Advantages Advantages Exciting knowing you are personally helping a child.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

Act on this Operation now! Make this act one of your favourite Christmas traditions too. Get your shoes out, wear them, then think about what you'd like to fill the box with. How many little exciting presents can you fit into one simple shoe box? Like the sound of this simple challenge? Then read on... Many children across the world are crying out for simple pleasures. Pause for a moment from spoiling your own children and find the time to think about others more needy than your own. I, like so many other parents from our society want to get new and exciting gifts for my children and am often ... more

Advantages Advantages Bring joy to suffering children

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some funds are used for other projects

With Christmas coming again, we are all thinking of saving money to buy presents for the ones we love. What will it be this year? A couple of hundred pounds on the latest Bratz house for little Emily and an expensive train set for Daniel. All seems a bit over the top but its all worth it to see the look on their little faces as the wrapping paper is excitedly ripped off those carefully wrapped gifts. Now imagine a very different Christmas. You are a Romanian mother of five or six children, your husband was killed and so there is very little food to go around, let alone money. You are aware of ... more

Advantages Advantages To put a smile on a child's face at Christmas

Disadvantages Disadvantages the religion behind it.

Imagine waking up on the 25th Christmas and thinking oh not another boring day, your children know it is Christmas Day but this year there is no Christmas Tree at the window, there are no presents nicely wrapped under the tree. All you have is the knowledge that some one some where in the world is having a wonderful time but you are not. This is project that was started up by the infamous evangelical family of the Grahams in the USA to put a smile on Childrens faces around the world who have been victims of war, poverty, famine and natural disasters. So fine, I am not particularly religious ... more

Just a quick nag. If you do one thing for me this year, make it this thing. Ignore all the book-purchase commands, the website visit nags, even eat ready meals and don't cook your own. But do this thing for me, eh? If you make a purchasing decision from anything I've ever written, make it from this thing. Pack a shoebox. A shoebox? Yes, a shoebox. Not any old shoebox, but a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. It's a charity thang, and a super one, run by the charity Samaritan's Purse. We've filled our shoeboxes for the last few years, and this year we Murphys thought we'd ask you to fill ... more

I imagine that many Ciao members have already been getting organised for christmas . Perhaps you've been paying a few pounds a week towards a big hamper of goodies, perhaps you've got one or two christmas presents already stashed away in the attic . Those of you with children will perhaps already be dreading the new, noisy, messy toys that will be given to your child by indulgent grandparents and proceed to drive you mad until the batteries run out . Now, imagine your child waking up on Christmas morning, and not seeing a tree, decorations or a pile of gifts . Imagine them looking out of the ... more

For those of you who don't already know, Operation Christmas Child is a project set up by the Samaritan's Purse. They deliver gifts to children abroad who have suffered because of war, natural disaster, poverty, illness or neglect. A number of organisations, schools and churches participate in this project each year. Every year, around October time, the people involved in this project send out leaflets to those who have participated before. The leaflets are self explanatory and can be ordered online at http://www.samaritanspurse.org. For those of you who have not seen or heard of this project ... more

Advantages Advantages make a childs day

Disadvantages Disadvantages none what so ever

For us Christmas comes around once a year and goes away, each year we get gifts from our loved ones that we probably take for granted. there are hundreds of thousands of children out in the third world countries that don’t get this joyful day we do, they don’t get the fun of wakening up of Christmas morning to a stocking full of little gifts at the end of there bed, they don’t have a tree and a house full of decorations and coloured lights as most of us do. So I find it important to take some time each year to take part in Operation Christmas Child to make a difference to a Childs day ... more

Please consider carefully whether you wish to support this charity. It may seem inocent and harmless but the American charity behind it, Samaritan's Purse, have very dubious motivation and give evangelical literature with the christmas presents. The charity's leader is Franklin Graham - who calls Islam "a very wicked and evil religion" Read this link from the Reverend Dr Giles Fraser before you proceed. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/nov/10/religion.society

Advantages Advantages Children will get a gift

Disadvantages Disadvantages It is an evangelical christian organisation giving it

Operation Christmas Child is a front for Samaritan's Purse which is headed by Franklin Graham the American preacher who declared Islam 'a very evil and wicked religion'. He also said recently that the Koran teaches 'violence, not peace'. Samaritan's Purse stated aim is to convert people to christianity, and they do not hide that their use of giving aid or gifts is part of a tactic of actions and words - i.e. buying a conversion from vulnerable people. It is difficult to argue against Operation Christmas Child because you will be accused of denying children something to brighten their lives ... more

Advantages Advantages Gives a feel-good factor, if you don't ask too many questions

Disadvantages Disadvantages Decptive about true aims/intent of the scheme

Operation Christmas Child is set up and run by the evangelical, prosletysing organisation The Samaritan's Purse. Their stated purpose is to make converts, and the shoeboxes which are filled are described by those who distribute them to some of the most disadvantaged children in the world as 'a gift from Jesus'. As many of the boxes have been collected and filled by Muslim children in the UK, and are distributed in Muslim countries this has, understandably caused offence to some. The addition of evangelical missionar materials to the boxes after collection was not made specific in literature ... more
