Advantages: High Quality images;wide range of features Disadvantages: pricey;slow performance
...One thing is for sure, Panasonic hasn’t skimped on the spec for the FZ-50. It packs in a 10.1Mp CCD sensor, moving up from the 8Mp sported by the FZ-30, there is a 12x optical zoom with a 35-420mm range in 35mm terms, and at the wide end lens has a maximum aperture of F/2.8. What’s impressive is that the maximum aperture is fast F/3.7 at the full extension of 420mm.
With a 420mm lens you risk camera shake, however hard you try to combat it with ... ...FZ-50 features Panasonics mega 0.I.S. (optical image stabilisation) to try to reduce this problem. It works by moving the lens to counteract movement and features two modes: mode one is continually active, while mode 2 only works when the shutter is half pressed, thus saving battery life.
The 2 inch screen is easy to view and can be angled outwards for waist level shooting, although a 2.5 inch screen would have been even better.
The maximum ISO ...

The list price was £420, but we bought one from camera4u.com for £366.00

Advantages: Lens, Video Function Disadvantages: LCD Screen a bit dim
This is a very nice camera for a number of reasons. Firstly, the quality of the lens; it is made by Leica, and is of abnormally high quality for a conpact camera - it is nice and sharp with little chromatic abberation (the green and magenta tones you often get around high-contrast edges from cheaper lenses). The camera offers the ability to capture images in the compact camera standard format of 4:3, or the 3:2 of SLR cameras. The build quality is ... ...- the clip-on lens hood is also made of nice thick plastic. One very nice feature is the fold out 2 inch LCD screen. This is very helpful if you are taking macro images or pictures from a difficult angle. However, it is not particularly bright, so in good weather it is sensible to use the Electronic Viewfinder. This is one of the best EVFs I have seen, with a high resolution and good sharpness, albeit a bit contrasty. The video facility is good quality ...

Advantages: Stunning zoom for those long range shots Disadvantages: You need a tripod for steadying picture when using the Macro Zoom
The camera is so easy to use that you only need to read the book to learn about the special features in depth. I read the book to discover how to put the battery in and then I was away. When I needed to use a feature I looked it up in the instruction book.
The FZ50 has a wonderful zoom range and have been taking some stunning photographs. The lens is outstanding. The image stabilisation is v. good and start-up and multiple picture mode is quick. ...
