Advantages Advantages Wide Range of Compatible formats, Good quality recordings, good size, value for money, easy set-up

Disadvantages Disadvantages Occasional flat audio, Manual is very confusing (just worked it out myself)

    * Initial Note * At last, we can now record our favorite programs on to DVD. Slowly and surely VHS is becoming the old BETA MAX, and before you know it we will no longer see viedos in the shops. DVDs are surely, taking over. DVD Recorders are surely a step in the right direction -moving away from the drone, and irritating dull quality that we have been used to for the past 20 years. The Philips DVDR890 is just one of these new innovations, and as I have experienced, is one of the better ones on the market at the moment, reasonably priced to as low as £480. So why is it a good buy? *Features* ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to manage, good quality recordings

Disadvantages Disadvantages Format issues (see below)

Without most of us really noticing a thing, the recordable DVD market has progressed in leaps and bounds. Could it be time to banish your video machine to the fiery depths of the electronic abyss? Read the review and then some important info on DVD Formats. Philips DVDR880/890 Both very similar machines, just varying slightly in price and features and like the new released models by Philips, they have been good sellers in a volatile and suspicious market. Features - Turn the first few pages of the manual and you would forgiven for believing you have purchased a stylish looking VCR. On closer ... more

Advantages Advantages Versatile than others, Functions, Layout, Design

    Disadvantages Disadvantages See Below

Home DVD Recording is a process of un-learning. Replacing tape with a disc and thinking in circles as opposed to a straight line. Sound confusing? As a newcomer to DVD recording I managed to stumble through the process reasonably efficiently. I had a camcorder hooked up and recording within 15 minutes and accidently created a chapter half way through. But once you familiarise yourself with the process of DVD recording and put behind you the VHS recording methods you are accustomed to, it's almost easy. Setting up the DVD Recorder is similar to hooking up a VHS, you need to tune in TV stations ... more

Advantages Advantages Higher quality recordings, easy to use.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

If you’re thinking of buying a new DVD player or video you may want to consider this, the Philips DVDR890 DVD recorder. Basically it combines all the quality and features normally associated with a DVD player with the ability of a normal VHS video recorder to record programmes off air except recording are made onto a blank DVD disk. A year ago the DVD recorders were launched onto the UK market, the problem was they cost £1000, now this 3rd generation Philips machine can be picked up ( if you shop around on the Internet) for half the price. The 890 uses the DVD+ system of blank discs ... more

Advantages Advantages The all-important record button; DVDR's take up less room than VHS tapes

Disadvantages Disadvantages Big & clunky; 'Extended Play' recordings can be quite low quality; some players will not play some DVDRs

It hardly makes sense these days to buy a DVD player that does not have a record facility, especially now they are so much cheaper than when Philips first came out with a home consumer DVD Recorder (I paid about £350, if I remember correctly). I bought it to transfer my video collection onto DVD, since DVDs take up a lot less shelf space than do VHS tapes. However, be warned that in the EP+ record mode (which enables you to record roughly 6 hours), picture quality degrades quite a lot. I also don't like the front menu system, as if your video title is "too long", it just disappears off the ... more

Advantages Advantages This gadget has all the features you need, you'll love it until!

Disadvantages Disadvantages When you get an update C.D. from phillips you'll be lucky if it ever works again!

The thing I found when I bought one pf these recorders last year in 2003 was, it was great at you had all the fun of being able to watch the recording in the exact same quality of what you recorded. You could hold a frame and it was perfect even on a 36'' television the quality was great. But then, when Phillips sent me an upgrade disc for the recorder, I put it in like the loyal servant I am, it never worked properly again! More than twenty times I had to go back to the store that I bought it from. It took months before I could get my money back! And, for all my troubles going back and forth ... more
