Advantages: Efficient, good price, nice design, reliable, easy to use Disadvantages: Not enough memory, screen is a bit small, difficult to read in some lighting conditions,
I bought a M100 in September 2000. It's the first PDA I've used, so although I had expectations about it, I've since learned a lot about the good and bad aspects of this device. At first I thought it was absolutely great, and couldn't be faulted, I discovered a number of unexpected benefits, but now I can see a few minor disadvantages too...
First the expected benefits. Its built in organiser, address book, calculator, notepad and little sketch ... ...loves the sketchpad). Its replaced all the functions of my paper organiser, and its only 1/3 the size and weight. At £130 (but shop around, there are bargains down to £100 at least in some places on-line), its cheap enough to be carried around without worry. I had just attended a conference on mobile computing, and I was interested in finding out how usable a stylus text input method would be. I find it acceptable and quite easy. Its about as fast ...

...doing an offer on the Palm series, and I decided that I'd take the oppurtunity to get the Palm M100 at half price. My mate had got a Palm device and had used it every available chance so why not me? After all at least I could synchronize my address book and calendar with the PC...
The unit itself is pretty small and lightweight and has a handy flip top cover to stop the monochrome touch screen from getting scratched. I do have one gripe with the ... ...the screen which makes the Palm think it's being used and thus negate the auto-off feature to stop the unit from powering down if not in use. A small niggle though.
As I've mentioned the M100 is touch screen and you use a stylus which fits into the back of the unit to navigate around and enter data. The stylus does feel a little too light, but it is bareable. If your just navigating and not entering data I've found fingers work just as well to push ...

I was given a Palm m100 handheld computer recently and I've seldom put it down since. Not only do I find this device invaluable in my job, keeping me organised, but when it comes to leisure time it pulls it's weight too (connecting to the internet for film reviews/cinema listings and SMS text messaging via infra-red connection to my mobile phone).
Now I know that this machine has been criticised for having a smaller screen than other Palms and for ... ...(much more convenient that the Palm III's cover) but it would have been nice if it clipped into place whether open or closed to prevent it flapping about.
Two AAA batteries are what power this light yet rugged machine and, so far, I have found the battery life to be excellent.
All in all if you're looking for an affordable way of joining the growing army of PDA owners and you're not fussy about all the bells and whistles of more expensive units ...

...but you don't want your Palm mistaken for one. Plus, this PDA is the runt of the family and a little bit flimsy as a result. Keep it away from your five year old nephew!
Unfortunately these things will eat batteries. Pity that you can't get a solar panel that you could attach to your belt and then cable to the PDA.
Also, don't try and store anything that wouldn't fit on a floppy disk. 2Mb is your limit on this baby. You can't add to it either. ...

...the power of its bigger Palm cousins (for example, the m100 only has 2MB of on-board memory, as opposed to the 8MB which is standard on the higher models) but for casual users, it's perfectly capable of doing everything you could possibly need it to; in fact, once you've gotten used to it, you'll wonder how you ever did without it!

With the introduction of the Palm m105 - with 8Mb instead of 2Mb in the m100, I recommend the newer model, although if you can pick up the m100 for a song - go for it!
Do you really need a PDA when you already have a PAD? The recent introduction on the Palm m100 will have a lot of people wondering if now is the time to ditch the old diary and switch to a handheld. You cant properly upgrade the OS, as in it doesnt have the Flash ROM being introduced in most Palms with which you can almost overwrite the old OS with the new. One of the best things in my opinion about Palm OS in general is Grafitti. This is a way that you write on the pda as a method of data input. You learn it's writing instead of it learning yours. This sounds daunting at first but I cannot stress enough how quickly I picked it up, as would anyone. It really is that good. Once youve learned to basically write in block capitals ...

Advantages: Smaller....? Disadvantages: Costs more, same facilities and provides less screen space the earlier palms...
Having owned a 3com Palm 111 for nearly two years now, i must admit that the Palm M100 was, to me, a slight disapointment.
Firstly, the screen is a lot smaller, which some less picky people may consider not important, yet when doing work- especially involving pictures or games- this space is very important. Also, this lack of space diminishes to a certain degree the ease at which one can write in the 'graffiti', perhaps this is just because of my ...

I already own a Palm V personally and had the opportunity to test drive the m100 at work.
This is a neat Palm. Slightly smaller screen and case than the V and in a plastic rather than metal case. The main differences are:
Battery: m100 does not have a rechargeable one
Connectivity: there is no cradle as standard, but the supplied cable fits easily. Conduits for Outlook etc are supplied. The only whinge is that the m100 won't fit onto the Palm ... ...it!).
Memory: Comes with 2Mb. Not a problem for me (I am used to a Palm V remember).
Applications: all the usual goodies but with a much improved notes program that also lets you draw freehand.
