Advantages: Smooth Legs ... no mess Disadvantages: Painful!!
Its strange how society has brought us up to be ashamed of hairy armpits and hairy legs!!
I have tried many of the hair removal ideas out there, from shaving to creams to actually removing the hairs themselves. For many years I have used immac hot wax, but was fed up of the constant mess, and leaky tubs, so my thoughtful fiance (now ex-fiance) brought me an epilator for my birthday!!!
*** What exactly is an Epilator ***
The word epilate simply ... ...hair off, an epilator actually removes it using the row of tweezers it has instead of a blade which pull the hairs completely out (ouch I hear you say!!)
*** Presentation / Packaging ***
The epilator comes with a nice handy white bag to keep it in, along with a little brush to clean it, the epilator itself and the attachment (I can't think of another word to describe it).
The epilator is ergonomically designed to fit into your hand with ease, ...

...the other one was the Philips Satin Ice 2 in 1.
He was not desperately trying to tell me something, as I already had one of these 'electric pluckers' as he calls them, I have had 2 since I started needing to get rid of those unwanted hairs. And I had been using it regularly, once a week. He just heard me moan that my old (5 years old) epilator was overheating, and I was considering buying one of these 'new generation' epilators myself.

The instruction manual is full of useful tips and clear explanations (with drawings) as well as warnings.
I read the said manual, and discovered that I would have to wait 6 hours before I could try my brand new toy, as the cooling system in its cassette has got to be left in the freezer for that amount of time before it can be used ...

Advantages: No hair for weeks, hurts less than other epilators Disadvantages: Still painful
I received my Satin Ice for christmas (perhaps somebody was trying to tell me something). It is revonutionally in the fact the epilator cools your skin before it rips the hairs out from the root. This is meant to make the process less painful.
What you get for £50.00 (from boots December 2000):
~ Epilator
~ Skin cooler
~ Freezer cassette
~ Protective cover
~ Carry case
~ Instruction manual
~ Cleaning brush
~ Head for shaving
The actual ... ...appliance with three-pin plug. Both snap together and fit your hand perfectly. The skin cooler is the unique feature of this epilator. It is an oval piece of plastic with metal at the bottom, which when placed on your skin cools it down enough to make the whole process a lot less painful. Inside the plastic is a liquid, when placed in the freezer inside the cassette for about 2 hours it becomes solid. You can then take it out of the freezer, remove ...

...decided to opt for the Philips Satin Ice Epilator. This model appealled to me because it has a detachable cooler which is supposed to numb the skin and being a bit of a scaredy cat, it sounded less painful. You must put the cooler in the freezer two hours before you intend to use it, however, you can store it in the freezer so it is always ready to use. Also, with this model Philips offer a "three month money back 'no pain' guarantee" which I think ... ...How lucky is that?
Philips offer a money back 'no-pain' guarantee but stress that you need to perservere with it for three months. I did find it painful at first but now I don't bat an eyelid. It's something you can live with and, in my opinion, it really is the best option to help you have smooth and silky stubble free legs. For this reason, I would highly recommend it and won't be claiming my money back.
I paid £36.00 for the Philips Satin Ice ...

Why do women do this to themselves? There's no way a man would consider having a large noisy set of mechanised tweezers rolled over their legs.
I don't know why I invested £55 in this. It seemed like such a good idea at the time. I'm not a particularly hairy person, so I didn't think it would be too painful. How wrong can one person be?!

Advantages: Long lasting effect, only buy once Disadvantages: Pain, somewhat time consuming
In my search for long lasting, smooth and non-hairy pins, I have tried probably every method known of hair removal, from shaving to waxing and sugaring. Still not 100% happy with any of the afore mentioned torturing procedures, I bought a Satin Ice Epilator from my Littlewoods catalogue. I choose this brand because it was on offer at the time! You also get full, very informative instructions.

