Advantages: Interesting and well written book Disadvantages: Technically occasionally over my head!
Background:
Another book recommended to me, this time by my Dentist. He raves about this author and as I'm due for a check up next week I thought I better give it a go.
About the author:
Michael Crichton was born in Chicago in USA on 23rd October 1942. He was probably best known as the author of 'Jurassic Park' and the creator of 'ER'.
His first best seller 'The Andromeda Strain' was published while he was still a Medical Student. He has written ... ...books worldwide.
About the book:
Jack Forman is an out of work scientist; he looks after his three children while his wife Julia works. She by contrast has a very successful and high powered job, while Jack struggles to even get interview in Silicon Valley.
Meanwhile in the Nevada Desert, the experiment his wife is in charge of at Xymos Technologies with nanoparticles and Micro robots is going badly wrong. A 'swarm' have escaped from the Laboratory ...

Advantages: Page turning gripping action Disadvantages: Its not a film!
A cluster of biologically engineered nano particles are after you, they are so small they can move like air, getting into the smallest cracks, you are not safe from them. Every minute that goes past is a minute they evolve and become more intelligent which in turn makes them more dangerous. The question is with nowhere to run, how do you get away from them alive? The answer is; you don’t. Jack is a software programmer one of the best, when getting ... ...was having an affair, nobody would hire him, so he became a full time farther & husband. His wife is spending more and more time at work, missing dinners more often, not spending any time with the kids. This is frustrating for Jack; they seem to be growing apart. Advantages: It's a page turner Disadvantages: some academic patches slow the story
The best win I've had with a short story competition involved the tale of a man who was treated with nanobots - tiny machines that could fix his brain at a microscopic level. Here it is if you fancy a quick read:

Michael Crichton also writes about nanotechnology in his novel 'Prey' but in a fuller and much better developed story. It is common in SF novels that the reader is invited to look at the ... ...in terms of its pitfalls. That’s what I did in my story, ‘Has the Moon lost her Memory?’ and that’s exactly what happens in this book.
Many years ago I used to debate with a friend who was an engineer the possibility of AI leading to intelligent, self-acting robots and he dismissed the idea. Also at that time a computer programmer friend assured me that only mainframes were real computers and the PC would only ever be a toy. Of course, technology ...

...stop over the edge action. Prey is no different from others. Essentially, it’s the same story – A bunch of idiots in a huge research company manage to screw up their most advanced technology by not paying enough attention to smaller details, and all hell breaks loose!
<-- The Book -->
As I said above the story can be summed up in just one line I wrote above. However, the settings change for Crichton change. This time around Crichton introduces ... ...lines is actually a BOOK, Prey is more like a SCREENPLAY. And this is easily noticed, when proceedings in the book get more complex and thrilling. <-- Over all -->
Overall, its simply a un-put-down-able book. I finished the entire book in one sitting, and believe me, given Crichton’s characteristic; this one can hold you on till the last page. At the end of the book, I was left thinking about the possibilities about stuff mentioned in the book. ...

Michael Critchon’s novel ‘Prey’ is advertised as an international best seller – I just can’t see why!
I picked this book up for £6.99 in WH Smiths a few weeks back. The only other book I have read from this other is Jurassic Park and being a big fan of the book and having watched the film I promised myself I would read another one of his works!
I have to say I was a little disappointed by ‘Prey’, it was very one dimensional and I found myself guessing ... ...slowed to halt towards the end and predictably the book finished with a happily ever after ending.
Maybe I have been spoilt by the likes of King and Koontz but this book just did make the grade for me!
Based in the Nevada Dessert the book is very well researched and centres on nanotechnology. (Basically, engineering small machines this size of dust particles) It dips into evolution and animal psychology.
The book starts well and it’s a good hundred ...

Advantages: gripping, twists throughout and very thought provoking Disadvantages: once you've started you won't stop
This book is my favourite title by mr crichton, and strangely not his most famous. THE STORY...... a rapidly evolving swarm of nano particles are rogue in the nevada dessert, unknown are there intentions and capabilities - at first, they seem to learn at a mind blowing pace and then become self aware, making them very defensive and highly dangerous. They are miniscule individualy but move in large co-ordinated numbers able to invade the smallest ... ...There creators are a group of scientists who work for a company called XYMOS, the creators have lost control of there project....a big mistake. Now they must contain and destroy, if possible and if they can bring themselves to end the existance of there brain child. There community of genius' need outside help, they see Jack as there best hope, although he knows nothing of there recent work or the rogue agents in the dessert, he had played his part ...

Advantages: A brilliant book after the initial confusingness at begining Disadvantages: takes a good 100 pages to get into...
Michael Chrichton has done it again. Another outstanding book and if you loved other books by him such as the sphere you will certainly love this book too. Those who would especialy enjoy this book would be people who enjoy a bit of action and suspence that can get quite unrealistic at times though even though it is this unrealisticness that makes any book with suspence or action good anyway. However do not be fooled though this isnt just an all action book as it has a lot of substance behind it. A must read for any Michael Chrichton or action ...

Advantages: Technical but easy to follow Disadvantages: Not the best book if you normally read 100 page romance novels!
...is a refreshing read.
Prey is thrilling, it incorporates human emotion with technical advance and encapsulates the reader into warming to an individual character.
He brings into this book the science of nanotechnology, the use of microscopic artificial technology that has the potential to advance industry, the medical community, science and manufacturing. However, as always with great technology comes great cost, in this case it is the lives and ... ...the human population becoming the prey - if I tell you anymore it will spoil the nail bitting fun.
This book is thrilling and gripping through to the end and is an enjoyable read. I love Crichtons style and if you have enjoyed any of his other books you will enjoy this too.

Advantages: Very easy to read, you're dying to know what happens next Disadvantages: Can be quite technical which may be confusing to some readers
A book has to be very gripping before I can get into reading it. I am not a big reader and if I do start a book it tends to take me months to finish it. This one I finished in less than two weeks. This book has the same gripping suspense that was present in the Jurassic Park film (by the same author). You can definately imagine watching a film version of this book. It does in some parts use some scientific information that may be confusing to some ... ...background to understand the technical parts of this book.
You find yourself desparately trying to figure out how it is all going to end and when you get there it is not what you imagined.
Overall this book is a cleverly researched thriller that grips you from the very beginning until the final page. Definately worth buying. ...

Advantages: Gripping, edge of the seat stuff - makes you ponder the possibilities of science Disadvantages: Not good if you're not wanting to have to think about what you're reading
Great intermeshing of scientific theories/research, and a readable (and even potentially believable) storyline. Appeals to both the lover of science/technology and someone who likes a gripping storyline. Speaking as a non-tekky - I had to re-read some of the bits about IT, nanotechnology, and things like clusters, but the story still flows well enough over and above the technical talk - certainly enough to keep you wanting to know what's going to ... ...character is just an everday person (well, sort of), and flawed like we all are. Michael Crichton's name is a review it-self. This writer never lacks imagenation. In this book, he hits where it is not even expected, you live the words nourishing your imagination with not overly detailed discription.
Looking at the width you'll be thinking it will be too long, but dont let it fool you as the words will flow easily in your system (light on the stomach). However, this book is either something you either love or you hate. But from ...
