A bookworms best friend

AdvantagesFriendly staff, huge array of books

DisadvantagesCannot order over the website

"Ottakar’s - A bookworm's best friend Back in the heady days of 2000, I fell in love. What’s this got to do with a bookstore? Well, keep with me and I’ll explain. Back in 2000 I moved in with Mel, who had lived in Chelmsford all of her life. I’d been brought up in Welling, Kent, a small town on the border of Kent and London, a twenty minute drive from the newly opened Bluewater shopping complex, and about half an hour from the slightly older Lakeside ..." My one true love

AdvantagesThe range of books

DisadvantagesCosta Coffee Shop is expensive

"The nearest Ottaker's book store to me is in Lowestoft, but, as I visit Norwich more often than I do Lowestoft, I'm going to tell you about the Norwich branch. The store itself holds more than 500,000 books, and stands in 15,000 sq ft of ground. Quite amazing, eh?! Situated in the heart of the city, it's one of my all time favourite book shops, and very nearly every time I'm in Norwich I visit this store. The store is exceptionally clean and ..." Read review

The Bookshop from the Punk Age

AdvantagesVery nice ambience and atmosphere, excellent layout and features

DisadvantagesVery pricey books

"I’ve recently developed quite a taste for reading books. As one of my New Year’s Resolutions, I made sure that I took more time to relax and to enjoy life, rather than just rushing through and organising everything for everyone else. My new-found love of all things written has lead me to question certain book-stores, both on and off-line. One in particular is Ottakar’s, where, in my hometown of Gloucester, the store has recently ..." Read review

Smells like new books.

Advantagesyou can always get a bestseller here

Disadvantagesbut you can lay money they won't have anything on dark age pottery.

"...(especially on Terry Prachett novels) Ottakers are great. They do plenty of mainstream popular books pound classics and all that sort of thing. They tend to have a good children's section. They do not stock much that is obscure, esoteric or weird (but the odds are good that they can order it in for you if you ask.)They do frequently have very good offers, and that has always endeared them to me. if you want to buy a recent fiction release, ottakers ..." Ottakars - Bookshop Extrordinaire

AdvantagesVast selection of books from all genres

DisadvantagesCan be pricey, no student discount (although varied promotional offers can make amends for this!)

"James Heneage deserves a medal. The man is clearly a genius. To invisage creating the bookshop we've all always dreamed of... welcoming, atmospheric, a collection of books so vast that the only problem you'll will have on entering the store is deciding where to begin. And of course once we have made that decision there are plenty of eager, helpful, polite and genuinely pleasant staff on hand to guide us to the relevant section, shelf, and very ..." Read review

Great Lincoln Store.

AdvantagesVery welcoming shop.

DisadvantagesNone.

"We love going to book shops and this store is a real gem. This is the first Ottakars book store that I have been to and I was very impressed. The Lincoln store has three storeys and the whole store is very well laid out, with plenty of room to browse around. The whole shop has a very welcoming feeling about it with chairs and sofas all around the shop where you can sit and relax to look through some of the wonderful collection of books in ..." bookworm heaven

Advantagesnice ambience, central location, staff who are interested!

Disadvantagesmore expensive than online books, weak crime section

"...that in terms of price Ottakers cannot hope to compete with internet giants like Amazon and BOL, but I will continue to support our high street bookshops - city centres would be a much poorer place without them. ..." Read review

Relax, Read and Oh look at the time

AdvantagesWide range, can order pretty much anything

DisadvantagesMore chairs needed

"...but to be honest, the Ottakers in Lincoln (I can't say about anywhere else with conviction!) is just about the best place to do with books I have been to. Three floors of wonderful things. The brilliant idea of having the children's section downstairs so that the little loves aren't running around your legs as you wander up and down the aisles discovering new things. Th even better idea of installing a Costa Coffee and a cafe and even soafs around ..." Read review

wish I'd found it sooner

Advantagesgreat selection

Disadvantagestoo many titles to choose from!

"...the pleasure of visiting an Ottakers store as the one in Norwich has not been open too long. But what a great place! Everything is laid out really clearly and there is plenty of space between shelves for browsing. Well positioned signs point you in the right direction if you're feeling a bit lost. One thing I particularly like is the sofas dotted around the store so you can sit and relax while perusing your selection. The hand written signs on ..." Read review

A Really Pleasant Shopping Experience

AdvantagesWell layed out, great selection of books, helpful staff.

DisadvantagesExpensive compared to online retailers.

"I went into Ottakers for the first time, just before Christmas. The branch only opened in my home-town a few months previously. Before then, I had never heard of them. I went in the because I wanted to buy some childrens books for my niece and nephew for Christmas. I didn't want to go in WHSmiths because I know they are expensive and I didn't have the time to buy online as it was too close to Christmas. As soon as I stepped in the door, I could ..." Read review

Relaxing and Pleasant

AdvantagesRelaxing & Pleasant

DisadvantagesYou can get carried away

"I went to Ottakers today to buy a few books for work in my lunch hour. I usually end up rushing around the town centre and generally getting stressed but today I needed to get a few books. I went straight to Ottakers and found the relevant section The IT section that was very east to find, as the whole shop is well signposted so everything is easy to find. My biggest problem was deciding which books to buy as they had a surprisingly large collection ..." Read review

Good read

AdvantagesUnhurried, leisurely inspection of books

DisadvantagesAre there any? Except that you feel you have to buy a coffee at Costa's?!

"I always feel unhurried in Ottaker's Book Stores! I have only the one in Douglas, Isle of Man to go on, but it is a friendly place!! Book signings happen on a regular basis, and it much cost a lot to transport an author to the Isle of Man for a book signing!! I like the way that there are tables in the Costa's Coffee shop upstairs that you can take books to and read while you are enjoying the coffee/biscotti! You don't have to buy the book afterwards!! There ..." Read review

Books over there, books over here.

AdvantagesA quiet haven on a busy high street. Its a bookshop.

DisadvantagesDon't always have what I want in stock. Not the cheapest books.

"Ottakar's began in 1987 when its current Managing Director, James Heneage, realised that there might be an opportunity to establish a chain of bookshops offering high levels of range and service across the market towns of England. A big fan of Hergé's Tintin books, the name Ottakar's came from the book James was reading at the time - King Ottokar's Sceptre. Ottakar's is a haven, a sanctuary from the noise and bustle of the high street. When it ..." Read review

I could live in this shop

Advantagesstaff, atmosphere, displays, the sales! recomended titles,

Disadvantagesnone

"Ottakers could be my second home. I make sure that wherever I work, I know where the branch is and visit it at lunchtime-not every lunchtime but at least once a week, because I know they will have changed the displays. This last few weeks there have been the sales and I have spent less money than you'd think, buying some really good books. By the end of the sales theyreduce their books by 75%!!!!!!!!! Other bookshops put their naff books in the sales ..." Read review
