"Circlians and Dreamweavers had always hated each other. Circlians hated Dreamweavers because Dreamweavers didn't worship the gods. Dreamweavers hated the gods because they had killed their leader, Mirar." Sound familiar? In any civilisation on every world the stories play out of the same roots of belief and distrust and misbelief. This world is unnamed…though a map is provided to show the relationships between the main lands of Northern Ithania, Sennon, Southern Ithania and the outlying Dunway, Hania, and Genria to the north, Mur and Dekkar to the south - not to mention the remote isle of ... more

Advantages Advantages Even those not yet into the fantasy genre will love this

Disadvantages Disadvantages The next book isn't out yet...... I can't wait

This is the first book in a new series by Trudi Canavan, who is truly a brilliant fantasy writer. She would also be an excellent introduction to fantasy writing for anyone not yet into this genre. After reading the Black Magician trilogy, I bought this book as soon as it was available and was certainly not disappointed! Once again Trudi Canavan draws you right into the world she creates. Her characters are so well portrayed, so complex, that the reader becomes deeply involved with their lives. I think this is one of her greatest strengths: never before have I felt quite so involved with the ... more

Advantages Advantages Accessible fantasy, gripping from the first page.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to wait another month for the second book!!

I picked this up in the W H Smith at Heathrow airport because I couldn't find anything by my usual authors ( David Gemmill, Raymond E Feist et al). I have to confess I don't always adapt to new authors styles very well but I found this book instantly enthralling. The storyline picks some established fantasy themes and adds some new twists and touches that give it a truly original style. Interesting new races abound and are conjured with an impressive level of detail and depth that fills the imagination of the reader with a world of implied history. You are brought up to speed with this new ... more
