need to really push and hold firmly for a few seconds, which can cause minor discomfort and irritation to the fingertips. However, many unofficial covers, while being of a slightly lower quality, have a far easier to use on/off button, as well as being around half the price, sometimes ...

I have owned the Nokia 5100 for nearly a year now, I got mine as an upgrade from the 5210 at Phones 4U.
When I first saw this phone I couldnt really see why I would want it because its not the nicest of looking phones when put next too some of the phones on the market, but I wasnt going to let my first opinion make my decision I did actually want to get to know what this phone could offer me that my current phone couldnt.

Polyphonic ring tones

FM Stereo Radio The phone comes with a headset, which is needed to listen to the built in radio. The quality of the reception for the radio is really quite good also.

Advantages: Dust, shock, water and drop proof. Disadvantages: Very badly deisgned headset
Sports phones all started here with this! I loved the 8310 with its small sleek deisgn and radio, and when I upgrade last year, I just knew I couldn't go on without a radio in my phone again!
The 5100 has an excellent battery life, packed with features, but the reason I got it was I needed a sports phone that can handle my active life and handle all the shocks and bumps that go with it!
It's been on the market for a while now, but still stands ... ...phone anywhere near this one.
The one major downside is the headset for hands free and the radio has an annoying connection to the phone and is very easy to disconnect, and I miss the 1.5mm insert for the 8310 very much like the walkman plugins but smaller.
Still if you want a sports phone, this is the only one to even bother looking at! ...

the nokia 5100 is a doozy of a phone ,in fact i would say it's the best handset i've ever had. it should be sponsered by ronseal -cos it does exactly what it says on the tin !!
this phone is perfect for anyone who gets their hands dirty to earn a crust- its rubber case makes it oil and water resistant and shock proof, and when it gets scratched you can take its cover off and get a new one.
it's loaded with useful functions (calculator ,converter ... ...-a torch! the biz for finding the keyhole when under the influence!!!)
the most common functions are all hotkeys on the four cursor pads which makes it easy to use.
it has a colour screen which is quite adequate and with the optional camera you can take reasonable photos to annoy your chums whilst on your hols.
also whilst on your hols use the built in thermometer to read the temperature and then text it to your mates at home-always goes down ...

...uglier by the day. But nokia have made this phone ugly to start with - and it doesn't get any scratches. I've had this phone for almost a year now, personally I think it's a great phone. It does have it's downsides, some say it's ugly, I say it looks quite good!!!

It's a well thought out piece of engineering, but I'm sure most of what makes it a great phone is contained within all nokia phones now. One can compare it to a dyson vaccum cleaner - some real little, simple but helpful inovations instead of a bunch of useless gimmicks. It's kind of half way ...

I have now owned this phone for about 2 months and so far have found it to be great. Advantages: Water proof, shock proof, torch light, calerie counter, thermometer, sound meter Disadvantages: heard to use key pad / on & off switch
I love the torch, thermometer, stopwatch and sound meter and durability of the handset - as I have a tendency to drop my mobiles on the ground or in cups of tea. Most of my handsets havent lasted me 6 months but I've had this handset for years and it's still in perfect condition.

Advantages: Very robust, the torch is a invaluable, very good radio, amazing battery light Disadvantages: not very detailed screen, bit ugly?
I have had this phone for around 14 months now. The buttons do not appear to be as sensitive as they once were... however I may just be getting lazier. I much prefered the previous models buttons... a satifying click when you pressed a button. The colour screen is good, but not very useful as most of the applications could be used in a monocrome screen. I have not bought the camera attachment as it is not something that I would be prepared to carry ... ...would obviously be useful.
The applications are not particular useful, a nice gimmick though! The noise level and calorie calculator have been used only once or twice, the accuracy of the calorie counter is doubful. Apparently after two hours of canoeing I have burned a whole day's worth of calories. The phone is incredibly tricky to turn on, the spongy on button at the top requires a long thumb nail. The radio is good, although it is only FM. No ...
