Advantages Advantages The gift of unaided vision; cheaper than a lifetime of glasses or contact lenses

Disadvantages Disadvantages Perfect results not 100% guaranteed

Six years ago my life was changed by PRK treatment for my short sight. Anyone considering this treatment will be well aware of the magnitude of their decision, so I hope it will be useful to read an impartial opinion by somebody who underwent the surgery. I have dug out my old paperwork relating to the surgery in order to make the occasional reference to the sciencey stuff, although my opinion is intended primarily as a real-life snapshot of the experience from a layman's perspective. In the mid-nineties, laser eye surgery started to hit the headlines as it became widely available in Britain ... more

Advantages Advantages Being free from Contact Lenses and Glasses

Disadvantages Disadvantages Minor discomfort for a few days

PRK – Photo Refractive Keratectomy. Sounds technical – that’s because it is! However, all you and I need to know is that the procedure can correct myopia (short sightedness) and astigmatism (the eye not focusing evenly). I received this treatment on both eyes, at 6 month intervals, back in 1997. And if you excuse the pun – I’ve never looked back! Before I go into the “ins and outs” of this incredible procedure let me give you some Company information should you wish to contact them for information/appointments. *** Optimax Laser Eye Clinics *** 08705 143314 for Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool ... more

Advantages Advantages The miracle of vision

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost and a few pre surgery worries

Everyone seems to have an opinion on laser eye surgery so do I, IT'S FANTASTIC !! I had the procedure done in May 2002 and have had exceptional vision since. I had worn glasses since I was 10 the old 'can't see the blackboard' line turned into the 'I can't see without the specs' line. Pink national health glasses were bad not to mention embarrassing and I hated wearing them it was worse at high school when even the slightest imperfection makes you feel like a freak. Luckily by then the styles of glasses were not too bad so I could cope with wearing them for seeing the blackboard. Gradually my ... more

Advantages Advantages Burning those milk bottled bottomed glasses you've been wearing for years

Disadvantages Disadvantages Most companies make you sign a huge disclaimer thus protecting their fundiments.

I have recently been on a consultation to have Laser Eye surgery and have found the whole process to be a bit of an eye opener (No pun intended). I am very badly short sighted and continue to be browned off with plonking little blobs of plastic in my eyes, however vanity prevents me from wearing glasses full time. I was always aware of Lasik treatment but had never taken it seriously until recently. In recent years the Americans and we have taken to this treatment, Tiger Woods and Richard Branson (In Harley Street) have had the treatment and don't the consultants make a point of mentioning ... more

Advantages Advantages no more glasses, great vision

    Disadvantages Disadvantages may not last

I first became aware of laser surgery to correct short sight some years ago. My Aunt, Uncle and cousin all travelled to Cyprus for a fortnight and had treatment on the Russian hospital ship which was docked there at a cost of around £2000 each (including the fortnight in Cyprus). ~~~~ Pre-Treatment ~~~~ I was interested in the procedure but the price was way out of my league. A couple of years later I heard of a place called Optimax in London. They did PRK laser treatment for only £400 per eye (they can keep the cost down by doing lots of treatments). I sent off for information and received a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Better Vision

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit uncomfortable

I had PRK on Friday, July 29th and today is Tuesday, August 9th, and used a lot of people’s first-hand experiences in preparing for the surgery. So I wanted to share with anyone who many be thinking about it. Please feel free to ask me anything and everything else! I am more than happy to help! The surgery itself is fine. They give you valium and the doctors at Eye Doctors of Washington are super nice. Your eyes are numb and you do not feel a thing other than some of the drops burning a bit and, at one point, they saturate your eye with cold water and tell you to expect a cold headache - that ... more