Advantages: No hairs. What more could you want? Disadvantages: Quite expensive
Unlike other epilators, this model has a unique ice-attachment which numbs your skin immediately before epilation takes place. You just pop the special cartridge in the freezer for about three hours before use, then take it out and place it in the special holder provided. This then clicks onto the main epilator unit and you're ready to go.

Advantages: less hair growth Disadvantages: ow, ow
I bought the Phillips Satin Ice as a present to myself. It cost me around £50 at the time, but I was determined to convert from shaving.
First impressions:
It's a light green in colour and quite small. The ice pack as it were has a handy compartment to sit in before you put it in the freezer, and it doesn't take up much room.
It also comes with a handy store away bag.
How it works:
The satin ice works by numbing your skin with the ice pack before ... ...The ice pack stays in the freezer until you are ready to start shaving as it were, and then you just slot it onto the machine. (you are told in the manual to be careful of any condensation as the satin ice is powered by electric).
As I said the machine is an epilator (pulls hairs from the roots to prevent thicker growth).
Pain free?:
It hurts me every time I use it. I don't think any type of hair removal is completely pain free when you take into ...

Advantages: no mess, cheap in the long run, no hair for weeks Disadvantages: hurts a bit, requires access to the mains,
For along while I always used the creams but this was a messy process and one that I did not enjoy doing. I then discovered waxing strips but found them to be expensive, messy and to be honest, they didnt work as I could not get the technique right. Shaving is ok but with the regrowth, this is what appeals with the epilator.
I chose this model purely because it was on offer from Boots. When I opened the box it came with a handy brush, a case to ... ...the case but I am sure it could be useful if you travel a lot.
This epilator rips the hair out from the roots using rotating discs that act like a row of tweezers. You glide it over the particular area and it picks up the hair and pulls it out. Fortunately it takes the hair 4 weeks or so to grow backand it is softer and so after a while it becomes less visible.
Although it is painful the first time it is used, for some reason each time it is used ...

Advantages: Pretty packaging, has an after cleaning device, the cooler is a nice idea, whether it hurts or not -it does remove hair, small, easy to use Disadvantages: slower than waxing or shaving, expensive, you have to plug it in, PAIN
I'm always trying to find a hair removal that will last the longest - however much it hurts. Some epliator manufacturers claim the hair can take up to 4 weeks to grow back, some say 6 weeks. So I thought I'd try it out. This particular brand claims you have 60 days of smooth legs when you use this product. The Satin Ice Epilator is called so because it comes with a skin cooler that you attach to the epilator as you're proceeding with the hair removal, ... ...is removed, therefore reducing the pain. When I bought mine I also recieved a 90 day "less pain money back" guarantee, I'm not sure if this offer is still around, you'd have to contact the manufacturer beforehand. The packaging is gorgeous; there's a pretty little bag to put the epilator inside (I'm using it as a handbag instead). Unforunatly I have to say I didn't like it, and I've only used it once - I only noticed a 90 day money back guarantee ...

I have had my satin ice for two years now and I wouldn't be without it. Being of pale skin and dark hair, I was spending a fortune for waxing and I found it never really convienient. having to wait for hair to grow and trying to fit in an appointment at the salon. Yes I use it on the bikini area with not too many problems. I find if the hairs are trimmed down and that I keep the skin palled taught it is a reletively painfree experience. At least no worse then waxing. I recommened exfoliating daily (not the day of hair removel) and moisturising the area straight after with aloe vera.
The holding the skin taught is a good tip when using this on any part of the body as it really does lessen any ...

I bought one of these epillators a short while back. Coming in at around the £40 mark, it is a little on the pricey side, but I haven't bought depillatory creams or razors since. So I think I win!

Advantages: Hair free for 3 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Disadvantages: none that I found
Okay! So everyday during the summers and 4 days a week during the winters I would shave taking roughly between 5-10 minutes. Then a workmate had mentioned something about her epilator. Then we get to talking and her shock when I mention that I shave. So she convinced me that I needed an epilator.

...with me on this one, Philips are currently happy to refund your money if you return the product within three months of purchase. Generally I found epilation much better in the long term than having to shave every few days.
