Advantages Advantages Fast paced and exciting

Disadvantages Disadvantages No time for character development

One Rainy Night is fast paced, non stop action all the way. It's the story of a night when rain falls, turning everyone it touches into a crazed killer! The entire novel covers a period of just a few hours - there's no gentle introduction or setting of scene, the violent action is relentless. Just as with Flesh, I've always thought One Rainy Night would make an excellent movie: it has all the action, shocks and violence that a good horror film needs. But as a novel it has some of the same drawbacks as Flesh too: there's no time for subtlety or well defined characters here. But that's not a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Exciting

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing special

One Raniy Night is an average Richard Laymon horror book. The story is about “black rain” that falls on a town and makes everyone it touches evil. The book is well written but it lacks whatever it is in other Richard Laymon books which makes them so exceptional. The full potential of the storyline was not reached but overall it was still a very entertaining book. I would recommend it to any Laymon fans but if you are looking to read Richard Laymon books for the first time you would be better to go for one of his others (preferably a more recent one) such as Island, Body Rides or Quake before ... more

4 Stars The Black Rain 12/04/2007

Advantages Advantages It's scary, and it has the usual quality of writing by Laymon

Disadvantages Disadvantages It can seem a little cheesey in places.

One Rainy Night by Richard Laymon is set in a small American town called Bixby. Everything is pretty much quiet until the night before it starts raining. A black teenager was murdered by his classmates for his association with an ex - girlfriend of their leader, Buddy. When the rain starts everything changes. The rain is black and when it touches people they turn into psychopathic maniacs, bent on destruction. The book follows the stories of several main charactors. One of the first we are introduced to are mother and daughter Maureen and Lisa. Lisa was the girlfriend of the black boy who was ... more

Advantages Advantages Good lighthearted horror a must for those who enjoy being scared

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for the squemish or faint of heart very explicit and graphic detail

If you are already familiar with Richard Layman there’s no need to tell you that his work is brimming with blood, gore and graphically violent sexual themes and One Rainy Night is no exception. A huge fan of Laymon novels I personally own over 30 titles and this is defiantly one of my favourites,in fact I've read my copy so many times the pages are starting to fall out. From chapter one you are drawn into a story about a peculiar black rain that turns all who are coated in it into bloodlust filled crazies. Because of the large character base of the book it is slightly lacking in the depth ... more

5 Stars Quick review of One Rainy Night - Richard Laymon by ang2911 09/09/2008
Another fantastic read by the late, great Richard Laymon. Typically dark, intelligent, gripping and gore-filled. A great night-time read!

Advantages Advantages Good characters and base plot

Disadvantages Disadvantages The end feels a bit sudden and rushed

I started reading Richard Laymon books pretty much by accident - I'd read all the Stephen King books and needed something else to get my teeth into and have been working my way through his books ever since. I picked up One Rainy Night a couple of days ago and just finished reading it. It starts off as promising as any Richard Laymon book with his charactarisation which really makes you feel like you're getting to know the characters as people and then launches into the story line with blood and guts spilling at full speed. By the end of the book though you feel almost like he's got bored ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent book - as are all by this author

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Excellent book of decent length in comaprision to some by Richard Laymon. I love all of his books in this one a horrible black pain falls on a community and infects all it touches with a need to kill. You follow the characters through this terrible one night which lasts the whole story. you are really able to empithise with some of the characters and the story gets you that involved you may even start to believe its true. Richard Laymon books are gripping and youre hardly able to put them down. I have read almost every story published and if you would like any reviews on any others please ask ... more
