Disadvantages Disadvantages No hard drive built in so do stock up on recordable DVDs

With technology racing along with the speed of a three legged donkey with piles it won’t be long before the humble ‘VHS Video Cassette recorder’ will become as obsolete as Beta-max, taking its place in the history books. So, with a quick and easy replacement needed, the boffins soon realised that the next stage to recording your favourite programmes, (apart from these really modern ’Hard drive’ systems from sky and the like), is to use a DVD recorder. Anyway, a few years back I decided to join the anti-VCR revolution and went on the hunt for one of those modern, (at the time), DVD recorders ... more

...The Brand... As anyone who knows anything about audio visual products would know, Panasonic are one of the best in the business and they have been hugely prolific over the past ten years winning awards for their televisions, dvd players and home cinema speaker kits. I have a fantastic Panasonic CRT Television which was given five stars by many of the reviews I have read. ...Panasonic DMR ES10... Just one of a number of great DVD Products from Panasonic this DVD Recorder was released at £200 in 2005 and is one of the most awarded recorders from the past few years. It has won awards against ... more

Advantages Advantages Time Slip (DVD-RAM) functions - VERY easy to use

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Erm.... none!

Ok then, so I'm a lucky boy.... On my last birthday my wife decided that she wanted to treat me to a home cinema system so off we went to our local Richer Sounds store (they are VERY cheap and VERY helpful - recommended everyone pays them a visit!) with cash in hand an wangled a deal. I got this Panasonic DVD recorder, A Yamaha surround sound speak package and a Marantz Amp for the princly sum of £350 - a bit of a discount from the £900 RRP! I'll be reviewing each product in turn so check out my other reviews if you want a full system checkup! So into the review of the DVD Recorder: 1) The ... more

Advantages Advantages Useful, Easy to use, Idiot proof (I use it!)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't be cracked for Multi-Region - no Open button on Remote

Last year, in December to be precise, I resolved to purchase yet another piece of technological wizrdry with which I intended to baffle myself - A DVD Recorder! I trundled off to my local branch of Comet, located in Shrewsbury to be exact, and had a meander around the aisles, attempting to look as if I knew what I was looking for. I had noticed an item labelled as if to infer some sort of pecuniary advantage if I were to undertake the purchase of the aforementioned item (I think the exact words were 'special offer'), which in fact was a Panasonic DVD Recorder. As I had long been a fan of ... more

Advantages Advantages Really good picture quality and ease of use

Disadvantages Disadvantages DVD-RAM discs may not play on other DVD players in the home

Earlier this year my old video died. With kids shouting they wanted their films and the only other machine available being a portable dvd player / video combi in my bedroom I decided to put in something more modern. One of the first things that drew me to the Panasonic was my hope of reliability. A couple of times I have bought the cheap and cheerful model only to find that it packs up 2 days after the warranty has expired. I know, I could have just bought a better warranty pack in the past but I hadn't. I read articles in magazines like Which, that helped point me towards the Panasonic, and a ... more

Advantages Advantages Price dropped recently, solid build, good reviews, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Soon to be discontinued?

Having used VHS for years, we decided it is time to get with the times and buy a dvd recorder. Looking at reviews it seems that many machines under £120 are either of dubious build quality and longevity, or exhibit poor visual anomalies in their recordings. The Panasonic DMRES10 has always been reviewed as being a sturdy machine, but overpriced at £200. It has recently fallen to around £120 online. Even the local Panasonic shop has reduced them to £130. In the last week it has also been deleted from the Panasonic online shop, which leads me to think it may be phased out soon? For £120 this is ... more

Advantages Advantages Extremely easy to use, wealth of features

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Clunky remote control

DVD recorders have been notoriously difficult to use due to a baffling array of functions, not to mention the confusion over the different formats of DVD you can record to. Firstly there are several formats of writable DVD's the Panasonic supports, here are the main ones; DVD+R: This type of disc can be recorded onto once only, you cannot rerecord over this type so only buy this kind of disc if you are recording something you won't want to record over later. DVD+RW: This type can be recorded on time and time again and is the type you want to buy ideally as it saves money in the long run. DVD ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent picture and sound quality at the price

Disadvantages Disadvantages Set up can be complex

I was looking for a good quality dvd recorder at a budget price to record purely from my Sky digital box. The recommendation in What Hi Fi steered me to the Panasonic in preference to a similarly priced Sony. (I paid about £150 in January 2006, but now priced at around £120 or less). The set up took me a couple of evenings to fathom out, as I needed to include my Sky digital box in the configuration. As usual it was a combination two problems that was causing the confusion - incorrect Scart lead connections and not setting the Panasonic to "see" my Sky box. Once thsi was sorted, and using ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice looking, easy to use, 1 second record, time slip option, versatile

Disadvantages Disadvantages Menus a bit delayed, slow start up time

This is my first dvd recorder that i have ever purchased. I was unsure between this and a sony one that was in a similar price band at the time. It was the time slip option that won it over for me. Time slip is a feature available on most mid-range dvd recorders. It allows you to record a programme, and watch a different one, or the beginning of the recording one, at the same time. This is very useful especially when programmes start just before you get home and finish late. This however, like all other dvd recorders with time slip, is only available if you use the slightly more expensive dvd ... more

    Advantages Advantages picture quality, versatility

Disadvantages Disadvantages slow read on non-ram discs, doesn't play computer discs

I purchased this recorder so I could move away from bulky vhs tapes. What a good move! It is mainly used for recording films etc from sky+ on to dvd and the picture quality is excellent with no discernible loss even on long play(4 hours per dvd). What surprised me was how well video tapes transferred to disc. Even using ep(8 hours per disc!) there was no difference from the original tape. I now have space on my shelves again! It is a very steep learning curve compared to a video recorder however, and I still haven't begun to understand the more complex aspects such as time-slip etc. I blame ... more
