Advantages: Three Excellent Programs, High-powered image-editing tools Disadvantages: PRICE
...am taking about the new Photoimpact here - Photoimpact 8!!!!
Photoimpact 7 was so packed full of goodies that it's hard to imagine what Ulead could do to its flagship program to take it any further. But it seems to have found a way, and Photimpact 8 is the result.
It slots neatly into the mid-range image-editing market, alongside Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro. It's far more sophisticated than buget-entry offerings like Photo Express and ... ...in their own right.
Photoimpact 8 is a combined image browser and catloguing application - the equivolent of Media Center 3.1, shipped with Jascs Paint shop Pro anniversary Edition. GIF animator 5, meanwhile, is Uleads rival to Jascs animation Shop 3. GIF animator 5, though is so far ahead of its rival, that there's no competition.
So what exactly has Ulead done to tempt existing Photoimpact users into upgrading, or users of other programs to jumping ...

Advantages: Large amount of effects and manipulations possible. Disadvantages: Takes a bit of time to learn to use it properly.
I'm talking about Photoimpact 3.02 here. Although it took me a bit of time to work out what I could achieve with it the help is extremely useful and in-depth. This came free on a magazine disc so I can't comment on price but graphics and photo effects that can be achieved with this are nothing short of remarkable. I stil use a P75 so start up is a bit slow but thats not a function of the program as I'm running it below the recommended spec. All in ...

Advantages: Easy to use for beginners Disadvantages: some items hard to find
...potential. Selection Tools.
Photoimpact features the usual selection tools common to nearly all editors like circle, rectangle and freehand (lassoo) which are easy to apply. A good tip for improving a photo is rather than freehand around a face for example before sharpening it, is to draw a quck rectangle or circle as this way if you don't oversharpen it will blend in with the whole photo. I use this for improving my daughters face on photo's and ... ...Overall.
Overall, PhotoImpact is the perfect image editor for the novice as the thumbnails take all the guesswork out of the settings to apply, unlike other programmes like Paint Shop Pro. However, a lot of experimenting will uncover modes and features that are hard to access, so root around the menus and easy palette to your hearts content. Once you're competent with it you'll be amazed at what you can do. U-lead are now on version 8, and a demo ...

Advantages: easy to use with a scanner Disadvantages: some of the options a bit complicated
Ulead is a great program if you use a scanner a lot. It does all the things you would expect a photo program to do, and is very easy to use with a scanner if you have one. I have a scanner and I can scan pictures straight inbto Photo impact. It then has a wizard which will enhance allyour photos and it does a good job. You can change the brightness and colour and make the images sharper if you need to. There is quite complicated menus but you soon ...

Advantages: versatile, extremely well-priced, terrific range of filters and effects Disadvantages: odd colour management
...but as versatile as Photoshop? Photoimpact 5 is just that. IT IS GORGEOUS. The program is so chock full of filters, fills, effects etc. Wow. This is an instant saving of a kazillion quid. Plus you can point the program at any filters you already have, and it will just bring them right in for you. Very handy. You could spend a lifetime experimenting. Fortunately you don't have to - after a few seconds you can get results worthy of any of the graphic ... ...the graphic I want in Photoimpact 5 and reassemble the slices in my fave HTML editor. Get this on line. Costs about 50 quid-ish from the ulead site. It's worth four times that. Only down side - not totally brilliant for the purist. I am always messing about with colour to make sure it is web safe. Other than that? Perfect. For gifted amateurs and open minded professionals alike. ...
