Advantages Advantages A funny and easy read

Disadvantages Disadvantages I wanted more of Archer Cross

About the book Hex Hall is the first book in the series of the same name by debut author, Rachel Hawkins. It was released in the UK on 1st April 2010 by Simon and Schuster Children’s and it is 336 pages long. Plot Sophie Mercer is a teenage witch, even if she isn’t a very good one. After a love spell gone terribly wrong after trying to help out a fellow classmate, Sophie finds herself in big trouble. Advantages Advantages very funny

Disadvantages Disadvantages the complete lapse in character put me off a bit

Sophie is a witch, coming into her powers at twelve meant changing schools after every ‘incident’ she had. So after accidently casting a love spell that turned out to be so strong the guy nearly killed herself to get to the girl he’d been made to fall for, it’s not unusual that Sophie has to change schools again. However this time, her new school is more like a prison and it’s full of people just like her. Sentenced to education at Hex Hall, a special school for Prodigium (the “fancy Latin word for monsters”), by the Council, Sophie finds that her fellow witches, warlocks, shape shifters and ... more

Advantages Advantages A fun read with a different take on female friendship, no easy answers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly stereotyped romantic subplot, cliffhanger ending

Sophie Mercer has been sent to a boarding school for monsters after a little love spell goes horribly wrong. Hecate Hall has been set up “to protect and instruct shapeshifter, witch and fae children who have risked exposure of their abilities”. As in any good school story, she soon makes new friends and enemies. Her room mate is a 15 year old vampire with an obsession with everything pink, and Sophie must struggle to hide her disgust at Jenna’s blood consumption, as they quickly become good friends. She faces more difficulty with a trio of glamorous witches. Anna, Chaston and Elodie hate Jenna ... more

Advantages Advantages Mysterious and enjoyable read

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cliffhanger at the end!

Hex Hall was far from disappointing. I mean it. After reading a few reviews I wasn't that impressed, so I thought I'd read this as a challenge, to see how I would cope if I had to give it a bad review. I'm embarrassed that I didn't read more reviews of this, because it is definitely my type of book! Sophie Mercer is a (half-breed) witch who is shoved slap-bang in the middle of Hecate 'Hex' Hall - a boarding school for magical 'creatures'. She's tormented by the admired, and attractive (but bitchy) witches, and as usual, the 'leader' just happens to be going out with the (most) handsome warlock ... more
