I've always fancied the 944, it's got the looks (butcher than the 924, but without the gimpy headlights and ridiculous bottom of the 911), the performance, the fact that it'll go round corners fast without killing you thanks to perfect 50/50 weight distribution, front engine and rear wheel drive. I bought my 944s jusy over a year now and in that time i have not had a single problem. Alot of people will have you believe that these cars can be money pits and tell how they often go wrong and cost a fortune to fix. Myself i fail to see where this view comes from as the car has proved way more reliable than any bmw or vw that ive owned previously and i wouldnt of exactly have called those cars unreliable. Insurance is £200 fully comp on a classic car policy which for a car thats insurance group 20 is pretty good. And as for fuel econommy ive never go below 34mpg my best is 37mpg and thats not driving carefully. I have mixed feelings about this car, but it's not so much the car's fault as it's age, I think. We owned one for 12 months last year and I have to admit it was a monster of a car!! It had a 2.7l petrol engine and did about 15 mpg. There were 2 rear seats if you can call them that but if you had anyone in the front, the back passengers had better be dwarfs, kids or legless! Two years ago I was fortunate to get an '85 944 in lovely condition, with 315,000 km, mostly highway. It had been wonderfully cared for by its stock broker owner, I found leather conditioner in the glove, not a speck of rust, even under-body, only summer driven. I adore driving it and actually prefer it to my newer Audi Quattro, my Toyota Supra and my wife's Prius. It hugs the country roads, has lots of pickup at 160 km/hr and just purs along effortlessly ...
...park it where I can see it often, just for the pleasure. I had to replace the water pump, with the help of an airplane mechanic it took 2 days, complicated but satisfying. I have two problems someone might have suggestions about--I get an exhaust smell in the cabin with the windows down, although I cannot find a leak and the boot is tight; and if I hit a bump at 130 km/hr plus, it comes down unevenly, which I assume means shocks. I drive a Porsche and enjoy every second in it! When I get into my car, I feel I could drive to the edge of the Earth. Only when I see the price of fuel I turn back home!? With all the minor problems I have had with it, I still enjoy driving it. Electrical problems are the biggest thing to watch out for. The battery compartment can corrode and let water onto the fusebox below! When I bought the car, it needed alot of work to bring it back to life. ...
