Advantages: weatherproof stylish body, easy to use, accurate images, good battery life, reasonable price Disadvantages: lack of manual modes, accidentally changing mode
The MJU range from Olympus is a series of stylish ultra-compact film cameras which has been so hugely successful that they have launched the same line in a digital range to give the user all the advantages of the MJU cameras but with digital capabilities rather than film. The film v digital debate is something I could talk about for hours but I won’t, at the end of the day it’s down to what you personally prefer and for what you need. With so much ... ...of camera you go for. Olympus currently has the MJU 300 digital and the MJU 400 digital, with the main difference being, of course, the extra megapixel. I am reviewing the Olympus MJU 300 digital.
~~~DESIGN~~~
The first point to note is the stylish appearance of the camera, when handled it has a sturdy metallic feel about the body but despite the solid feel it is still a light camera. It also has a very compact design; it’s a lot smaller than similar ...
Advantages: Stylish, easy to use, packed with features Disadvantages: memory incompatible with previous models
Olympus have come up trumps again with this beautifully engineered digital camera, and whilst I never originally set out to specialise in reviewing cameras, this turns out to be my seventh to date.
Digital camera technology is proceeding at a ferocious rate - hardly a month goes by without a new clutch of 'stronger faster better more' models from all the camera manufacturers - this is rather more to do with being a market driven commodity.
The ... ...and any other similarly priced Olympus camera produced in the past two years or so - which is only true to a point.
The Olympus Mju (pronounced 'mew') 300 ties the camera, in name at least, to the already popular and well respected film camera range - and justifiably so, I say.
Canon have already done this with the 'Ixis' range, which come in film and digital formats.
Olympus market the Mju 300 in their 'Stylish' range of cameras - this is doublespeak ...
...with my choice of the Olympus mju 300 Digital. I got an excellent deal on the camera, the standard retail price of which was around £270. I took advantage of Jessops’ excellent price match policy, and they matched the cheapest price I had managed to find on the intenet: £215, making a substantial saving and getting very good value for money on this well specified camera. I shall run through the camera’s features, commenting where appropriate!:
Apparently these new cards may be read from and written to more quickly than rival types, though I have no personal experience of this. The cards are a little more expensive than alternative types, but not excessively so. The camera came with only a 16MB card (capable of storing 6, or 20 pictures on the top two resolutions respectively), so I purchased two 128MB cards for a total of about £70, which ...
...I decided to get the Olympus mju-300. It is a very stylish little camera that is weatherproof and I now don’t know how I lived without it.
Taking photos.
This camera not only looks good, but is small enough to fit easily into my handbag, so I carry it everywhere. That means I never miss taking a photo of the unprompted little things that the children do.
Editing pictures
The software supplied was excellent. I haven’t used the full range of options, and it isn’t a substitute for full picture editing software (if that’s the way you want to go), but it is very easy to use. I regularly use it to crop and rotate my photos. What ...
The software that was supplied was simple enough to setup on my PC and was just about adequate for basic needs, I upgraded to the Pro option, which takes approx 20 minutes and is just a case of downloading the upgrade after paying for it, the link to carry out the upgrade is emblazoned on the original software. Advantages: Showerproof. Great pictures. Fast transfer. Works OK with my 512Mb XD card. Reasonably quick autofocus and flash Disadvantages: Build quality concerns: Plastic switches. Weak zoom switch. Silver colour soon wears -off all switches. Sliding front has switch which often fails due to dirt/dust. Noticably slower startup when using a large (512Mb) card. Short videos. No sound.
The Olympus Mju300 3.2 MegaPixel proved a fine camera for my recent 12 months of backpacking around the world. My selection criteria was for a strong, compact , metal bodied, shower proof camera, with a compact multi-voltage charger, good optics, a reasonably quick auto focus at a keen price. I chose Olympus since they are and have always been a camera maker (as opposed to Sony or Casio et al) so should know a thing or two about lenses and camera ... ...Fortunately the excellent local Olympus service centre in Christchurch replaced the entire camera's back in a jiffy. Metal bodied camera…. plastic buttons. Olympus take note.
This camera takes both Fuji or Olympus XD cards but comes equipped with a disappointing 16Mb card which only stores 6 pictures in the maximum "Super High Quality" (2048 x 1536 pixel) mode. I recommend dropping the resolution however, particularly when on the road, to SQ1 "Super ...
Coming with the new style memory card, an XD-Picture Card, you can take pictures up to 3.2 mega pixels, enabling you to store up to 99 pictures on a 16mb memory card, bearing in mind that the lower the resolution, the poorer the quality. This opinion leaves out all of the technical details and concentrates on usability.
( I have looked at the other opinion listed and it gives a full technical breakdown)
First of all, the comments I hear when other people look at the camera are 'Wow, that is a really neat camera' *1st disadvantage* You get this comment because you don't get a case with it.
You switch the camera on by sliding open the lens cover. This was a camera I had drooled over for a couple of years then I won £80 when Hedge Hunter won the Grand National so treated myself.
Anyone who has not tried digital photography is in for a real treat. The bliss of taking holiday snaps - you know, that one off that is so memorable - and knowing straight away how it has come out. It has zoom when you take ipictures but you can also use zoom on the picture you have taken so the magnification is vast. Even so it is possible to get really good quality pictures using the doubled zoom effect.
This is a very nice sleek professional digital camera. With very impressive pixel count of 3.2 million pixels. The Optical zoom really does help with the picture quality as it doesnt lose quality on zoom in (unlike digital zoom). Digital Zoom is also available in the optoins menu, but reflects badly. Good digital still camera for around the house, or glove box.
