Advantages: Full semi-pro SLR functionallity, fraction of the cost of an E520 Disadvantages: Only 8 Megapixel and possibly a little slower than the 520
...two generations behind the current Olympus SLR offerings, it’s still a remarkably competent piece of kit– the fact that the newest equipment offers ‘more for less’ means older models can be had on the second hand market at very reasonable prices (although that’s tough luck if you’re selling!)
A typical E-500 body will set you back around £150 on Ebay these days (March 2009) – little more than a high-spec compact, but what does that mean in terms ... ...already had a collection of Olympus compatible lenses, the bayonet mount on the current range of cameras isn’t directly compatible – although adapters are available for manual lenses for around twenty quid on Ebay.
At it’s heart is an 8 megapixel sensor – current models in the Olympus range are 10 – to be honest though – it’s unlikely that you’d notice a great deal of difference in about 80% of shots.
Noise reduction on the camera is supposedly ...

...loved the crispness of the Olympus lenses.
This camera is a great \'do-it-all\' machine. It\'s simple to use, it has some great features which are easy to find and it looks sexy. The images it produces are sharp and usually have great colour rendition. A good point is that it has two different memory card holders using exactly the same type of cards as the Fuji meaning it is a good step up for Fuji owners who don\'t want to have to buy replacement ... ...40-150mm lenses and also the Olympus Fl-36 flash. All the products have performed perfectly and given me some great shots. Operating the camera can be as complicated or simple as you want. There is an idiot mode which will give you great point and shoot images or there is the ability to control every aspect of the camera exposure. Somewhere in the middle are varying degrees of fun.
Battery life is incredible. The camera will last for ages and ages ...

Advantages: Superb quality Photo's Disadvantages: Increased noise at high ISO's
I've owned an Olympus E500 for two years now and can only say good things about it!
I've found it takes superb photos at a very high quality. It sits comfortably in the hand, and has a nice weight to it, something which can be lacking in some of the other models on the market. The only slight draw back is the level of noise when shooting at high ISO's, typically above 500. However this isn't an issue most of the time.

I recently took it travelling with me on a gap year, and looking through my photos on getting home I felt like I was back in all the places I'd visited!

Advantages: Light weight, good range of functions, dust reduction system. Disadvantages: Only just adequate in low light conditions.
I bought this camera around 18 months ago and have found it to be reliable so far. The 'dust shake' mechanism that activates when you switch it on helps prevent dust build-up on the sensor which has to be a major plus point.
This is my first digital slr although I am familiar with film slr cameras and, also, basic compact digital cameras. I found that the transition to more advanced digital photography relatively simple with the E500.
The E500 ... ...it impinges on the ingegrity of the camera. The photographer is in control of complexity of use:from fully manual to automatic with useful priority modes in between. There are also 'scene' modes......effictively automatic settings which are tailored to very particular situations eg.'Night and Portrait' and 'Beach or snow'. I have also found the 'documents' mode to be useful and have produced some images which are almost as clear and printable as ...

Advantages: Light weight, quite easy to use Disadvantages: detailed manual comes as a disk no hard copy
...on line I found the Olympus E-500. I have to say what attracted me was the complete outfit that came with it. Camera body, 17.5-45mm zoom lens, 40-150mm zoom lens. 1GB memory card, compact photo printer and a bag to bring it all home in. (I also did a deal with a different printer and got a rechargeable battery and charger thrown in, and extra money off)

It has its built in fill-in flash and also has a 'traditional hot shoe' (unlike Minolta). The picture can be taken up to 8-mega pixels, stored also as tiff files, raw files or a mixture. There are some negatives with this camera, maybe a little of my ignorance as well. Having had digital cameras ...

Quick review of Olympus E-500
Excellent entry level digital SLR. I bought it with a 17-35mm lens and 40-70mm lens. These are really all you need to get started. The range of accessories available is vast from with extra lenses, to flashguns. The 8 million megapixel sensor is what you would expect from an entry level camera, with its noise in low light being quite high. Working at around ISO 400, excellent photographs can be captured. The pop up flash is also surprisingly good. All in all, I would recommend this camera as a great entry level SLR for the photographer wishing to take that step up from compact cameras. ...

Advantages: Compact, lightweight, good quality Disadvantages: none yet
I have always had Olympus SLR's so I may be biased. I brought an E-500 in December and must say I am impressed. It has more than the average user could ever need, whilst at the same time has easy to use functions.
The more I use it the more I find out. I love the ability to configure the settings for various situations, but it is also great the way that the built in scene modes and program modes cater for most situations.
As far as instructions, ... ...on screen tips.
The Olympus Master imaging software is also a neat performer and for those occaisions when more detailed editing is required there is the ability to link it to an external program.

I bought this camera 2 months ago with 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses - as an excellent package deal. Note the package details when buying as it is also offered with a single lens or body only. There are various package deals available but check if the re-chargeable battery pack is included as it is expensive if bought separately. The camera is easy to use, even for one with no digital experience, but offers the quality and scope of a semi-professional ...

Advantages: Exc ellent quality, easy to use, good price Disadvantages: Lenses can be very expensive
Recommend this camera strongly. Plenty of options to play with but for the beginner you can get very good results just by setting the camera to "Auto".
However be very careful to check what is included in your package. The 14-42 lens is a better quality lens than the 17.5-42 lens which is a much cheaper lens. Also, some packs dont include rechargeable batteries, instead using 3 x CR123 batteries which cost £5+ EACH.
Best value option is the twin ... ...If you plan to do sports photography this probably isnt the camera for you with a maximum of 2.5fps. Also if you are likely to need a large zoom bear in mind that the high zoom telephoto lenses can cost £5000!
The E400 is the later model than the E500 which can cause confusion. They released the E300, E500, E330, E400!
If you want an SLR that offers a live preview on screen the E330 is the only camera to offer this. ...
