I headed to the Pipex website at http://www.solo.pipex.net/ where I was able to find out if broadband was available in my area (many exchanges are not broadband ready and you need to make certain that your local exchange is ready.) This was easily done by entering my postcode into the website for confirmation, which it duly provided. The Pipex website is easy to navigate and ... ...than 24 hours after ordering, Pipex confirmed my order via email with all the relevant details in case I'd made an error anywhere.
As it happens, there was a delay in my installation as British Telecom had to remove a line sharing device, but Pipex informed me of this within 24 hours of my initial order being placed.

...and educational institutions use a Pipex address. What's good enough for a company is good enough for me.
In fact, upon revisiting their site to aid me in this review, I notice that they've received 'multiple' awards as an ISP for Business and Residential (see for yourself: http://www.pipex.net/awards).

Pipex have been around for years, they were one of the earliest ISP's in the UK and have always been the most reliable. They don't waste as much money on media coverage as other providers but offer a much better service.
There's no connection charge on residential accounts and they even provide free ADSL equipment (2 free microfilters, an Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem, and data cable). As for the modem itself, the installation was flawless ... ...the underlying network infrastructure.
Pipex allow you to pay monthly, quarterly and anually - allowing you to have your phone and ADSL bills fall on the same week.. The minimum contract is only a month, unlike some other providers, allowing you to sample their service and drop it at any time (or change to a higher or lower speed package).

Pipex Internet LIMITED - 30 Day Trial & General Dissatisfaction - nothing but problems, lies, no return calls, phone is put down on you, taken money even after the contract has ended, no free routers, customer service (joke) advisers have no idea what is going on, they deny a 30 day trial even exists until you say you have it in hard paper form in front of you, they can't even give you a consignment number for your imaginary parcel that has been ... ...since signing up for Pipex business pro broadband. Never choose an ISP because of their price or especially Free Trial!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
As of 18/06/08 - "Pipex Internet LIMITED" have had a total of 15 County Court Judgements made against them between 2006-2008 totalling a massive £11,130 and; only one of them has been satisfied for just £522 back in June 2006! ...I have been a Pipex customer for a year or so now and don’t agree with all the praise that this ISP is getting. I do agree that compared to most other Internet Service Providers it wins hands down for certain aspects like:
• No charges for it’s equipment (modems, cables & microfilters) • No line activation charge
• Good contention ratios • And quite importantly a Customer Services department that doesn’t take an eternity to get through to nor cost ... ...decision to jump on the Pipex bandwagon was the good reviews from websites which graphically show you ISP’s REAL broadband download/upload speed tests and times taken to get through to Customer Service departments compared to other ISP’s. I highly recommend that you check such independent websites out before making your decision. Another factor to consider if you are contemplating going for an ADSL connection is whether or not your telephone line ...

In December last year, my girlfriend decided she wanted to get broadband. Although she was on a Freeserve dial-up package which was doing what it said, we were starting to get into content that warrants broadband. I have a passion for net-based animations such as Weebl & Bob and she was getting into net radio so the choice was made to go there.
We spent around 2 months browsing ... ...it's not sraight forward.
Pipex was chosen as the modem (AlcaTel SpeedTouch 330), filters and set-up cost £17.50 and the monthly fee was £23.44 and possibly the cheapest we had seen for a 512Kbps service.

Pretty straight forward. Done on a Sunday morning so had to wait 48 hours for a confirmation, but to be fair they did state that. The modem turned up on the Thursday, with an activation date of the following Tuesday.

...offer two types of plans, PIPEX Lite and PIPEX Solo. The first type is priced on how many gigabytes you are limited too downloading in a month and comes with a standard 2Mbps connection speed. The second is priced around have no download limits and how fast you want the connection to be ranging from 250Kbps at £14.99 through to 2Mbps as £33.99. At the time, I chose to go for the Solo option for £23.44 (£19.99 inc VAT) giving me download speeds of ... ...that for new customers. PIPEX are upgrading existing customers but more about that later.
Now you may think "but I can get that cheaper" however I have to point out that you do get a lot of extra's for your money. For starters, you get 50Mb of webspace, 12 email boxes, access to thousands of newsgroups and BT broadband services. ...it was a shock when Pipex took over. 1. Customer Service
0870 number - charging 8p per minute just to deal with queries and problems of which there were many, However, this can easily be bypassed by using their reception 0161 number and put through to customer services by the operator.
However, the greatest problem customer service is that, each individual customer service agent seems to have a different solution for a particular problem. For example, ... ...glad to resolve the issue, Pipex never admitted any fault, or problems on their end.
3. Home-move
If you are with Pipex and consider moving home within 12 month contract then DON'T join PIPEX. I have found them extremely deceitful and dishonest. Let me go through the points:
a. I had 12mth contract for line, broadband and calls due to expire in February.
b. Line Rental: they forgot to tell me that you must keep line for 3 months only yet forced ...

I started using pipex broadband 4 months ago and there were problems from the start because at first I could not connect to the Internet for more than a few minutes at a time if I was lucky. Unfortunatly this meant I had to call their customer services, there were fairly long wait times regardless of the time of day you call and once you get through they will do nothing more than give you instructions on how to do an overnight BT line ... ...problem by chance myself.
Pipex use traffic shaping which for those of you that don't know is a technology that limits your broadband speed when using p2p. For somebody that frequently uses this kind of software for legitimate reasons this is very frustrating as it is limited to around 20 kilobytes per second. This is not clearly said in their terms and condition I feel, and secondly I found the section to read the terms and conditions of service ...

When I first heard that Pipex were offering a much cheaper price for ADSL than big companies such as BTopenworld or Freeserve, I was extremely shocked as I had known them since 1996 when I was looking for my first ISP.
I was straight away willing to sign up for their ADSL service as I knew that they were a good company; reliable and reputable because they have been around since 1991, so I see Pipex as Internet Experts and Internet Starters in the ... ...I had my doubts about Pipex ADSL after reading about problems that many people were having with them, but I still signed up anyway.
I bought my modem from www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk which is a great place to buy. I bought a PCI internet modem rather than buying the modem off Pipex, and by doing this I saved about 60 pounds taking into consideration that Pipex are offering a USB modem which are supposed to be more expensive than PCI, but Pipex also ...

...out Nildram, Plusnet, Eclipse and Pipex before settling on Pipex as our new ISP. We wanted peer-to-peer filesharing and a reliable connection, but had no need for email accounts, gaming or a static IP address, so the reported problems with email access were not a worry for us.
PRICING
The main draw to Pipex was their amazing introductory offer on their Solo2Go service which ran until 31st March 2003... £23.44 for activation AND a free modem (the ... ...was promised a refund by Pipex three days ago which has not yet materialised. I don't doubt that I will get it, but still, it's a bit of an annoyance.
The activation itself involves a BT line check, which verifies that your line is close enough to the telephone exchange. This took about 5 working days. I then received an email confirming my activation date three working days later, and my free modem was dispatched.
