Advantages Advantages Mainly local, quick and often empty

Disadvantages Disadvantages staff with little knowledge, all to ready to pass you to someone else

From previous articles I have written you will probably find that I was a salesman for an opposing company, Staples UK. I'm probably also quite biased because of opinions and motivations of the staff at my store, but I'll try to give you solid facts. PC World offers a nice range of gadgets, software and computer hardware. They offer services and advice. I do shop in PC world, but I do so only when it is the nearest or most convienent. I also consider myself well versed in computers and a geek. I also emensly enjoy frustrating staff with questions - and why not? That's what they are there for ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick if you don't mind being ripped off and lied to

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lying and inept salespeople, inflated prices, dodgy service

***Original review is at the bottom*** I originally slated PC World in my first review of them, but following the need for a new laptop I decided to see what they had on offer. Has Ayan lost his mind? Has all his technical savvy been abducted by aliens? Is he succumbing to the bright lights and glossy fascias of hghstreet stores? Well the answer to all three of the above is a firm NO, but at the end of the day it came down to basic economics. What I use a latop for is mainly surfing the net while I'm out and about, checking e-mail and occasionally just breaking the boredom if travelling. In ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy ordering, dedicated Account Manager

Disadvantages Disadvantages Recent delays on items that show as being in stock

This is a review on PC World Business rather than the ordinary PC World Store. Unfortunately, as there isn't a category for PC World Business (as I will refer to as PCWB) so I've had to put the review here. I first encountered PC World Business when I started my current job over 3 years ago. One of my main tasks at the point was to re-order stock. As we are a Software Development company, we were constantly ordering PC supplies and development tools. PCWB had been the main supplier for some time. PCWB are a main supplier of Computer equipment, Software, Hardware and items such as Office ... more

Advantages Advantages Large range of PC's

Disadvantages Disadvantages Staff know nothing about them

We bought our first system from PC World, as newbies we thought we were getting good advice and good service... until we came to upgrade that is. If you're a newcomer to PC's then you don't always know the right questions to ask, but we geared ourselves with a few that we thought would keep us right. However PC World have trained their staff well, trained them in the black art of misinformation. I'm not saying they lie to you, no, they just neglect to tell you the important things. In spring 1998 we bought a Packard Bell system based around a Celeron 333, armed with limited knowledge we asked ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good selction

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very poor pricing system

There is one reason that I am so willing to write an opinion on this so called ‘World of PC’s’ PC WORLD. That reason being, to warn any potential customers that it’s not a very good place to shop. SO WHAT ARE IT’S PRICES LIKE? Prices of the products has been very high, and has been for the past few years; a little disappointing. For example in the games section of the store, (Where I am if I ever have to go in there) is overly priced. Pc games which usually cost around £29.99 at day of release will always set you back around £34.99, a fiver more for the same thing ... more

    Advantages Advantages lots of shops

    Disadvantages Disadvantages after sales

Take this as a warning, PC Worlds after sales care in my experience, is poor in the extreme. My computer a Hewlett Packard, brought new in June 2000. Unfortunatley come 8 months later the hard drive starts making funny sounds. Ok, things go wrong. So i sort out the reciept and off to the shop i go, base unit under arm. Hello nice service centre person explain problem, kept waiting while they disappear into another room for 15 minutes. On re apperance sorry, you need to phone technical and they will send someone out to you. Ok, back home with unit still under arm. Thinking to myself thats good ... more

Advantages Advantages everything under one roof

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you can find someone to help you

PC world is a surprise. 8 years ago I wondered to my self how a superstore, dedicated to only computers could survive in the industrial state battleground on the outskirts of town, apparently competing with the likes of Tescos, Asda, Comet, Curries, etc. The battle however has seen more specialised superstores take arms in the struggle to wrest cash from us, Joe Public. Mothercare, Toys R us, Momas and Poppas, and Pets mart.all have found the cheaper rates of industrial estate Britain profitable. 8 years on and PC World is going strong. PC World sells hardware and software, targeting the novice ... more

Advantages Advantages being a "PCWorld" Business user

Disadvantages Disadvantages being a home user

I was a home PC user before returning to work after my child had started school. Having 3 children and not a lot of spare cash I wanted the best I could for my money. With husband in tow I visited our local PC World store. Having only ever gazed through the windows before we were completely horrified at all the computer equipment on show. Being complete novices we made our way to the nearest sales assistant. A young chap, nicely turned out and very polite. We explained that we wished to purchase our first computer and asked for advice. That was our first mistake! Megabytes, gigabytes and all ... more

Advantages Advantages loads of various stock

Disadvantages Disadvantages very unhelpful staff that dont know what they're doing

UPDATE first: I thought this was funny! You may do too! Paul went into PC World last night to go and get some software for his computer. He asked the only available member of staff a question about the software and surprise surprise, he didn't know! So he asked the security guard and the security guard knew more about the software and computers than the member of staff! Maybe they should switch jobs!!!! hehehehehehe!!!!! Thinking of going to PC World then? Well the only advantage to going is that they sell a wide range of products but if it’s help or advice you need then forget it. Yes ... more

Advantages Advantages Good range and not bad prices for a high street shop

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sales staff will always try and sell you something bigger

I never usually went for 'computer shops' before. It's not that the prices are too much higher than buying from a mail order catalogue, although this is often the case, but that the salespeople often treat you as some sort of cattle, waiting to be prodded in the right direction. However, on this occassion PC World were advertising on television and had one of their many infamous sales, where supposedly everything had been knocked down so low in price that you could probably have got away with buying 10 computers and still have change left from a 100 pound. If only this were so! The first thing ... more
