Nurofen Plus is the strongest pain killer that is currently available over the counter without a prescription (or gun!).
I only learnt of its existence when I had the mother of all headaches a few weeks ago. I went on a quest to buy co-codomol; yet typically (and indeed annoyingly) the pharmacist had a billion questions to ask before selling me the analgesia. At this point she recommended Nurofen Plus.

Nurofen Plus is a painkiller manufactured by a Nottingham company called Crooke's Healthcare, and distributed (at least here in Ireland) by Boot's Healthcare, based here in Clonskeagh, Dublin.

...was stunned to discover that Nurofen Plus can no longer be purchased in pack sizes larger than 24, and the pharmacist is only allowed to sell one pack per customer - I knew I hadn't seen my beloved holiday pack of 72's available, but thought this was just a stock shortage. It transpires that the reason behind this change of heart and legislation is all to do with junkies!!!! - would you believe that they have been splitting the tablets and extracting ... ...here shortly.

Nurofen is about the most effective pain reliever available today over the counter. You can also get an extra strength painkiller version called Nurofen Plus. That is what this opinion is about.
The tablets come in packs of of 12,24 or 48 which is handy as you can plan your purchase around your illness. If you have a severe headache that should be gone in the morning, you only need the small packet. Obviously longer illnesses should consult a doctor.

What does it contain:

Nurofen Plus is probably one of the best known and best selling over the counter pain killers on sale. The 'Plus' refers to the addition of codeine to Nurofen to make it a bit stronger. Used in pain relief of headaches and migraine, backache and muscle pain, fever, flu and cold symptoms and to reduce swelling it is a good all round drug.
What maybe isn't so commonly known is Nurofen is just a brand name for ibuprofen (the generic/non brand form) ... ...codeine. Being a brand name, Nurofen is only made by Crookes Healthcare, where as ibuprofen can be made by any manufacturer. Therefore you can usually get the same thing alot cheaper by getting a supermarkets own brand. By law, generics have to have the same ingredient and have the same effectiveness as the brand name so if you buy Tesco's own, it will be as good.

It all started at a party last night. My local nightclub/pub has just redesigned it’s layout and Darling Hubby and I went along to the opening. Actually, DH had very little choice as he is resident DJ there and had to work. Don’t worry, it didn’t stop him from sampling the beer (and the cocktails, and the shooters, and the champagne!) ... ...a lot less wibbly. Nurofen rock!! They are in my humble opinion, the best pain relief/dewibblers on the market. Quick acting and reasonably cheap (about £2.49 for 8), they sort out all my aches and pains as well as being excellent for period agonies, (sorry had to put that in, was going to call it blob pain as that’s how DH refers to it…you know, “How’s the missus?” , “Oh she’s on the blob”. My husband is waiting for an appointment to have his wisdom tooth removed in hospital because it has an abcess behind it.
In the meantime he just took paracetamol to try and stop the pain.
They didn't work and he was in agony.
The dentist prescribed anti biotics but the pain was excruciating.
I went to Boots the Chemist and they said the best thing to take was Neurofen Plus.
You can take up to six in a day but no more.
He tried two staight ... ...He has now been taking them for two weeks and the pain is very mild compared to what it was.
He can cope a lot better until the appointment comes through.
The only thing is the expense of the tablets, they cost about £4.49 for 24 and because he was taking six a day it was costing us a bomb.
We then decided to buy 48 which came to £7.49 which was better value.
The tablets have brought relief to my husband and he can manage the day a little bit ...

...you need to know about nurofen is that it contains neither of these. It's main painkilling ingredient is a third compound called Ibuprofen, and this is the stuff that does the business.
And boy does it work. Period pains, headaches, unspecified feeling-crapness, they will all disappear. Once I discovered this, I took them like smarties, knocking them back at the slightest hint of pain, and they never failed me. However, I was spending a lot of money, ... ...I now don't take it any more. I got sick of spending so much money, and my sister informed me of something that I'm sure a lot of you know: since nurofen's patent ran out, ibuprofen has been available in generic form at a fraction of the price. You can buy Boots own brand for a third of what neurofen would cost and it works just as well, and you can buy in bulk (100 at a time) which reduces the cost still further. I've been using Nurofen plus for about 6months after the doctor recommended it as an additional painkiller to my prescription. I've found it has good analgesic (pain relieving) properties, and it just about does the job. Each tablet contains 200mgs of Ibuprofen and 12.8mgs of Codeine Phosphate. Having taken solely Ibuprofen, and at a high dosage, previuos to taking the Nurofen plus, I am assuming it is the codeine phosphate which I find the most ... ...the prescription requirement for that drug, meaning that this is basically as much Codeine Phosphate you can get without going to the doctors.
I have, in the last few weeks, tried Solpadeine Max, which i have found to be a much more effective analgesic. This contains the same dose of Codeine Phosphate, but has 500mgs of Paracetamol instead of the Ibuprofen.
Both are very strong pain killers,whichever you personally find to be most efefctive,and ...

Quite recently I began suffering from incredible sharp, and continous shoulder pain, that quite simply was not being relieved by paracetamol. As a result I then tried ibuprofen and found that it did the trick almost immediately. Brufen works as it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent and so acts to inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes that give rise to inflammation and pain that the sufferer experiences.
