Advantages: stylish writing, compelling story, relevant to here and now Disadvantages: you have to share at least some frames of reference to enjoy it, may date quickly
...sentimental about the events. Ultimately, pattern recognition of the title is - in my personal opinion - about searching for the jet-lagged, stretched, lost, mortal soul of the humanity in the world teeming with data, full of attempts by the marketers and advertisers to discover and even create patterns. The final conclusion takes us to the warm, the human, the corporeal. From London, Tokyo and Moscow, Cayce gets to Paris. I'll leave her there.

Advantages: The compulsion of a thriller and yet so much more Disadvantages: It ends.
...are also dense and certainly Pattern Recognition is profoundly, deeply relevant. In this sense Gibson is an anomaly, a blip on the literary landscape for he has a curious ability to sense the very nature of society and with casual incisions as precise as any author before him and doubtless any that will come after, dissects the modern world in such a manner as to be utterly without peer. More to the point he reveals the world in such a manner as ... ...read.
But what is Pattern Recognition? The title itself refers to numerous aspects of the novel, which I shall not spoil for those uninitiated. In simple terms Pattern Recognition deals with Cayce (read Case, not Casey – previous Gibson readers may be amused and think of the protagonist of Neuromancer only this Cayce is female) Pollard, a freelancer who searches for trend and fashions and styles and has an almost eerie ability to recognise the efficaciousness ...

Advantages: an absorbing glimpse of a future as close as tomorrow Disadvantages: more demanding of the reader in style
...buy sight unseen. I pre-ordered Pattern Recognition that day that I heard it was due for release and waited.... careful not to read any of the spoilers or reviews so I could face it fresh.
The day the package arrived I started reading and wow !
After the Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa trilogy I remember being amazed at the evolution in style but consistancy in his parallel world that Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrows Parties showed.

What was a real departure was in context and time.... rather than being far in the future to be labelled science fiction, this book is very much closer to home. In fact it fits much more happily into a straight fiction label than any of the other works. The science is certainly there, but not in a far out way, more in an observation of the technologies tieing us together already - the internet, google, GCI and ...

Advantages: Very familiar, you instantly recognise places by his discriptions Disadvantages: Not really anything new, but old plots in a new way
The main character is Cayce a person who researches what the public want and then passes this information on to marketers. When alot of interest is shown in a series of footage on the web no one really knows anything about Cayce wants to discover the secret behind the footage and is helped in that direction by being asked by her employers to find the secrets behind this phenomenon which is able to generate publicity even though no one knows anything ... ...origin of the footage, despite some reservations about her employer's intentions.
In her search for the truth Cayce travels to many cities which are potrayed typically brilliantly by Gibson. Some cities she visits range from London to Tokyo to Paris.
Anything else I might say will give away a vital part of the plot, but this novel brings recent events in to play and the characters and descriptions of the places visited are unique to Gibso yet so ...
