Practical Peugeot.

Advantages: Reliable, economic, practical.
Disadvantages: None

...a car. I purchased my Peugeot 406Hdi rapier Saloon in December 2001. Only the second brand new car I had ever purchased. The first being a Peugeot 305 a few years ago. That car had given me many trouble free miles so I thought I would stick with them. I suppose it’s a bit like the devil you know. As a cab driver in London it had to be a diesel car. Economy is the Number one rule as saving money these days is so important. There was a company in ...
...my shiny metallic China blue Peugeot 406 car arrived. I like a largish car that’s comfortable. I like reliability and economy fuel consumption. Speed is not that important, I suppose functional is the best description. The Peugeot 406 fitted my needs on description, but would it fill my needs on use. The controls and the interior. I sat in the car and started to look through the manual to try to get to grips with the controls. The steering wheel ...

Impressive Deisel Car

Advantages: Drives like a petrol but gives better feul consumption
Disadvantages: Not a drivers car.Very dainty handling.

I guess the first things that come to mind when you mention deisel engines are noise, slow acceleration, and sluggish performance. All of which this car lacks. When standing still it is a bit noisier than a petrol but once on the move it is as smooth and as quite as a petrol engine. The turbo deisel engine (2.1) is quite nippy as well. Put your foot down and there is an instant response, even though you get a cloud of smoke from the back. This car ...
...from a car of this class and some new ones.I particulary like the double cental locking system which automatically shuts any open windows once you lock it with the remote control. The driving experience is too light for my liking.Doesnt feel like you are driving at all, almost feels like it is driving itself. The clutch, steering, and pedals are feather light and move effortlessly. Some would find this a good quality but I like a tougher feel to a ...

406 2.0 hdi GLX manual V-reg

Advantages: fuel economy, refinement, handling
Disadvantages: expensive dealer servicing, average image

I bought my 406 when it was 1 years old with 15000 miles. Since then it has done 45000 miles in two years. I have been very pleased with it except for the front disk brakes which I will come to later. It's most oustanding features are fuel economy and refinement. On my 40 mile commute covering A roads and fast dual carriageway, the 406 averages 54mpg. I think that is an excellent figure for a car of this size, (the lowest I ever got was 49mpg). ...
...4th gear overtaking performance is very good. Standing start acceleration is not as good as an equivalent petrol, but then that's the same for the majority of diesels. Refinement is also excellent. At 70mph the engine is doing 2250rpm, indeed at 100mph it's doing just 3100rpm. It just loves to cruise at very high speeds, 100mph feels just like 70mph. Handling is good, the car feels composed at all times and it takes a lot of speed to get the car ...

Long legged beastie

Advantages: Easy to drive comfortable
Disadvantages: parts expensive

When I choose a car I need one that apart from being reliable it needs to be comfortable. Being 6ft 1 inches with my legs making up a greater part of my length / Height makes my first criteria can I sit in this car with comfort. When I needed another car last year I had to consider a 65 mile journey to and from work. So comfort then fuel type was critical. Ever since I first saw a 406 I thought they looked a nice car. So I brought a second hand ...
...It fitted me like a glove gives my legs room enough to be almost fully stretched out.Its so easy to drive and dosent feel like a big car when driving it handles excellently for what it is has all the power I need and fill up the tank and you have a range over 800 miles. Electric windows for both front and rear including a lock on the drivers buttons to stop children opening the windows. I like being able to open the rear windows especially when ...

Peugeot. The Good, The Bad, But Not Ugly!!

Advantages: Spacious, powerful, comfortable, economical
Disadvantages: Many electrical faults, lots of blind spots, expensive parts.

Having owned my 406 for over a year now I have got to know it inside out and found out a lot of its characteristics, good and bad, which make it a car you will both love and hate. When you first walk up to a 406 you cant help but fall in love with its 'growling' bonnet shape and sleek bodyline.Aesthetically this car can still hold its own. Work your way inside and you'll find a pretty luxurious interior with polished walnut style trim on the dash ...
...Scotty from Star Trek happy. That is where the 406 has went wrong. Too many electrical faults because the car relies on computer operated items. Many problems such as a 'Low Oil Level' warning and 'Airbag Warning' Lights coming on although oil level is fine and airbags have checked out okay. The main talking point is the 2.0 hdi engine which alledgedly punts out 110bhp. Having used mine to go camping with a fair load in the back, and to tow my ...

Peogeot 406 estate

Advantages: economical, reliable,
Disadvantages: shabby finish

I have now owned my Peogeot 406 diesel estate (2.0 HDI) for 4 years. It has started first time every day throughout this time, is economical, especially on long runs, comfortable, quiet and a pleasure to drive. The electronic climate control keeps the interior environment pleasant regardless of what the weather is doing outside - it is a real cocoon. However, there have been many niggles. The windscreen wipters are computer-controlled and don't ...
...them off!. The boy trim (little plastic crhome strips) fall off regularly, and the front passenge seat squeaks when not occupied, which is most of the time. I have had many small problems of this nature for about two years. They are annoying, but do not detract from the overall value of having a reliable car. The fact that this model is the estate version, of course has added benefits. Load carrying problems just don't exist. I often have to carry ...

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI Estate 1999 T Reg

Advantages: Load space fuel economy
Disadvantages: ECU and tatty trim quality

I have owned this car from new ( May 1999) . Have now just clocked up 130,000 Miles. So feel qualified to talk about this. The car is quite heavy on brakes. These need to be replaced fairly regularly. The trim, in particular plastic overlays around the windows is getting tatty, creased and breaking off. The paintwork has lasted well and the interior upholstery is also wearing well. I have had the clutch control cable break once, this appears to be ...
...indicator stalk as well, also a common problem. I have also had the complete exhaust system replaced, very expensve, especially the catalyst. The front tyres also need replacing after about 14K, because of weight of engine and power steering. Having said all this, the fuel economy is excellent, usually 50MPG. The load space is excellent, throw everything in and the airconditioning is ok, just replaced the condesor on it, it had a leak. Overall the ...

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI (90) LX (2002)

Advantages: Comfortable, good value, reliable
Disadvantages: Minor electrical faults

I have a 52 reg Peugeot 406 HDI LX (90hp) which I bought second hand 2 years ago in March 2006 at 3 years old and with 42,000 miles on the clock. At the time I was travelling long motorway and non-motorway mileage and needed a reliable and comfortable diesel car which would be happy on the many types of journey I was making. As far as I am concerned the 406 turned out to an excellent car for my needs. Aside from a couple of minor electrical niggles ...
...reading) there have been very few problems at all in the 45,000 miles I've travelled since I bought it. The engine has been excellent and continues to be so, it's comfortable to drive, especially over long distances and it's relatively fuel efficient for a large car (approx. 40-45mpg). Highly recomended as a good value second hand car. ...

A comfortable and reliable car

Advantages: very economical and comfortable
Disadvantages: servicing with recognised dealer can be expensive

Having decided to get myself a bigger car i shopped around for a couple of weeks.I have always liked the look of the 406 and decided to test one.Once i got out onto the road i felt as if i had owned the car for years. It was extremely comfortable and very easy to drive. For a diesel car i was amazed at how quiet the engine sounded and also how quick the car moved considering its size. Having finally deciding on a 2000 model with 60000 miles on the ...
