...decided to go for the Pentax Optio S30 in the end. It cost me £129.90 to buy from a Jessops local store (sorry, Jessops don't sell it on-line).
First Impression:
Opening the box I found the camera, a usb link cable, a manual, a camera-to-TV cable, software, wristband, and advertisments (along with a Pentax survey).
The camera was well protected and even came with two batteries included (didn't last for more than 20 pictures, but even so nice of ... ...it can be argueed that Pentax could have spent less time on features and more time on battery life and loading time. However some of the features are really cool, these include color coding (only display red, green, gray, etc.) or black and white pictures. The best of all however is the fact that you can take a picture normally and then later on edit it to be only black and white, resize it, or add a sound clip to it.
The wheel on top I have not ...

Advantages: Compact, takes AA batteries, loads of features Disadvantages: Long shutter delay- the time from pressing the button to taking the photo
I bought the Pentax Optio S30 because I wanted a compact camera that would fit in my pocket and would be easy to carry around, and it certainly fulfils that requirement- its very slim-lined and portable. Other features I particularly like about this camera are the fact that it takes ordinary AA batteries rather than the Li-ion ones, so it's much cheaper to power, and if you are ever stuck in a situation on the move, where your rechargable batteries ... ...up, you can just nip to the nearest shop and get some regular ones. It also has some very nifty, although not strictly necessary, 'fun' modes, such as black and white filter, panorama assist, super macro and many others. However, I have found that it is very slow at actually taking photos- there's a big time delay between pressing the button and actually taking the photo- almost 2 seconds I'd say, which is a big annoyance, especially if you're trying ...

Advantages: Incredibly stylish due to its looks and size, solid feel and construction, good quality pics Disadvantages: a bit slow on taking pictures
The Pentax Optio s30 is a brilliant camera, cramed pack full with useful features. To start of with, the size and finish of the camera is extremly impressive especially when you see the results it produces. I was looking for something of decent quality I could carry around with me but without finding it a burden - exactly what I got... with a bit more.
I found it very easy to use, while also containg complex manual settings for the more experienced ... ...very good also.
The Pentax does have its flaws, the main one being some slowness, especially recovering between shots, but I find that pre-focusing means I can get action shots perfectly easily. I was in Africa over the summer on safari and the pictures it produced where amazing quality.
The batteries that come with the camera are poor quality, but purchase some rechargables and the battery life is quite convieniant. ...

Advantages: Sleek design and multiple functions, including video and sound recording. Disadvantages: Delayed reaction of several seconds prevents candid shots.
Lucky for me I recived this camera for free when my techno-phobe mother decided is was all too complex for her. Actually mastering the basic cameria functions is relatively striaght forward after a quick flick through the manual. It has multiple functions, such as landscape, portrait, night time, flash, zoom, video and sound recording to name a few. And people never seem to stop getting excited when you turn it on and the lens pops out on its own. ... ...(including myself) who know little about photography and jab at the buttons wildly to try to get the strange symbols to go away. To those more photographically proficient it will all make perfect sense, but the camera itself will be endlessly frustrating. The slight delay, it can not be more than 3 seconds, from clicking the big silver button to the camera taking the picture may seem insignificant but it has become the bane of my photographic aspirations. ...
