RAC saved Rex!

AdvantagesGreat Service

DisadvantagesNone for me

"...I received 3 years free RAC cover with the deal. Fantastic. Fast forward 5 years and I have only ever used their service once, something I would consider to be a good thing. However, my one single experience was a very positive one and I am now with them as a loyal member in my new car also. I thought I would share my experience to show the level of service that I received. My Experience -------------------- As I said, my level of cover ..." Read review

Knights in bright orange.

AdvantagesThey do all the mucky stuff for you!

DisadvantagesIf you aren't a priority case customer (i.e. pregnant / stranded), you may have to wait longer.

"...at 1pm, the bright orange RAC van appeared and I literally skipped to the door. . . I'd barely explained the problem to the guy when he was popping the bonnet and connecting a portable battery charger to my car. He then looked at me, said "Totally flat battery. You left your internal car light on". "Argh" said I. "Y'know, I had a niggly voice saying ‘battery, battery’ to me, but I ignored it". He looked at me with a combination of understanding ..." Better than the AA and cheaper than the police

AdvantagesQuick, efficient and very professional

Disadvantagescan be a few delays during holiday times

"...have had to use the RAC a few times… mainly when I had to drive a Vauxhall Vectra for a short time… Every one knows what the RAC are about so I simply wanted to give you a members experience of why I rate them as a recovery company… I joined using the Roadside assistance together with the 'At home' service, which means that wherever a break down they will come to my rescue… My first experience was when I had just passed my test and was driving ..." RAC: A Mixed Experience

AdvantagesSwift response, excellent staff attitude

DisadvantagesInconsistent level of proficiency among staff

"The RAC - a motoring institution, and one I have had a good deal of experience with, despite my tender age, and the fact I've only been driving for five years. Of necessity, this is a lengthy review. This is largely a review of the RAC's breakdown service, including: Introduction Calling the RAC - the mechanics of it Experiences: The M1: running out of petrol Experiences: The A14: Failing electrics Experiences: Services on the M4: Corroded ..." They RACe to your help! Review with images

AdvantagesExcellent Service, Fairly Priced, Fast Response

DisadvantagesNone I Think!

"I originally took out RAC cover back in September in 1999; the reason for this was that my car was getting fairly old and not as reliable as it once was. I had stopped in a motorway service station and was approached by one of the salesman. You know the ones, the annoying ones that approach you on the way in and on the way out with the same question. All I had to pay was £30 then and the rest by direct debit over 3 months, easy enough so I took out ..." Read review

Ha Ha, you pillock

AdvantagesWere quick for me and cheap

DisadvantagesThey like other companies will try to con you

"...3 major ones really, AA, RAC and Greenflag, and as green flag don’t seem to like young drivers, from what I’ve figured out, it narrows the choice down even further for us younger drivers. I’ve heard good and bad stories for both AA and RAC, so it really is pot luck as to which will give you the better service. It depends on your location, your car, your sex (females get served better with breakdown services, it’s a well ..." Read review

Stakes and Madders

AdvantagesHome Jeeves!

DisadvantagesTo the Orange Van!

"...break down, a woman rings RAC on her Mobile, and they’re rescued in about an hour and home for supper. No-one got wet. Becoming a member of the RAC is joyously easy. Go over to www.rac.co.uk, or simply stop at any motorway service station, day or night, and speak to the man outside. Not the one smoking. The one with the clipboard in orange. The most challenging thing about the membership is deciding what sort of member you want to be. There ..." Read review

Planning for your own funeral

AdvantagesGood standard of service from uniformed patrols

DisadvantagesSmaller competitors cheaper

"...used to work for the RAC some years ago – although as a Network Support Engineer, rather than a patrol. This will explain how I know about the workings inside the RAC; I leave it to you to decide if that experience has swayed my opinion here. The RAC operates a national breakdown service with their own, uniformed, roadside patrols. They are the second largest organisation after the AA. They have pretty much the same range of options as the others; ..." Read review

Courteous Reliability For Auto-Inconveniences

AdvantagesLone-female friendly, reliable, helpful

DisadvantagesCan be slow at busy periods ie bankhols

"...it’s a bit extravagant having RAC cover isn’t it?’ muttered my mum who had only passed her test two years before I did, and at the time was still sharing my dad’s car, as I had been before moving away from home and suddenly finding I needed my own wheels more than ever. ‘Well, peace of mind and all that.’ I answered. Besides, the guy at the motorway services looked so forlorn and damp in the lousy, wet, Welsh weather, ..." Read review

Sorry Sir

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesExpensive and unreliable

"...have been members of the RAC for the past two years - the first year we paid direct debit and we made use of the service about 5 times without any problems what so ever....they managed to get the car picked up after an accident even before the police arrived! So we had moved and unfortunately forgotten our breakdown cover was up for renewal - ahhh the clutch clip went - and on xantias they can not be mended by the RAC or any others for that matter....Ahh ..." Free Cover I Can Do Without

Advantagesnone

Disadvantagessee op

"...That’s before I called the RAC though. ~~~ Free Cover ~~~ I'm with the RAC because the cover came free for a year when I purchased a new car. I have often relied on breakdown recovery services to get me out of trouble and as I already mentioned I have always got excellent service. I did however think it was an unnecessary expense to pay for cover when I had this free RAC cover. Boy was I wrong. ~~~ The Breakdown ~~~ Last week I was ..." Read review

Are they as quick as they say they are

AdvantagesGo money back

DisadvantagesHad to Pay £105.00 and time I was stranded

"...was a member of the RAC it was time to call them out. I rang from my mobile phone and was put in a queue. This went on for 20 mins, my friend suggested we walk to the emergencey phone box and call them from there. I thought it was a good idea so we went. It was about 300 Yards down so we got there and picked up the receiver. No answer by Rac so I spoke to the police and after taking all details they were going to fax RAC to come out. We walked ..." We'll RAC to it...when we get there...or will we

AdvantagesCan be invaluable

Disadvantageswaiting is a pain and can be frightening

"Before I got married, every Saturday Andrew or I would make the 70 or so mile trip around the M25 to the home of the other. It was one of those unique M25 journeys where it matters not whether you go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the road. Going clockwise for me meant going through the Dartford Crossing at the cost of £1, and anti-clockwise meant driving another 4 or so miles (the reverse for Andrew) so really nothing in it although I usually ..." Stranded on the hard shoulder dying for a pee

AdvantagesIt's better to be covered than not (hence my putting 'yes' in the recommend box

DisadvantagesBut that doesn't mean you can expect SERVICE

"...having to call out the RAC to do this for me. However, they are a service which I have paid for and I do think that I could expect: My telephone call to be answered pretty quickly An operator to call me back if s/he knows that the call will take a good quarter of an hour An operator who is able to vaguely pinpoint my location by me telling him that I’m on the M74, approximately 30 miles south of Glasgow, heading North, and PARKED ..." Stranded in a Storm

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesTend to leave folk stranded

"...own mind up about the RAC from my experience and from other good Ops here on Ciao.. ~~~0o0o0~~~ A few years ago, whilst driving overnight from Carlisle to London, I encountered a most dreadful storm, I was on my own on the southbound carriageway just North of Kendal when I came across the most horrific storm, thunder, lightening, torretnial rain, and yes you guessed it ...my car cut out, I managed to get to the hard shoulder, and although angry ..."
