A nice plain English op on a car. I purchased my Peugeot 406Hdi rapier Saloon in December 2001. Only the second brand new car I had ever purchased. The first being a Peugeot 305 a few years ago. That car had given me many trouble free miles so I thought I would stick with them. I suppose it’s a bit like the devil you know. As a cab driver in London it had to be a diesel car. Economy is the Number one rule as saving money these days is so important. There was a company in Scotland offering the best deal so I phoned, and arranged delivery. A week later my shiny metallic China blue Peugeot 406 ... more

Advantages Advantages Drives like a petrol but gives better feul consumption

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a drivers car.Very dainty handling.

I guess the first things that come to mind when you mention deisel engines are noise, slow acceleration, and sluggish performance. All of which this car lacks. When standing still it is a bit noisier than a petrol but once on the move it is as smooth and as quite as a petrol engine. The turbo deisel engine (2.1) is quite nippy as well. Put your foot down and there is an instant response, even though you get a cloud of smoke from the back. This car comes well equipt with all the usual toys you'd expect from a car of this class and some new ones.I particulary like the double cental locking system ... more

Advantages Advantages fuel economy, refinement, handling

Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive dealer servicing, average image

I bought my 406 when it was 1 years old with 15000 miles. Since then it has done 45000 miles in two years. I have been very pleased with it except for the front disk brakes which I will come to later. It's most oustanding features are fuel economy and refinement. On my 40 mile commute covering A roads and fast dual carriageway, the 406 averages 54mpg. I think that is an excellent figure for a car of this size, (the lowest I ever got was 49mpg). I do not drive slowly and overtake whenever safe; indeed 4th gear overtaking performance is very good. Standing start acceleration is not as good as an ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to drive comfortable

    Disadvantages Disadvantages parts expensive

When I choose a car I need one that apart from being reliable it needs to be comfortable. Being 6ft 1 inches with my legs making up a greater part of my length / Height makes my first criteria can I sit in this car with comfort. When I needed another car last year I had to consider a 65 mile journey to and from work. So comfort then fuel type was critical. Ever since I first saw a 406 I thought they looked a nice car. So I brought a second hand 406 saloon its a HDi 2 Ltr Desiel 90 BHP. It fitted me like a glove gives my legs room enough to be almost fully stretched out.Its so easy to drive and ... more

Advantages Advantages Spacious, powerful, comfortable, economical

Disadvantages Disadvantages Many electrical faults, lots of blind spots, expensive parts.

Having owned my 406 for over a year now I have got to know it inside out and found out a lot of its characteristics, good and bad, which make it a car you will both love and hate. When you first walk up to a 406 you cant help but fall in love with its 'growling' bonnet shape and sleek bodyline.Aesthetically this car can still hold its own. Work your way inside and you'll find a pretty luxurious interior with polished walnut style trim on the dash and door panels and enough knobs and buttons to keep Scotty from Star Trek happy. That is where the 406 has went wrong. Too many electrical faults ... more

Advantages Advantages Very well equiped, very cheap to buy second hand, very reliable diesel engines, quite powerful

Disadvantages Disadvantages Driver seat was uncomfortable for me, Some minor electrical gremlins

Well, I've used and relied on Ciao.co.uk for a number of years now to check reviews of cars and motorcycles, and I've always found it to be reliable and balanced, so I thought it's about time I contribute my own review! :) I bought my Peugeot 406 GLX 2.0 HDi just over a year ago with 130.000 miles on the clock. I only paid £1000 for it on eBay. The previous owner had just done the cambelt. Only issue was that the A/C didn't work. For £1000 I could tolerate that! So, it's been a year and a bit of ownership now and I've since added 32000 miles to the car, travelling back and forth to Holland ... more

    Advantages Advantages economical, reliable,

    Disadvantages Disadvantages shabby finish

I have now owned my Peogeot 406 diesel estate (2.0 HDI) for 4 years. It has started first time every day throughout this time, is economical, especially on long runs, comfortable, quiet and a pleasure to drive. The electronic climate control keeps the interior environment pleasant regardless of what the weather is doing outside - it is a real cocoon. However, there have been many niggles. The windscreen wipters are computer-controlled and don't always do what I want them to, especially when turning them off!. The boy trim (little plastic crhome strips) fall off regularly, and the front ... more

Advantages Advantages Load space fuel economy

Disadvantages Disadvantages ECU and tatty trim quality

I have owned this car from new ( May 1999) . Have now just clocked up 130,000 Miles. So feel qualified to talk about this. The car is quite heavy on brakes. These need to be replaced fairly regularly. The trim, in particular plastic overlays around the windows is getting tatty, creased and breaking off. The paintwork has lasted well and the interior upholstery is also wearing well. I have had the clutch control cable break once, this appears to be a common fault. I have also had to replace the indicator stalk as well, also a common problem. I have also had the complete exhaust system replaced ... more

Advantages Advantages Comfortable, good value, reliable

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Minor electrical faults

I have a 52 reg Peugeot 406 HDI LX (90hp) which I bought second hand 2 years ago in March 2006 at 3 years old and with 42,000 miles on the clock. At the time I was travelling long motorway and non-motorway mileage and needed a reliable and comfortable diesel car which would be happy on the many types of journey I was making. As far as I am concerned the 406 turned out to an excellent car for my needs. Aside from a couple of minor electrical niggles (fuel guage occasionally sticking and oil guage showing the wrong reading) there have been very few problems at all in the 45,000 miles I've ... more
