Advantages Advantages Too many to list in this box.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A rough ride for a couple of months.

BACKGROUND Well, after years of faffing around with other methods of contraception and an appointment at the clinic to discuss the options, I finally decided to get an Intra Uterine Device (IUD) fitted just over three months ago. Always wanting to know what I'm getting myself into, and what's going in me, I did some research beforehand over and above the, somewhat inadequate, NHS leaflet they plied upon me. There's lots of information out there on the information super-highway and I was very interested to discover that the IUD is the most common method of contraception worldwide. Over half the ... more

Let me tell you what the Nova t 380 is that might be a great start. About 5 years ago i had the Mirena coil fitted and did not get on with it at all basically it made me very spotty and moody and it also dislodged and i fell pregnant and lost the baby (so when i was looking in to contraception the Mirena was not a choice). I am 26 with 2 sons so was looking for basically a low maintenance contraceptive as i always used to forget the pill and lets be honest condoms are not the best choice if you are in a long term relationship. So after looking at all the options available i went for the Nove t ... more

Advantages Advantages No hormones, less pain

Disadvantages Disadvantages heavier periods, slighltly painful insertion

Right.... Where to begin... Well I won't bore you with all the details of my contraceptive history but let's just say I've tried most things and nothing works, I've been on various different contraceptive pills which all had their side effects, I couldn't have a cap fitted due to my partners latex allergy, we are in a long term relationship and condoms really do not work for us, so upon our 3rd visit to the family planning clinic they decided there was nothing left for me to try apart from the coil, and due to other medical reasons I am now no longer aloud hormonal contraceptive so a Nova T ... more

Advantages Advantages 99.4% effective, doesn't interfere with sex or hormones, lasts 5 years, practically no hassle

Disadvantages Disadvantages Tends to make periods a bit longer, heavier and/or more painful

I'm one of these people who simply cannot tolerate hormonal contraception, and since I'm severely disabled I absolutely cannot risk pregnancy either. Thankfully, there is a solution. Copper IUDs come in various shapes and sizes. I have a Nova-T380, which is the most popular IUD for women who have not had children. "Nova" is the brand, "T" describes the shape, and "380" means that it has a surface area of 380mm2 of copper. An IUD (standing for Intra-Uterine Device) is a tiny little thing the length of a matchstick which sits in your uterus. It is made of plastic, with copper wire (with a silver ... more

Advantages Advantages No contraception worries for 10 years

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not suitable for everyone

IUD FITTED: T-Safe 380 or known as the T-Safe Cu 380 Female - Age 30 - never been pregnant - Average to good health Well, what has prompted me to write this review, is reading about other peoples negative experiences with IUD's in general, and to try and balance out some of those 'horror stories'. After lots of research, I considered getting the IUD fitted was the best option for myself. Whilst condoms are great, (and obviously everyone should use them if you are not in a stable monogamous relationship) I do find them inconvenient. It's a common complaint from men, that condoms lessen the ... more

Advantages Advantages no more forgetting to take your pill

Disadvantages Disadvantages possible chance of ectopic pregnancy

Let me tell you about myself, I am now 26 with two children. From the age of 16 I went on the contraception Pill and tried various ones as they caused headaches and moody spells. I came off the pill when I was 22 to try for my first baby and after she was born I just decided to go straight back on the pill because being young I didnt really think that there was much else on offer. We quickly decided to plan another baby so I wasn't on the pill for a long time and 14 and a half months after my daughters birth my son was born and this time having two young children to think about I worried that ... more

Advantages Advantages Non hormonal, doesn't damage the ecosytsem and avoids ethical issues, lasts 10 years.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Periods were ever so slightly heavier, but not very hard at all to cope with.

I had the T-Safe 380 copper IUD inserted about a month ago. To give you some background, I am a 20 y.o. who is nulliparous and has regular, short and light periods naturally, studying full time at university (very busy schedule, likely to forget taking BC pills etc.) and I am in a monogamous relationship with my boyfriend of two years. I have never touched a hormone in my life and never wish to either. I am almost definite that I do not want children in future life as well so a sterilisation would have been ideal for me, however a lot of professionals would not follow through because of my age ... more

Advantages Advantages Never have to thinking about taking a pill!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cramping.

My Background: I'm a 22 year old mother with a four and year old child. Before I had my son, I had never been on birth control so after I had him, I wanted to make sure there never be anymore,"oh no's". My Birth Control Experiences: I started off with the depo shot (needle in your hip) six weeks after I had, had him. I was excited with this choice at first because like an iud, I didn't have to think about taking a pill, it was a simple needle and then I didn't have to think about it for another three months. Well my excitement quickly faded because after three months of non stop bleeding (and ... more

Advantages Advantages Can pretty much forget about it, no interruptions, can't feel it, lasts 5 years

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Pain on insertion

--Why?-- I got my IUD because I wanted something with less potential user error than condoms (or the pill), and didn't want to muck around with my hormones (and grow facial hair). An IUD is pretty much all that's left if you don't want to use condoms or hormones and are too lazy for fertility awareness methods. --So what is it?-- It's a piece of plastic with barium in it (to show up on x rays) wrapped with copper wire with a silver core (the silver makes the copper more durable) and two fishing wire like strings that hang out of your cervix. --Getting it-- I have to say that my doctor ... more

    Advantages Advantages very little maintainence...

Disadvantages Disadvantages side effects...and they can be nasty!

OK...so what is an IUD in simple terms? Well its a T shaped bit of metal with copper in it that is slowly released over a period of up to 5 years in an attempt to stop you gettin pregnant and havin a wee baboo. It is inserted into the uterus and has two strings that come down into the vagina. I'm told you can feel these with your fingers. I tried this method of contraception in combination with the pill for about 2 months last September. I discussed it with my doctor and after deciding that my terrible conception of time meant it was likely I'd miss pills, we concluded that another method of ... more
