Advantages Advantages Recordings Play On Any DVD Player, Good Quality Recordings, Thumbnails Of Recordings...

Disadvantages Disadvantages Annoying Delay Before Recording...

I dont know if your like me but I was always recording programs but never watching them back because I couldnt be bothered to hunt through the stacks of tapes (normally not labelled) to find the correct one then spend another 20 mintues fast forwarding and rewinding trying to find exactly what I was looking for... No? Maybe it was just me then! But even so thats the main reason I decided to buy a DVD recorder. I had seen a few about made by companies I had never heard of but the DVDR70 from Philips caught my eye. I saw it in my local Tesco for £249.99 but it was still a little too expensive ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to set up, excellent quality for the price

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unintuitive remote, dull menu system

Q: What is it? Who’s it designed for? A: The DVDR70 recorder is Philips first real attempt to slash prices in this market, making a DVD recorder that is able to match top quality DVD players in price, as well as offering better general playback quality than many of its competitors. Sure, there are cheaper recorders on the market, but they will always show themselves to be a poor investment in the long run. What you get with this model is a very good-looking, functional machine, with a few neat touches thrown in. It’s the perfect choice for those looking to ditch that dusty old VCR, and embrace ... more

Background: Like any other new product on the market, it takes time for the price to drop to an affordable rate which will draw in the customers. With the high rate of development and technology advancement in this category, DVD recorders have almost halved in price in just the space of a year. More and more companies are entering the market to make and distribute this type of product in order to capitalise on a potential gold mine, more competition equals a drop in price as companies reluctantly fight it out between each other. It’s no surprise in this new and fresh segment of the market that ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, all the fuctions you could need

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can give low quality on longer recording time

My mum and dad wanted to enter the 21st Century and wanted a DVD player! I was quite shocked that they wanted something technical and I came up with a great idea. I gave them my oldish DVD player which works really well and then I used the money that my mum gave me to buy another DVD player but one that would record. This make and model was just what I was looking for. It's one of the cheapest record-able DVD's on the market and that was the main reason why I brought it. Many of the recordable DVD machines are still expensive and you can easily pay around £400 upwards for one. I found this one ... more

Advantages Advantages Very realiable, solid machine

Disadvantages Disadvantages One or Two niggles from slowness to not liking cheaper discs

We've had this machine for nearly 3 years now. Its not perfect, and it does have its own little niggles, but once you get used to them, overall its an excellent machine, and so far reliable so if you are looking for something and you come across one of these machines I would say its worth a look. First the best aspects of the recorder. Plenty of choice on recording times. From very high quality of an hour, through to up to 6 hours on a disc. Excellent quality of picture and sound, which although does drop off at 6 hours, up to 4 hours, the drop off isn't too noticeable, and between 1 and 2.5 ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good looks

Disadvantages Disadvantages 2 machines had faults - Philips could do with improving quality control!

Every Xmas my wife and I tend to treat ourselves to one of the latest gadgets. We have owned a JVC DVD player for a few years now and thought it about time that we got a DVD recorder. I noticed that Tesco was selling a Philips DVDR70 for around £160, and then there was the points on our loyalty card, so we thought, why not? Philips has been around for many years now so we thought we were getting a good product. Unfortunately, we couldn't have been more wrong... With anticipation we took it out of the box, went through all the set-up, tuning it into the correct channels etc.-which wasn't ... more

    Advantages Advantages NICE LOOK

Disadvantages Disadvantages malfunctions after a short time. clunky operation and slow

Over the years we have purchased many Philips products and have generally been pleased with them. When purchasing a DVD Recorder we naturally assumed we would be receiving a good quality product with the type of customer service support and back up associated with a branded product, we got that SO WRONG! We purchased the DVDR70 from a major high street retailer. We were in the process of moving so we did not use the recorder for three months. Eventually we moved in to our new home with the recorder still fully boxed. I installed it, which was pretty easy. A friend came to visit and explained ... more

Advantages Advantages Cost only £180 and its a Philips

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

I bought this DVDR last week to replace my Philips DVD player. The set up is quick. The instructions are of course rubbish on horrible re-cycled paper. But Philips can be e-mailed and they respond quite quickly. The only problem is with the Monitor/TV/DVD buttons. You really have no idea where you are! Apart from that the picture quality is superb. The timer function is almost identical to my Philips VCR as is the layout of the remote. The fast forward is a bit iffy, as a quick press takes you forward a chapter (5 mins on auto chaptering) and you have to hold it down to engage 4X, 8 X and 32X ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages no dv sockets

Recordable DVD, once you purchase this one you will never want to go back to tape ever again! First of all this dvd records DVDR+ DVDRW+ (discs are about £1 each in your local computer store, but very expensive in places like argos or dixons) I have made a few recordings for friends and all have played on their machines so far. You have a few differnt quality settings for recording, 1 hour, 2 hour, 2.5 hour,3 hour, 4 hour and 6 hour. I would say that the 6 hour quality setting is about the same as a normal video recording, so i use 4 hours or less. It has 2x scart sockets, 1x s-video in, 1x s ... more
