'Darling buds of decay' ~ Northern Rock part 2 ~ Please Note : > This review is based on the Northern Rock fiasco < Are we about to see more long queues outside Northern Rock again, like in September 2007? Now that the head of department has gone 'the fall guy'; we could now be witnessing a reality check credit carnage worse than Barings Bank. I am now feeling sorry for Mr. Adam Applegarth (the fall guy) which is highly unusual for me; as since his resignation nothing has changed. Northern Rock shares are lifeless in the market and scarcely rising to any form of normality. This is just 2 ... more

Advantages Advantages Easily understandable and good rates

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit Slow

Northern Rock are one of the cheapest lenders around for mortgages and even if you have credit problems in the past they will still help you. We took out a together mortgage with Northern Rock some three years ago and opted for the fixed rate. Obviously like all other lenders on fixed rate if you decide to move or sell up prior to the end of term then there is a retention figure to pay which in our case was as much as £3,000. Anyway they tell you all of this when you are offered the mortgage and it is all clealy stated in the paperwork that you receive. Initially I was impressed with how ... more

Advantages Advantages Very Flexible, Reduced years off term

Disadvantages Disadvantages Haven't encountered any yet

I have recently changed my mortgage provider for the third time in five years and unlike the first two, I didn’t use moving house as an excuse to change lenders this time. My old mortgage was getting very expensive and due to redundancy and a change of jobs last year, I had less money coming in than I had going out. So the main motivation for the change was my current high monthly outgoings, which included rather high mortgage payments. I saw an advisor who recommended Northern Rock and he also informed me that Northern Rock could lend up to 30% more than the value of the property, which ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages hidden costs

As a bit of background - I bought a house in late 2005 and after visiting an independent mortgage adviser I went through the options available to me. I had already seen the house I wanted to buy (£185,000), had no deposit and needed at least £10,000 on top of the mortgage to pay for building work and basic furnishings. After providing all the details to the adviser he recommended Northern Rock - mainly because they were the only provider who would touch me with a barge pole. Northern Rock were prepared to offer me 95% of the purchase price as a mortgage secured on the property, which meant ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages a little slow getting quotes in post

I have been in the process of finding myself a new mortgage as i am about to move home. Having searched through several mortgage lenders i came across the idea of getting a mortgage with NR, considering i already have a load with them it seem a good idea to use the same company. I applied on line and within a few days i had a phone call from NR to discuss my requirements. I was introduced to all the different types of mortgage available and each and every one was explained clearly, The together mortgage seemed to offer the best valuie for money for me. Being a man on a not over the top salary ... more

Advantages Advantages extra unsecured loan available, fixed rates

Disadvantages Disadvantages interest rate slightly higher than average

My boyfriend and I have recently purchased a house with a Northern Rock Together Mortgage. The description from Northern Rocks' website of this mortgage is: Together is more than just a flexible mortgage. It gives you the money to buy your home as well as a cash reserve to give you money for the things you want. All at the same interest rate. It's ideal for first time buyers and it's flexible, so it changes as your life changes. A together mortgage adapts to your needs. From helping you onto the housing ladder to moving to a bigger place, extending your home and providing extra cash when you ... more

Advantages Advantages Higher Lending and bonus

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None yet!

My wife and I wanted to get ourselves on the property ladder and, as many young people in the south of England, we found it very hard to find a lender that would give us enough to buy anything larger than a bedsit. Our mortgage broker found a mortgage with Northern Rock which would lend us what we needed to but a sensible house. I would consider our earnings to be reasonably healthy but main high street lenders were offering around £100K which for Sussex is pretty useless. Northern Rock offered us £175K which we took up. Considering we were paying rent of £750 per month and the mortgage, which ... more

    Advantages Advantages fixed rate

Disadvantages Disadvantages don't tell u when they change policies

I recently bought my council house and used Northern Rock as my lender because of the excellent rate they offered, I also got a home improvement loan, what a nightmare that turned out to be, the retained half of my money until I carried out all the improvements which I currently had to get quotes. Anyway the upshot was I was supposed to get another survey done on the property when the work was completed to get my other half. The surveyor sent the report straight to head office and for two weeks I never heard anything, when I phoned them they said that they had changed their policy and they ... more

Originally Northern Rock were very efficient with dealing with my Mortgage, and have great products for you to choose from. They have one called a Together Variable Mortgage, where you get a secured amount, for your home, and an unsecured amount of 30% of the secured amount, and also a Credit Card with a £5000 limit, all this with the same variable interest rate, all in. This helped me for my deposit for my first home, and enabled myself to update my home, garden, and car, also a Holiday, life was bliss. They still do these products obviously with lower rates at the moment. But beware when Re ... more

    Advantages Advantages Ummmmmmmm

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lousy service - small print

I bought my first flat with northern rock as they were very flexible on what they would lend me, offered an OK rate and were happy to take on my other unsecured debts at the same rate as the mortgage. This worked well and my first experience with them was OK apart from being charged for things out of my hands - I bought a leasehold flat which meant there was a management company who insured the building - as I didn’t insure with NR they decided to charge me £25 - a little unfair as I had no choice over the insurance. They also charged me a £50 non payment fee for missing the first payment ... more
