Advantages Advantages Realistic, soldier-istic, and almost fantastic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Frustrating, high system specs and lacks oomph

In an ideal world there would be no wars. But then, in such a peaceful society, what sort of PC games would we play? Because although there are hundreds of sports and suchlike presented in the medium of computer games, the most popular subject by far is war. What is it about killing that keeps the punters coming back for more? There is nothing that the average teenage boy enjoys more (except perhaps the obvious) than a violent, bloody, state-of-the-art first-person shooter. The games producers and publishers have of course latched on to this and we (the PC gamers) are inundated with new ... more

Advantages Advantages Very atmospheric and realistic. Great graphics, sound and computer AI. Groundbreaking. Includes free editor. Great multi-player. FUN!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Will need a decent computer to run (see op). There are a few minor bugs. Campaign interface could be a little more polished.

Earlier today I was crouched in a hedge on the side of a hill. It was raining and there was the occasional sound of thunder coming from the grey sky. Keeping me company in the hedge was a dead fellow soldier who had misplaced his face a few metres behind him. I had only a couple of bullets left in my gun and there were enemy soldiers running around looking for me. Most of me knew it was only a game but this particular game is so good that the other part of me was absolutely absorbed… and I was a bit scared. Operation Flashpoint is a complete simulation of war – from the officers ... more

    Advantages Advantages Realistic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Realism denies the graphics somewhat

The first thing that attracted me to Operation Flashpoint, was the alleged sheer realism of the game. I'm not one for wanton violence, but I do like to watch documentaries on war. So naturally, I got this game. Was I disappointed? In a word no. When you first start playing the game, the main menu screen pops up. There is a video of 'in game' footage running in the background and you are presented with: Single player; Campaign; Mission editor and multiplayer. The Single player missions are separate from each other, yet there is a story running through them. It is a little confusing though, in ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent game with great graphics and sound

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I can safely say that this is the most addictive and also frustrating game that I have ever played. This game takes the role of a 1st person (or 3rd person) shooter. This game contains a mixture of both Project IGI and Rogue Spear, IGI for the stealth and Rogue Spear for the killing. But this game contains a new feature, this is that when on the battle field you may commandeer vehicles, these range from cars and trucks to tanks and choppers, you can use the weapons that are present in them. The overall plot of the game is that there is a renegade Russian general, who is fed up with NATO ... more

Advantages Advantages Brilliant blend of genres, realism, good multiplayer

Disadvantages Disadvantages graphics lacking in areas

Operation Flashpoint. This is a game that managed to revolutionise the entire PC shooting-sim market, and certainly for the better. Technically it’s third person too, but that’s the thing – Operation Flashpoint is the perfect marriage of multiple game genres. Want to fly a helicopter? You can. Maybe a plane? No problem. Or you could always just cruise around on one of the many ground vehicles, ranging from tanks to tractors. Operation Flashpoint marks possibly the only success gamers have ever seen in this area. Its sheer ambition to merge so many different elements is passed off almost ... more

Advantages Advantages Tough, gritty, realistic, vast.

Disadvantages Disadvantages No Information Minister! Can be slow, need a decent PC to run it.

Listen up men (and women)! If it's war you're after, but don't fancy signing up or hitchhiking to Iraq, then you need Flashpoint. As far as games go, it's up there with the best I've played. Everything about this game impressed me. The packaging (I bought the Gold Edition after hearing so much about the game but never bothering to buy it upon original release) was an eye-catching gold, and the screenshots looked like a live feed off CNN. Installation was accompanied by rousing music and speech which captured the Cold War period the game is set in perfectly. I felt like I was watching an old ... more

Advantages Advantages Superb graphics, and technical realism

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for fans of shoot-em-ups

In its relatively short history, the soldier sim has so far done little more then cater to the same fleeting adolescent fantasies of military life that purred so many of us to seek public humiliation in the nation's newsies. Of course, they were more lifelike than the Quakes and Half-Life's that so many people tend to reach out and grab nowadays. But were the super troopers of Soldier Of Fortune and the Delta Forces really 'real'? Them boys at Bohemia Interactive clearly felt that they weren't up to scratch, and Operation Flashpoint is their riposte - a hugely ambitious, addictive, and, for ... more

    Advantages Advantages Detailed, Realistic,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit slow because I need a new Graphics Card

I bought Operation Flashpoint in PC World on Friday 23rd June. This was the day of release, and I had been waiting for it for weeks! Thankfully it didn?t disappoint me. The first good thing when buying the game was I got a game for free with it ? 1NSANE ? although overall compared to Electronics Boutique it cost me £5 more (£35 in PC World, £30 in Electronics Boutique). It didn?t matter to me because I was getting Operation Flashpoint! If you have any interest in either first-person-shooter games, or even just strategy games, maybe even war. Then you are likely to love this game. I personally ... more

    Advantages Advantages Sound, Gameplay

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficulty

This game is the ultimate tactical war game simulator. It's so close to real life warfare that it's scary! It reminds me of Saving Private Ryan, which showed how easily you can die, no respawn in this game. Thankfully in Operation Flashpoint you can employ tactics that reduce the ease and randomness of death. This game lets you control a single soldier, a whole troop, tank platoons and helicopter gunships in the same game, you can even do it in the same mission. I believe out of all the components of Operation Flashpoint, the gameplay is the best. It is a mixture of the open-ended and non ... more

    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Atmosphere and realism at its best.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Good graphics card needed

Hit the deck is something you may possibly do when you play this game because it really is in every way, shape and form brilliant. Graphics, AI (Artificial Intelligence), sound effects and the mission structures are all very impressive. Everything about Operation Flashpoint : cold war crisis signals quality and you would have serious difficulties finding any real flaws with it (apart from the unbelievably long title). The game itself would be best described as a simulation of war. It is set in the year of 1985 in a period of cold war. Its you against the Russians as they attempt to invade a ... more
