I used to have a peugeot 306 1.4 P reg mark 1 on about 120k miles. It was a great car, but bashed to bit falling apart around an engine that purred like a kitten. So when i wanted another reliable car I pursued the 306 again. I got my original P reg in 2002 for £1500 this time I was looking for an R reg Mark 2 at about 2 grand. My friend informed me of a 2001 X reg mark 3 at £2500, i went to look expecting high mileage. It was a gorgeous Meridian SE model. Part leather bucket seats, in Moonstone colour, (Sky blue silver) front driver and passenger and side airbags, cd player, air con with ... more

Advantages Advantages Comfortable seats, quite nippy, nice styling,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Thirsty Engine, Small at the back, Electronics failure, mechanical problems

I bought my car from an independant dealer for about £3500 which is not bad for the condition it was in, had fair mileage for its age just over 41,000 miles. My car is 9 years old when i bought it, it was near enough mint condition only had to get a replaced battery as the car didnt start but was courtesy of the dealer. It is an Automatic Gearbox, chose this as I prefer driving Auto and it was not bad considering that the car had 100BHP, I advise it is worth taking the extra 10BHP purely for driving pleasure rather than the standard 90BHP. Now to discuss in a little bit more detail: Safety: My ... more

Advantages Advantages excellent steering and handling; looks good

Disadvantages Disadvantages now feeling rather old; some quality and electrical niggles

The Peugeot 306 1.6XS is a three-door model. I am reviewing a 1996 "pre-facelift" model. I was looking to replace my Ford Escort 1.6Si with something of a similar size that was fun to drive. I was after a car that was reasonably nippy, had cheap insurance and would be reliable for a weekly commute between Kent and Cornwall for several months. One of the cars I had in mind was the Peugeot 306, and specifically the 1.6XS model - an average model in terms of spec and performance, but with some sporty overtones. One day, I came across a nice-looking, red 306 for the right price, and found that it ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap insurance Quick acceleration

Disadvantages Disadvantages Load at motoway speeds

I had a Peugeot 106 1.1 XN up to about a year ago and then I gave it to a friend of mine. So I started looking for a new car. I always wanted a 306 as my brother’s friend had one and I liked the look of it. So I started looking through the auto trader magazine and Website. I thought I struck gold when a saw a 306 XS 1.6 44K mileage for only £3500. So I got my mum to drive me to the garage took it for a test drive and bought it instantly. What can I say about the 306 XS. It is a very attractive car. I t has colour coded bumpers and looks a lot beefier than the usual 306's. It comes with alloys ... more

Advantages Advantages Very cheap second hand XS has good spec

Disadvantages Disadvantages Electric windows on older cars

I purchased a 306 XS 1600cc, this model is the sporty edition with semi bucket seats, high spec interior and sports exterior, and it cost 3k. My car had 45k on the clock and had two owners, i had driven my mothers car the same model and was impressed by the acceleration of this car, especially in lower gears. The XS had more go in it than most 1.6's will have in a car this size and i estinate this 90bhp engine to reach 60mph in a little over 11 seconds. That is fairly good and from 0-40ish it goes as quick as most things on the road. Just as all small french cars, 1st and 2nd gears have the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good affordable quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages Insurance for young drivers

The 306 has always impressed me as a good looking, value for money car. The value is increased at the moment with some retailers offering free insurance! To relatively young drivers this can resemble a sizeable cost saving. The ride is smooth as a result of the well engineered suspension. There are a number of engine sizes, but I would recommend the 1.6 meridian which retails around the 12k mark. Overall the performance on the 1.6 is good for a car of its size. The interiors are comfortable as standard and buying from such a large company will mean easy available spares. To conclude the car is ... more

Advantages Advantages Petrol is the 'Perfect Car'.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Diesel sounds like a tractor.

Hello everybody. My first ever car was a 1.9diesel Peugeot 306. Now i have a 1.6 Meridian 306. I first fell in love with them when my next door neighbour bought a light blue 306. It looked brilliant in everyway and from every angle. I got my first 306 1.9Diesel when i was 17. It was a super first car, cheap insurance and tax wasn't too bad either. It had really comfy seats, Electric Windows, Electric Sunroof, 4 Speaker sound system. Remote Central Locking PAS, stereo remote by steering wheel, drivers airbag + many more features. It could sit at 100mph comfortably. The only bad thing i can ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can take a bit of maintaining

I am now on my 4th Peugeot 306 which may seem crazy but I just can't get enough of them, this will be my last......I think. The reason for my crazy buying of this car is that every now and then I think that perhaps I should try a different car as this can't be the best there is, I then go looking everywhere for my next dream car and find myself falling in love with another 306. I have the xs version which is just amazing, it has sports seats which are so comfy, I used to get a bad back in my old cars but this is just like sitting on air, they also look pretty cool as well. My 306 is a L reg so ... more

    3 Stars Quick review of Peugeot 306 1.6 by jmp89 11/05/2009
I have this car, i've had it for approximately 10 months, and although it was second hand, it was in pristene condtition when i purchased it, with only 40k on the clock. within 2 months problems occured, i had to have entirely new brake system on it, the fan and timer belt needed to be replaced, and to my surprise upon a heavy rainfall, my passenger footwell filled with water. Apparently either door seals or thegasket around the wing mirror are extremely prone to leakage. Aside from that everything is brilliant with this car. cheap to insure and economical

Advantages Advantages Looks good, enough space without being a "family car!"

Disadvantages Disadvantages High insurance for young drivers

I used to own the 1.6 Peugeot 306. On a Y plate, it looked good, inside and out, was comfortable, reliable and was pretty nippy. Half leather seats were good for wiping clean and the silver trim looked really good. Air-con, alloys, fogs etc were all nice little touches that made it into a really nice car. I had the 5 door version which meant it was really accessible, and with the included isofix it was easy for putting baby seats in, and safe enough to transport kids! Decent sized boot, big enough for buggies etc! Watch out for noisy power steering, as i understand this is something that can ... more
