    Advantages Advantages Easy to read.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive.

Psychologies Magazine stood out for me on a recent shopping trip in Tesco. It was placed on a stand to immediately catch my eye, placed higher than the other glossy mags, and had a bold red title. Aha! The psychology behind the positioning of the mag made me buy it! I was nearly put off by the price of £3.00, however, it was a new magazine to me so I thought I'd take a look. I'm usually put off somewhat by a glossy mag full of ads or pointless fashion pages, and this looked a little 'wordier' so I reckoned it would be better value for money. Indeed, the magazine's pull-in line as shown on ... more

    Advantages Advantages Glossy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Amateurish Writing

I bought Psychologies magazine because I'm just into psychology and am at the moment considering whether or not to study it at university next year. It also allows me to wallow in my favourite subject - me. What you get, however, is this, unfortunately: Cosmo with a pair of specs and a bun. It is blatantly focussed on women - I don't mind that, I am a woman after all. But frankly there is nothing in there that I haven't seen in your better editions of Cosmo. Looking at the March 2006 edition's contents we have them asking Joely Richardson if she had a happy childhood and what her relationship ... more

Advantages Advantages Some interesting stuff covered and good journalism

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some weak articles and repetition

I subscribed to this after getting one edition free with Red Magazine, who are Psychologies' stable mate. I subscribed for a year or so, but I no longer subscribe. I still occasionally buy it, but I found an edition every month was a little too much navel-gazing for me, to the point where it could end up being a bit of a downer... and I knew that with a new baby I'd be unlikely to have the time to read as many magazines as I previously have. It has had some really good articles over the months, including pull-out sections on careers and personal development. For me, the biggest disappointment ... more

Advantages Advantages Something very different in the glossies market.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit pricey.

I bought this magazine two days ago, and have read it cover to cover. As I never do that with any magazine these days, it says something to start with. Although it looks much like your standard glossy mag, I was surprised and impressed by the content. It does seem to be genuinely offering something more thoughtful and varied. It begins with some fairly standard magazine features - readers letters, problems, news pages, celebrity interview etc. But once you get into the main features it's great, and quite different. Some examples from this issues include: The Orphaned Adult - how we change when ... more

    Advantages Advantages Interesting read

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit pricey

I found this magazine a good hybrid between a psychology textbook and a fashion type magazine the likes of Glamour, Cosmopolitan etc. The magazine brings psychology into a new light, rather than being a lot of neurones or even a patranoising self help book instead the magazine gives good simple advice on issues such as stress, assertiveness, self image etc. It still contains the usual celebrity features, however has them talking about more than just hair and make up. One article I found incredibly useful was one on relaxing using the five senses, although it may sound simple, it gave good ... more

Advantages Advantages Covers a variety of areas and is different from normal women's magazines

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not to everyones taste

I have a monthly subscription of Psychologies and really enjoy reading each magazine. I find general women's magazines full of adverts and information on celebrities, fashion and make-up which is not really me. Until Psychologies started there were no magazines that I enjoyed reading. It costs £3.30 and can be purchased at most newsagents and supermarkets in the normal large format or the smaller format which is great for carrying around on the train etc. Regular features include letters from readers, questions, review of books (both fiction & non fiction), review of films and music and a ... more

Advantages Advantages It had quite a good book & movie recommendations list

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything

I'm currently doing a degree in psychology and sociology, so I picked up this magazine as I've heard people discussing it before and thought it might be helpful to me for my course. Well, I was wrong. It's just like all the other women's magazines but disguised in a topic about psychology, which I believe is very misleading. It barely scrapes the surface of psychology. The advertisements are disgraceful, sending mixed messages and promoting an unhealthy self-esteem in the real women of society. For a magazine that attempts to come under the topic of 'psychology', this was a fatal mistake. The ... more
