Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was my introduction to the so called Classics. Having studied a few Dickens at school, I wasn't really that impressed, but a chance purchase of this book changed my mind. A classic romantic novel, Mr Darcy meets Elizabeth Bennett and begins to fall in love. However, she dislikes him, allowing herself to be influenced by how others think of him, and by some out right falsehoods from a friend. The very first line of the book is about marriage and fortune. Doesn't that make it sound so drab and dull? I have to say, i thought so initially. The story is centred around the Bennet family of five unmarried young girls, their frivolous mother and uninvolved father. Through an extremely amusing Elizabeth and her sweet natured sister, Jane , the story you imagine to be of marriage and a mundane life takes a rather surprising twist and the age old saying of 'never judge a book by its cover' looms into view when a handsome gentleman, Mr Darcy is introduced.
