    For those of you who don't know what a firewall is, it's about time you did if you value your privacy, security and health of your PC. As the name suggests, a Firewall is a virtual wall which prevents anyone or anything from seeing what's behind it. It takes control of your internet connection so that all communication is monitored by the software. If something is about to happen which it feels shouldn't be happening, then it will tell you.     NORTON PERSONAL FIREWALL 2003 I have not written this op to be a definitive guide to Norton Personal Firewall 2003. I couldn’t do that. To put you in the picture I don’t consider myself to be a computer know-all. I know how to switch a computer on and how to use it. But if anything goes wrong I am lost. I use a computer every day at work and we have this (adequate) one at home and I do my best.     So an opinion on Norton’s personal firewall, I bet they all start with this is simple and protects my computer etc, etc, bla,h blah, and I recommend them to any one. Well sorry to disappoint you all but I think Symmantec is one of the most underhand companies I have come across. You see we are all in a state of flux with the new operating system windows XP. Every company is trying very hard to support their software with drivers that are freely available on the web to update their products.     I had Zonealarm on my study computer but it really slowed by computer up, when I would start it up it would take quite a long to load up. As a result, the modem and interconnection was slower too. You see my study computer is quite basic and quite old so I do think that may be the reason. Well, anyway as a result I have taken Zonealarm off which I must apart from slowing my computer was very good and replaced it with the Norton Personal firewall, which I downloaded from www.download.com Although, my computer is slightly faster I find that this security software is just as good, and at the same ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Occassionally prevents valid computer interaction through FTP.

    I've strictly been a Norton user for security on my PC for the past several years. Symantec, the parent company, offers top-of-the-line support and their programs offer wonderful protection for minimal cost. Norton Firewall 2002 is easy to use, requiring very little user intervention during setup. It's also very intelligent in automatically determining rules for programs that use the Internet. You will find that you have to have it set new rules as you install software with Internet capabilities, but this usually only takes a few moments.     Nortons Firewall is a perfect little program for your money. It costs around £30 and this version, version 2001 (2.5) is the best they have done yet. It has a very simple interface that allows the user to specify what programs are allowed to use the net and what aren't. For those that you do wish to allow access it creates what is called a "rule" a wizard will pop up that allows you to specify the exact details you wish for that program. Obviously it automatically blocks hack threats and has stealth capability for your ports, which makes them invisible to the internet and so makes hacking into ... more

    Hacking - a mystical art shrouded in mystery. Not so. There are hundreds, even thousands of programs ANYONE can download to "hack" someone. There are several ways to protect yourself... Firstly and most obviously - don't run email attachments, especially ones of the type ".vbs" as these are almost always malicious code which will do something, be it send out further copies of itself or replicate itself on your hard drive. I think the most useful thing for a Windows user to do is NOT invest in a firewall, but get Norton Anti-Virus instead. This will keep your system clear of viruses if it is ... more

    Norton Personal Firewall I've tried a lot of Firewalls. For a long time I used the free one of Zonelabs: Zonealarm. But still I didn't feel secure. And after a time using it I noticed that a hacker had been bussy with my computer. From then I didn't trust Zonealarm not anymore. So I started using Norton Personal Firewall 2001. When I installed it I thaught directly that it would be a good program. When you start the program an overvieuw starts up. From here you can rule a lot of settings. I will tell them to you.
