Advantages Advantages Quality keyboard, power economy, memory capacity

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of any!

I bought a Psion MX5 last year to use mainly as a travel diary. I chose the MX5 above other handheld computers for the following reasons: keyboard: as I would be using it to record travel experiences I wanted the convenience of a keyboard, rather than an "on-screen" virtual keyboard as in the Palm handhelds memory: it has 16MB of memory, enough to hold loads of documents as well as a big database of names and addresses etc batteries: the MX5 runs on two HP7-size batteries which seem to last ages! - very economical It is easy to use and has the usual features of word processing, spreadsheets ... more

Advantages Advantages Loads of software, does everything, best PDA keyboard ever

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit fragile

Take these opinions as valid for the 5MX too, it's about the same. This machine is one of the best things I've ever owned, it's been so useful. I can type stuff on it, organise my life, sort out finances, keep databases, access the internet, record sounds, draw sketches, play games and more. It's compatible with my mobile phone so I have the perfect solution to portable e-mail access and with the Spectrum emulator, I have a library of thousands of games at my disposal for those long, boring trips. When you buy this device, it seems a little dull. Only the basic office suite is loaded in, with ... more

    Advantages Advantages Programmable, incredibly versatile

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite big, heavy on the batteries.

I've been using Psion palmtops since 1997 and have previously owned a Series 3c and a Series 5. In the PDA market, Psion offer the most flexible and versatile hardware solution -- the trade-off being that they are the largest PDAs around and subsequently the least portable! The 5mx has a 16mb RAM memory, which is one of the biggest memories of any PDA of its size and weight. I use the machine for pretty much everything, indeed it's possible to become over-dependent on the things when they have your diary, your phonebook, your emails, databases and maps and Tetris (!) on them. It uses two AA ... more

Advantages Advantages third party software available, keyboard

    Disadvantages Disadvantages discontinued line

When the series 5 was launched in 1997, it was hailed as the most powerful, functional and practical PDA available. It held this position at the top of the market for several years, even ahead of newer windows CE based handhelds. With its full keyboard, VGA width screen, compatability with Microsoft office and long battery life, it had the capability to perform most of the functions of a fullsize laptop, but at a fraction of the price and size. Then, as other manufacturers brought out newer versions of their PDAs, Psion followed suit with an improved version of the series 5, the series 5MX ... more

Advantages Advantages full keyboard unlike most PDAs

    Disadvantages Disadvantages no colour screen

Too big, too bulky, too little features, slow connectivity via mobile phones... NOT at all. This is probably the best PDA on the market for its size. Just the last week I was sitting on a train writing a report using word and changing my excel file with not all the functions of a laptop but it does get very close considering the size - big wallet size. This little baby is excellent - not only does it allow connectivity to your pc quickly and allows you to back things up on your PC hard drive such as documents, emails etc. The email was a little tricky configuring so that I could use it and I ... more

Advantages Advantages Instant on, Touch sensitive screen, good features

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite bulky to lug around all the time

Psion started off this whole PDA thing back in the 80s, and is still in front, I think. The 5mx has an excellent touch sensitive screen, which basically acts like a mouse. It also has instant on, so when you turn the 5mx on, you can use it immediately. Also, you can set it to turn on when you open it, or even just touch the screen. The 5mx is kind of unique in its sector inasmuch as you can record stuff on it. So therefore, if you are having a meeting/conference, you can record what goes on, and make detailed notes later. That is a most useful function. The password feature enables a password ... more

Advantages Advantages Size, Speed, Battery life of 25 hours on 2xAAs

Disadvantages Disadvantages screen contrast occasionlly unclear

The Psion 5mx is a small stylish handheld computer/PDA. In a sleek silver grey case, it has a unique fold out keyboard. The PDA comes in at easily a 1/4 the size of a slim notebook PC, and despite its compact nature it is very easy to get to a good typists speed. It comes bundled with a web browser, email client, agenda, addressbook, word processor, spreadsheet and database. It is easy to add software by connecting it to a PC with PsiWin software. I have personally tested its mobile connectivity with a Nokia 7110 via infra red to surf the web and read email from the bus, train or pub. Perfect ... more

Advantages Advantages Great keyboard, great repair centre, large screen

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as sexy as the Handspring or Palm

It's always a risk buying a PDA. You never know exactly how much you'll use it until you've had it for at least six months. But I bought my Series 5 (original, not MX) two years ago and I still love it. USAGE As a journalist, I use it as my contacts book and for word processing. The keyboard works well. Unlike the Revo, you don't need to have pencil thin fingers to type on it. I've found I can almost type as quickly as on a regular keyboard. It makes an excellent poor mans lap top. BREAKAGE Last year I managed to smash the screen. Thankfully, Psion repaired it for £100. In fact they actually ... more

    Advantages Advantages Power

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the cheapest

I'm been a proud owner of my Psion 5MX for nearly a year now. It is quite amazing what it can do. Not only does it have a spreadsheet and a word processor as well as a telephone book as you would expect. It also has Internet access with a mobile phone or modem. The down side is that the Internet access can be quite costly as the modem is an optional extra. I bought my 5MX following a 3a, a big step up and it was pretty amazing to see the differences. I have found the touch sensitive screen very easy to navigate with. Slightly larger than the pocket (and a bit too heavy also), I would say this ... more

Advantages Advantages Powerful, Versatile Excellent Keyboard

Disadvantages Disadvantages Screen is almost unreadable in sunlight

I received my Psion5 as a gift - fortunately as I would never have spent nearly £500 at the time. However it has become indespensible,I use it daily. The "Word" inbuilt program is very similar in look & feel to the MS Version, as is its "Sheet" program with Excel. It is very customiseable and still maintains a strong freeware, shareware & commercial support base. I've always used it in a business sense and soon found that I was transferring my most used documents to the Psion format and carrying them with me where-ever I went. Coupled to a mobile phone I had a complete mobile office in my ... more
