TWO BROKEN SERIES 5s

Advantages: Portable computer
Disadvantages: They seem quite prone to breaking.

I've been a fan of Psion for a long time (at least 6 years). Starting off with a Series 3a I used it all the time and downloaded many great applications from the Internet. After a couple of years Psion brought out the Series 5 which I decided to buy. The unit itself is slightly bigger and more of a boxy shape, but it's still nice and has a soft touch. The applications are similar to others in the range which include word processor, spreadsheet, database, ...
...have more problems with his Psion than me. The first problem was his pen socket. The spring mechanism decided to fail and this appears to be quite common for the Series 5. After having the unit replaced the next problem occurred. His screen looked as though the liquid crystal display had broken. Half the screen was visible and the rest did nothing. We worked out that it was probably the contacts where the hinges on the case are, and that there was ...

My life in a box

Advantages: lots of features, robust design, eavesdropping capabilities
Disadvantages: quite big, you have to get the screen at just the right angle!!

...am talking about my beloved Psion series 5. I have absolutely no idea how I survived BP (Before Psion!!) My life must have been in total dis-array, never being able to find important telephone numbers (you know, the one's that get scrawled across the back of your hand at 2am in some dark club), not to mention remembering everyones birthdays, anniversaries, first snogs etc... Now I am Miss organised!!! I never miss an appointment, never forget ...

Great Stuff

Advantages: Reliable, fun, easy to use, expandable and compatible with many applications.
Disadvantages: Thin rubber coating (purely cosmetic) may peel off in places, stylus may not stay in its holder.

...recently purchased a second hand Psion Series 5 PDA (please note, this review is of the model 'Series 5', the predecessor to the 5mx. They are similar but no the same). It cost me £75 from loot.com and I am very pleased with my purchase. I originally intended it to be a palmtop upon which I could create Word files, databases and spreadsheets on the move. It is actually a lot more sophisticated a machine, despite the fact that it is a few years old ...
...good, reliable operating system called EPOC which is similar to Windows in format. It takes a day or so to get used to, but once you do, you will realise that it is a very practical, customisable, user friendly interface to work with. The great this is that it connects to your PC and transfers and concerts files using he included 'PsiWin' software which must be installed on your PC. The machine has so many functions that it can be used to do almost ...

Serious workhorse

Advantages: Fast, stable, excellent keyboard, excellent built-in software
Disadvantages: Slightly murky screen, slightly dodgy PC synchronisation

The Psion Series 5mx is an ageing machine, but has still got what it takes. The hardware is much the same as the Series 5, although it has 16Mb of RAM and the processor runs at 36MHz. Don't let these puny sounding figures dissuade you from thinking that this is anything other than a portable powerhouse. It retains all the excellent hardware features of the 5, like the incredible keyboard (still the best on any palmtop), voice recorder keys, compact ...
...of the screen has taken a major hike over that of the Series 5, although it still doesn't match that of the Revo. This machine runs an updated version of the EPOC operating system found in the Series 5. There's been some serious optimisation, and the TCP/IP (internet bits :) has undergone major surgery. There are some new applications, which fill the gaps in the original Series 5's suite. The operating system also retains it's legendary stability ...

Useful but not as good as the Psion 3a

Advantages: Excellent software, easy to back up data using software included.
Disadvantages: Construction, weak hinges, coating of the case soon wears off.

I bought my Psion Series 5 after been very satisfied with a 3a which I had owned since 1996. The screen on the Series 5 is not as clear as the 3a, and contrast needs to be adjusted carefully for each programme to get the best view. the backlight feature doesn't really help, and it uses a lot more power. Within a few months the coating on the outside of the case started peeling off, even though I keep the Series 5 in a leather case. The built in ...
...Backing up is easy and the Psion software is easy to use and reliable. Not as well constructed as the 3a, but easier to enter data using the keyboard, and it is also larger and heavier. It does fit into an inside jacket pocket though! ...

Psion Series 5

Advantages: excellent tools for the busy businessman and entrepreneur or for students
Disadvantages: Monochromatic screen

Psion has in its Series 5 of palmtops an excellent range of products. There are basically three different types of Psion Series 5 palmtops (when you exclude the simpler REVOs), the original granite black coloured model, the special edition metallic green one and the more recent 5MX. There are very few differences other than aesthetical from the black to the green model; they share the same hardware specifications although the attractive green special ...
...models are equipped with. Psion palmtops are excellent tools for the busy businessman and entrepreneur or for students who cannot afford a computer. It comes with software within its EPOC operating system - word processing, spreadsheet, agenda, etc. If you own a mobile phone with infrared communication interface you can link up you Psion and surf the web, check email etc. Mind you the screen is monochromatic, so it’s a pretty basic Internet experience. ...

Psion's Masterpiece

Advantages: Good built in software and connectivity
Disadvantages: Slow backups. Lack of colour screen when compared to newer devices

Where can I start? I bought this piece of computing ingenuity at the end of 1999. Initially its smart design and fantastic range of available software suitably impressed me. The word processor is particularly useful if you happen to be on a train and need to continue with an important report, as is the built in diary for keeping reminders. Additional software is quite easy to come by on the Internet with shareware and freeware programs available ...
...on to my next point, which is that of the built in web browser. It is a good idea but because of the slow connection speed you get through a mobile phone and the Psion's own limited processing power things like jpeg images can take a long time to load up, but for looking at text based pages downloading doesn't take too long. On a similar note the E-mail program included is actually surprisingly good. It's extremely handy for keeping in touch with ...

