'Darling buds of decay'
~ Northern Rock part 2 ~
Please Note : > This review is based on the Northern Rock fiasco <
Are we about to see more long queues outside Northern Rock again, like in September 2007? Now that the head of department has gone 'the fall guy'; we could now be witnessing a reality check credit carnage worse than Barings Bank. I am now feeling sorry for Mr. Adam Applegarth (the fall guy) which is highly unusual for me; as since ... ...happen since?
- The Northern Rock decay -
The onslaught regarding to market shares has plunged another 16% recently and has acted as another hammer blow to Northern Rock bank's survival chances, which is worth a bet by the way, for those wanting to reclaim some lost pension back.
This is when reality surely has hit the fan; despite all the hype and September media coverage stating to customers and savers that the forecast is good, and that it ...

Advantages: Easily understandable and good rates Disadvantages: Bit Slow
Northern Rock are one of the cheapest lenders around for mortgages and even if you have credit problems in the past they will still help you. We took out a together mortgage with Northern Rock some three years ago and opted for the fixed rate. Obviously like all other lenders on fixed rate if you decide to move or sell up prior to the end of term then there is a retention figure to pay which in our case was as much as £3,000. Anyway they tell you ... ...The only downside of Northern Rock is that as I said they are slow. We took out a secured loan with another provider to do building works and Northern Rock confused the whole situation to be honest. There was confusion as to what the property was actually worth. The property on the open market is worth what its worth, but Northern Rock only state the rebuild value when supplying information to the secure lender and this caused no end of problems. ...

...saw an advisor who recommended Northern Rock and he also informed me that Northern Rock could lend up to 30% more than the value of the property, which meant that I could consolidate my loans also, further reducing my monthly outgoings. I also had to pay a redemption penalty to my previous lender, as I didn’t stay another three and a half years to pay their extortionate rates. I ended up borrowing an extra £10,000 to cover the penalty and to ... ...twenty-five years, changing to a Northern Rock mortgage has given me flexibility I’d always hoped for in a mortgage. I went for an accelerated payment option which means that thirteen months worth of premiums is paid during every twelve month period but you don’t notice that you’re paying the extra as it’s already included in the monthly payment which is only £40 more per month than my old mortgage. I don’t know anyone ...

...to the adviser he recommended Northern Rock - mainly because they were the only provider who would touch me with a barge pole. Northern Rock were prepared to offer me 95% of the purchase price as a mortgage secured on the property, which meant they would give me £175,750 on a fixed rate for 7 years based upon an interest rate of 4.71%. In addition, they would also give me the option of taking out an unsecured loan or £19,250 that would be tied to ... ...ahead with the mortgage with Northern Rock and provided proof of earnings - a copy of my passport - the completed loan application and a cheque to cover the Northern Rock survey - £275. The survey is a standard price and basically ensures that you are not applying for a £500,000 on a house worth £10. This survey does not cover you for any structural defects so it is also adviseable to commission your own independent surveyors report.

I have been in the process of finding myself a new mortgage as i am about to move home. Having searched through several mortgage lenders i came across the idea of getting a mortgage with NR, considering i already have a load with them it seem a good idea to use the same company. I applied on line and within a few days i had a phone call from NR to discuss my requirements.
I was introduced to all the different types of mortgage available and each ... ...to offer the best valuie for money for me. Being a man on a not over the top salary i have to be carefull about what i fork out and within minutes i discovered i could take the current loan and mortgage and addthem together saving me £195 a month. Ok the mortgage cost went up but so dod my maximum allowed for my mortgage, at the end of the day i am paying out nearly exactly the same amount per month in total bills and moving from a £34,500 Endowment ...

...purchased a house with a Northern Rock Together Mortgage. The description from Northern Rocks' website of this mortgage is:
Together is more than just a flexible mortgage.
It gives you the money to buy your home as well as a cash reserve to give you money for the things you want.
All at the same interest rate.
It's ideal for first time buyers and it's flexible, so it changes as your life changes.
A together mortgage adapts to your needs.
From ... ...bigger place, extending your home and providing extra cash when you need it. Or simply switching your mortgage from another lender, to take advantage of together's features.
Why did we choose this mortgage?
We fell in love with a property that needed quite a bit of work carrying out (new kitchen and bathroom etc). This enabled us to borrow extra money at the same rate and over the same time period as the mortgage, but the loan was not secured on ...

...broker found a mortgage with Northern Rock which would lend us what we needed to but a sensible house.
I would consider our earnings to be reasonably healthy but main high street lenders were offering around £100K which for Sussex is pretty useless. Northern Rock offered us £175K which we took up.
Considering we were paying rent of £750 per month and the mortgage, which is fixed for 5 years at a competitive 5.89%, is going to be around £730 per ... ...able to afford this.
Northern Rock didn't fleece us with fees and charges lumped onto the mortgage as some other lenders do especially if they know you have no choice. They sorted the money quickly and efficiently and we are now happily moved in.
Would highly recommend them!
PS They also gave us £1000 cash for taking out the mortgage. ...

...my council house and used Northern Rock as my lender because of the excellent rate they offered, I also got a home improvement loan, what a nightmare that turned out to be, the retained half of my money until I carried out all the improvements which I currently had to get quotes. The surveyor sent the report straight ... ...anything, when I phoned them they said that they had changed their policy and they only needed a fax from my solicitor, I was rather upset at the fact I had to pay to get a survey done. Originally Northern Rock were very efficient with dealing with my Mortgage, and have great products for you to choose from.
They have one called a Together Variable Mortgage, where you get a secured amount, for your home, and an unsecured amount of 30% of the secured amount, and also a Credit Card with a £5000 limit, all this with the same variable interest rate, all in. ...bought my first flat with northern rock as they were very flexible on what they would lend me, offered an OK rate and were happy to take on my other unsecured debts at the same rate as the mortgage. This worked well and my first experience with them was OK apart from being charged for things out of my hands - I bought a leasehold flat which meant there was a management company who insured the building - as I didn’t insure with NR they decided to ... ...no choice over the insurance. They also charged me a £50 non payment fee for missing the first payment. ...my wife suggested remortgaging through Northern Rock's Together Mortgage.
This would enable us to borrow 125% LTV at one decent rate (5.5%). So, we arranged an appointment with an advisor at a branch, who was brilliant. We took in a spreadsheet to show what we could afford each month and how the Together product would, in our eyes help us out by paying off our debts. The advisor agreed that it would, and filled in our application there and then. ... ...(would have been a month but for Xmas). We've hardly noticed a change, that's how smoothly the process went.
Our previous mortgage was with Leeds & Holbeck. NR put them right in the shade.
The product is flexible too, offering a payment holiday every 12 months, and also the possibility to have up to 6 months off (for maternity etc). You can also take advantage of a 35 yr term - great for 1st time buyers until they start earning more!
Plus, you ...

...a fixed rate mortgage with Northern Rock at the end of 2001. There was a decent interest rate and the flexibility to vary payments to a certain level. The product itself seems quite appropriate for my needs.
