Advantages Advantages In depth high quality reviews

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you're novice you'll struggle

I worked on PC Magazine for four years up to 1996. It was a remarkable magazine to work on because of the large editorial budget--30 staff--which really marked it as being different from the other magazines around at the time. The magazine is aimed at those who need excellent high quality information about the IT products and services they are going to buy. The centrepiece of the approach was to develop extensive comparative reviews that looked at a whole sector of a market and reported on which products were best. The work behind this was tedious. We often had tables of features with 300 or ... more

Advantages Advantages Good Read, cover CDs

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

PC Magazine is a good all round IT magazine without the usual 1000 pages of adverts contained in other PC magazines. This features a CD-ROM with lots of trial software. For example this month (March 2001) contains trials of Hotmetal Pro 6.0 as well as lots of other useful windows add ons. This magazine has the usual readers letters section covering all aspects of IT with informative feedback from the editor. This magazine features highly on networking and contains very informative articles on networking and the Internet. A particular good feature this month was on E-Commerce in which it ... more

    5 Stars PC Magazine 08/08/2000

Advantages Advantages Clear and very informative, with very reliable reviews that aren't for complete professionals only. Not full of adverts

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for a beginner to start from, and perhaps more articles and columns needed

This is a very informative magazine, which leaves out the humungous amounts of adverts seen in rival magazines. Now this is probably not a magazine for the complete beginner, but if you are familiar with computers for some time, or work in the industry, then this is the one for you. The opinions in the magazine are well backed up by rigorous tests and they are very very reliable. The news sections also keep you upto date with what affects the everyday PC user while the other sections offer regular tips and tricks. The only thing that I would say is bad about it is that there isn't enough of ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty to read, often a free CD of software to try or shareware.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too many adverts, and it is written for the knowledgeable reader.

PC Magazine is a great magazine to read. It does however have too many adverts in my opinion. These adverts are also for very expensive equipment, way out of my price range. This does put me off slightly. The magazine is full of things to read, and the quality of the journalism is very good. The articles are sometimes a bit too long and so this can be a bit off putting. There is often a free CD to accompany the magazine, on which I have found some great software. The articles are sometimes too complicated and you must be very knowledgeable in computers to understand it, which can make it ... more

    Advantages Advantages loads of reviews

    Disadvantages Disadvantages quite expensive

P C Magazine is a cheap(ish) computer magazine that does exactly what it says. It gives you all sort of news, advice and stories about buying a computer or laptop. Depending on what type of disc you get dictates what price you pay for the magazine. If you have a normal c.d. rom, it costs £4.99. If you have a DVD, it costs £5.99. On the cover disk, there are usually two or three full programs and a few demos. The full programs are usually Internet tools, or music or picture editors etc. The demos are usually anti- virus utilities, trailers or if you have the DVD, games. Inside the magazine there ... more

Having been in IT Support for many years, I have lost count of the number of monthly Computer magazines I have bought some of which seem to be more than half full of adverts rather than actual news and reviews. So it was so refreshing to find that "PC Magazine" do a subscribers edition which is vertually advert free. O what a breath of fresh air and so much easier to read what I buy the magazine for. The Subscribers Edition still has the free CD or DVD disk and the same high quality of reviews and tests. Without the advertisments it also takes up less space if like me you keep the magazines as ... more