Psion 5mx Your Mobile Best Friend

Advantages: Functionality / Keyboard / battery life / mobile connectivity
Disadvantages: Only the price

...I first bought a Psion PDA when the Series 3 came out. I liked the functionality but not the appalling unreliability, so after about a year I went for a Hewlett Packard HP95 which I carried five days a week for six years without a single fault. Then the Psion Series 5 was released and I found it's combination of Diary / Address Book / Word Processor / Spreadsheets / Memo recorder (plus the best PDA keyboard I'd ever tried) totally irresistible. ...
...converts files created on the Psion to the right format to be opened and used on your PC MS Office programmes. It can also convert files the other way, allowing you to use them on the Psion. The 5mx connects through it's Infra Red (I/R) port to a suitable mobile phone, and the built in Mail is easy to set up to access existing POP3 email accounts. Psion's own Web browser (on the PsiWin CDROM) is OK, but I am currently evaluating Opera's offering ...

I Love My Psion 5

Advantages: Versitility and adaptability
Disadvantages: Price

I love my Psion 5mx. It is small enough to slip into my jacket pocket, yet contains my diary and address book. I can play games on it; plot my next journey and countless other activities. There is also plenty of software available on the Net (e.g. www.toucows.com) including shareware and freeware - you can even download books. I use it in conjunction with an Ericsson SH888 mobile phone to pick up and send emails and surf the web. All word documents ...
...for making verbal notes. The Psion 5mx connects to your PC either via the infrared link, or a Psion to series connector and backing up is easy using the PsiWin software. The software is easy to use, though if you’re used to Windows the commands are not so apparent and I keep on forgetting that you can’t ‘drag and drop’ (Psion people – if you see this that would be a very useful facility). You have to remember to use the ‘menu’ key to access the ...

Psion 5

Advantages: Battery-Life, Excellent Keyboard, Fast & simple software.
Disadvantages: Dimly lit screen, Size & Weight, Covering

The Psion 5 is getting a little long in the tooth now, but you'll find second hand versions croping up all over the place on auction sites. This is how I came by mine. Detractors my point at the bulkiness on the Psion 5, or it's lack of features such as colour screens, high-resolution, decent sound, etc. But really, they're missing the point. The Psion 5 is a reliable and more importantly USEABLE work-horse. The keyboard really is fantastic and ...
...does make my poor little Psion look a little battered. Be careful if you're buying second hand. I frequently use my Psion to synch with my Nokia 7110 (via the infra-red port and Phoneman shareware software) and it's ability to connect with my pc is fine, though it's a pity that it uses the serial port and not the usb port. Backing up and installing new software from your pc is as easy as pie. If you want cutting edge technology in a small package, ...

Best 20 quid ever spent.

Advantages: Easy to use quality handheld computer.
Disadvantages: Short battery life so get a power unit.

...I bought my fully working Psion 5 for a ridiculous £20 from a bloke at work who had had it for years and never really used it. Just think of what £20 gets you these days. 8 pints of beer, a taxi ride of about 30 miles, half a pair of jeans, or one training shoe. I've owned my £20 Psion Series 5 for about a month, and quite frankly I don't know how I've survived this long without one. FEATURES OF MY PSION: PC CONNECTIBLE - With the PsiWin software ...

great function but breaks easily

Advantages: Great features
Disadvantages: web browser is pretty bad, not super reliable

i have had my psion for 12 months and i love the functionality like email, a spreadsheet, word, database, calendar and global time - all of which I used constantly whilst on the road. Battery time was also excellent and the ease with which it interacted with my Siemens S25 mobile phone was great. Psion 5mx - excellent design.

Advantages: a good package, good design
Disadvantages: slightly too big

I own a series 5mx and I find it ideal for everyday use. With practice I can touchtype on the keyboard even though it is tiny and I have huge fingers. The keyboard folds out to give a much bigger area than first seems practical. With the pointer-stick it is easy to control the interface and select text. Personally, I find the battery life OK and, with an memory pack added, it is more powerful than the desktop I had two years ago. I have used the ...
...bit flaky to me. I haven't tried running Java on it yet - watch this space - but I have watched AVIs. A great mobile, possibly a bit big. Update: mine has just died because it can no longer see its C drive (ie its main memory) and I cannot restore the backup because no software will load. I think its about 15 months old. ...

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Some time ago I arranged for 8 of these to be purchased for the company I worked with. I had to test one when they arrived before handing them out and really didn't want to part with it. The software included, though not WIN compliant, will synch very well with Office apps via the synch app. Data can be transferred easily from A -> B with the IR ports which are a blessing in meetings and the touch-screen is excellent. Truly versatile

Advantages: EPOC beats CE / Pocket PC hands down
Disadvantages: None

The 5MX is a fabulous piece of kit - the EPOC o/s is first rate - with no load up hassles. It's intuitive and so eay to use - I'd be lost without it. As a PDA it performs effortlessly but it is certainly more than just an organiser or PDA - for me as a sales manager it has transformed the remote office completely - I can now use it for all meetings without recourse to paper and pen - I don't need to lug my laptop around - unless for specific demos ...
