Advantages: ease of use/setup Disadvantages: stuck to the dvd+ format
On purchasing Philips DVDR880 recorder (dvd+rw format)everything was fine for first few months(infact under used) and then for no apparent reason would get 'DISC ERROR' messages on loading some shop brought dvd films.
All available methods to remedy were tried (ie lense cleaner etc)and Philips contacted as a last resort! Only help offered so far by them was to upgrade firmware in player and see how it went on! Still problem persisted and Philips ... ...and a half ago and Philips discontiuned it a year after it went on sale speaks highly for it i think! As for functions and ease of use it has everything is easy to use. Even instruction and setup was very easy to follow. So buyer beware and buy either a later model ie one thats been on the market a while or try another brand! Footnote 16/03/04:
Philips have now taken the player back , repaired it (unknown as yet repairs) and are sending back tommorow! ...

Advantages: Random access to all recordings and scene selection very handy Disadvantages: Slow initial reading of dvd movies before displaying the menu for selection
One of my best digital equipment buys,does everything that has been described in terms of facilities i.e.random access to recordings,ffwd and rwd feature,scene fwd and rwd,scene selection and all the other facilities listed.With the dvdr880 I have not only replaced my vcr, but my cd player too.However the one main setback is the reading time which seems to be quite long in the case of dvd movies,(must be something to do with the dvd rather than the ... ...ones with less patience at that stage.When investing in this piece of equipment get yourself a disc cleaner as you'll need this for recommended cleaning of discs to maintainquality, otherwise there's a risk of your viewings being stopped towards the end which will not be pleasant when it happens.I did my research b4 buying and in the end all i had to debate on was the different prices quoted by various sellers. ...
