One Child Unloved, One Child Now Loved

Advantages: Eye Opener and heartwrenching
Disadvantages: Disbelief in the evil of ignorance

...book is not an easy one to have chosen for a first time try at book reviews. In a normal book review you can tell more of the contents of the story and characters and give more insight into what was happening what the characters were doing etc etc. But with this book, there so much happening, too much activity in the book to describe it all. It would have been nice to have given more into what happened but you really have to read the book to understand ...
...very disturbing. This is not one of your everyday type of book you can pick up, read and put down, this book haunts you for days afterwards. I only hope I do justice to the Author. THE AUTHOR Torey Hayden, is by profession an American teacher, and educational psychologist, who's pupils have severe mental handicaps and emotional disorders. Children that have been "past on" as being beyond help. Though her books she tries to illistrate the speical ...

...take a break. One Child is one of those books ive mentioned above, but this one is in a class of its own. It is written from a teacher’s perspective, someone who dealt with issues we as humans hope we never encounter. After seeing it on a shelf in Tesco for £2.89 there was no questioning that I would buy it, it entered the trolley without a second thought. Torey Haden is a teacher who deals with those children who are deemed unreachable by society, ...
...For me this book was one of the hardest books ive attempted to read, although I was engrossed in every page at times it was difficult to read with the precise details of the kind of abusive Sheila suffers in her young life and the tragic effects it has had on her. Despite the tragic events which unfold throughout the book it is a truly enjoyable and fascinating read, one which had me truly engrossed and captivated by this young girls plight to be ...

One of the most disturbing books I've ever read!

Advantages: A book you won't want to put down!
Disadvantages: Deals with child abuse which some may find disturbing.

...------------ The story ------------ One Child is Torey's first published book. In it no details are changed including names of characters which all adds to the reality of it all. Torey is drafted in to teach the "garbage class" which was the affectionate(?) name that was given to the class where the children didn't quite fit into any other class, these were classes for the emotionally disturbed, for the physically handicapped, behaviour disorders ...
...try to mainstream them into one of the other classes eventually. Torey had to have a full time aide, who came in the guise of Anton, he was a 29 yr old Mexican/American who spoke more Spanish than English and hadn't even graduated from high school. Torey had no choice but to accept him. The 8 children who arrive on the first day of school are Peter, an 8 year old who had a neurological disorder and was prone to severe seizures and could be quite ...

One child, our child.

Advantages: Easy to read, inspirational
Disadvantages: none

'We looked at one another. Her name was Sheila. She was six and a half, almost;a tiny mite of a thing with matted hair, hostile eyes and a very bad smell. I was surprised she was so small, I had expected something bigger. The three-year-old must have been nearly as old as she was. Clad in worn denim overalls and a well faded boy's T -shirt, she looked like one of those kids from the Save The Children ads.' As a mother of two children with special ...
...mind of a child. One child tells the story of Sheila, a six year old who thinks the world holds nothing for her. She never laughs, she never cries. Abandoned by her mother on a highway in America at the age of four, Sheila has been abused and is definitely out of control. When Sheila ties a little boy to a tree and sets fire to him the state decides she should be hospitalized in an institution, but places are scarce and there is a waiting list. ...

A Burning Concern

Advantages: A very informative book as far as the mind of a disturbed child goes
Disadvantages: Very moving and upsetting at many points

...classes were sacrificed, including the one Torey taught during the period she describes to us. So many of the officials just don't give a damn about those who need a little bit more attention than others. I hate the fact that there are so many children like Sheila out there who are blamed for the world's problems because they are slightly different to normal people. At the end of the book, Torey tells of how she will go into a teaching job at a ...
...certification to teach "disturbed" children and that she would not want to be caught out by the officials because of not having the correct certification. She also says that she has been thinking about going into a job in psychiatry. I know that she went ahead with that decision because she has also written another book called "Twilight Children" in which she describes the troubles of three individuals, each plagued by some problem. I have not read ...

Ghost Girl

Advantages: great read
Disadvantages: disturbing abuse to a young child

...A 'mute' dose not make one noise at all. Not only is Jadie a 'mute' child, she also walks with a very visable hunched back. She almost doubles herself over, into herself and does not move out of that position. Although she did not speak, Jadie mostly sat at her desk and done her work, at probably a better level than the rest of the kids in her class. She was always willing to do her work and wouldnt join in with playtime unless it had been completed. ...
...bit of tape, so no one could see in. Thats when she felt it was safe she could talk. Just her and Torey. The cloakroom became a regular thing, which Torey didnt mind, Jadie had even started taking part more in class and even speaking the odd time to the other children. Even at one point, Jadie and another boy from her class stole a puppy from one of the school's neighbours. They had brought it away to hide it and keep it safe, though Torey had found ...

...as a teacher. this particular one is about an 8 yr old girl calle Jadie, she doesnt speak to anyone at school, a selective mute i think she called it. and she is constantly hunched over. there is nothing physically wrong with her to make her do this, so the medical experts are at a loss as to what the problem is. anyway Torey takes on a new job as the special need teacher at a school when the exsisting teacher commits suicide. to start with Jadie ...

One Child

Advantages: heartwrenching,eye opener,offers hope.
Disadvantages: the suffering shelia has been through.

'One Child' was the first book that I've ever read which was written by Torey Hayden. I bought it in WHSmiths a few years ago at the full price costing me £5.99 (paperback),you can get it cheaper if you shop around. The book is based on Torey's experience as a special needs teacher and psychologist in America although she now currently writes in the U.K, understandably she has had to change the names of the characters as the book is a true story. ...
...has had a horrific time, she has been abused and abandoned, now she's come into Torey's life. Torey Hayden battles to unlock the awful truths and emotions that's hidden in Sheila. Shelia is a very traumatised little girl who cannot speak and will not cry,She was placed into Toreys class after she done something awful to another child. This is a sad but fantastic story of their journey together,it offers courage, hope and devotion. I truly recommend ...

One Child - one book you should definitely read

Advantages: you won't want to put it down
Disadvantages: you won't get anything done because you are so engrossed in the book!!!

One child depicts the tragic childhood that six year old Sheila experienced. Abandoned by her mother on a motorway, brought up by her drug addict and alcoholic father and horifically subjected to sexual abuse by her uncle. It was almost inevitable that she would display some disturbing behaviour. At the age of six she kidnapped and set fire to a three year old. It was because of this act that she was placed in a special class for children with severe ...
...the class teacher, author Torey Hayden battles to try and slavage some of Sheila's childhood and prevent her from being condemed to a life in a state hospital. It is a truely compelling read and will make the most unemotional person shed a tear. I would recommend this book to any early years practitioners as well as anyone who has an interest in diffiuclt children, displaying behavioural problems, as this book will give them hope.
