Advantages Advantages great drive, reliable, very cheap and easy to fix

    Disadvantages Disadvantages fuel consumption

My review is based entirely on my experiences with my current car (405 1.6 carb model) and a previous 405 (1.9 SRi). Brief history: The 405 was launched back in 1988 as a competitor to the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier and in my opinion singlehandedly raised the standard of the family saloon. The mk 1 cars were far better equiped compared to competitors cars, but had a few niggles such as squeaky interior trim (mine suffers this!) and some reliability issues (a lot revolving around the carburettor units). Available engines - 1.6 & 1.9 carb, 1.9i and 1.9 diesel (and turbo diesel). In late ... more

Maybe I was very lucky when I found a 405 estate for £550. The clock had 94000 on it and every seemed fine. I have had it for about 3 months now and have discovered that the clock had been tampered with and a cog disconnected from the milometer. However, it is still running just fine. I have found it relatively easy to get parts for it from scrap yards and if you have access to the channel, then buying parts from France is a lot more cost effective. The car runs well and is spacious. There is leg room and the boot is nice and big. The parcel shelf slides in two sections instead of ataching to ... more

    Advantages Advantages quick; comfortable drive

Disadvantages Disadvantages high fuel consumption; some ex-taxis around

Peugeot 405 1.9 GR The family orientated Peugeot 405 was one of Peugeots main sellers throughout the 90’s replaced by the 406 a few years back it now makes for a wise 2nd hand buy. The styling is similar to many family saloons though it is slightly less boxy looking than many of its rivals. Other models in the range benefit from alloy wheels and a discreet rear spoiler which certainly add to the aesthetics of the car. The interior is very comfortable with a good driving position and a solid feel to it. Facilities vary greatly throughout the range depending on age and model and as such it is ... more

Advantages Advantages Reliable, Good Fuel Economy, Still doesn't look too dated

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some of them getting on a bit now

The Peugeot 405 is a great car. Designed by Pinin-farina so it looks nice as well. The saloon is big enough to transport any amount of luggage (the boot is absolutely huge) and the estate is even better - both are extremely comfortable. Features are excellent for the age of the car, even the reasonably base model (GL) came with electric windows. I am a bit of a boy racer at heart, so I have fitted a leather interior and a turbo engine to it, but as a first car it was absolutely fantastic. Easy to drive, and a very smooth ride. The handling of these cars simply cannot be beaten. French cars may ... more

    Advantages Advantages all about driving

    Disadvantages Disadvantages rust rust rust

I have an 88 peugeot 405 GR 1580, two years ago passing 335000km without any higher investments, the car still pulls 195 on flat and 205 downhill with 92 hp, providing so so enjoeable massage to my ears. The poorest thing is bodywork, which I must say doesn't count in honour to French, but comparing it to same generation opels(vauxhal) or fords it's still 6 years younger(rust). After 2 year debuit restauration (my first), engine cleaning(broken piston change, teflons, not rings) was an enjoeable task while rust removal was lots of headaches etc.. But coming to the end I just cant wait to turn ... more
