Advantages Advantages Good selection of titles:skilfully condensed.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cancelling...as you probably know.

You have probably heard the quip: “The person who said that nothing is impossible has obviously never tried to cancel a Readers’ Digest subscription!”And it is true that once you have made a purchase from Readers’ Digest, they cling tighter than a leech on a septic wound. But hold on…I’m about to say something nice about them! I have for some time now been subscribing to the Readers’ Digest Condensed Books and I have to say, hand on heart, that I have enjoyed every volume so far. The titles chosen for this series are varied enough for there to be ... more

Advantages Advantages Great for a journey

Disadvantages Disadvantages None unless you subscribe

It is years since the last time that I bought a Reader’s Digest, but it is nice to see that the book is still as popular as ever. This is a book that can be bought just about anywhere in the world and is produced in around 50 different editions and in about 20 languages, with a claim of around 30 million copies sold each month. At just under 14 cms wide by 19 cms long and with just under 200 pages the Reader’s Digest is truly a pocket edition although Reader’s Digest prefers to call it a magazine. Readers can take out a subscription to Reader’s Digest which is obviously ... more

    Advantages Advantages prizes

    Disadvantages Disadvantages poor service

Do you subscribe to readers digest? If you do read no further. If however, you are one of the very few who has entry into the next round of their prize draw, then beware. I am always one of the very few in my county to be lucky enough to be sent draw tickets for entry into the next stage. As I won a £10 cheque a few years ago for returning a NO envelope to 'Which' magazine, I now return all the readers digest stuff in a NO envelope. This week I had a parcel delivered. Guess what it was, yes, it was a dictionary type book from readers digest, and was sent to me after I had stated NO. I was on ... more

Advantages Advantages Great read, Compact, Variety of subjects

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

The Reader's Digest monthly magazine costs £2.50 per month if bought from a newsagents. A few years ago I actually subscribed for a year and saved about 30%. I think this magazine is an excellent buy as it has many different articles for everyone's taste. It must be good because it boasts some 25 million copies issued in 19 different languages (July 2001 edition refers). At the front is a list of contents for that month's issue. These are based both on fiction & non-fiction. One of my favourite parts of every issue is the "Word Power" page. What this section does is identifies 20 different ... more

Advantages Advantages Interesting wide variety of reading. Puzzles etc.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Depends on whether you want to try and win some money.

I have been a member of Readers Digest for some years now so it should be obvious that I find it very readable. Having it delivered every month is very convenient and I can honestly say I actually look forward to it. I also get it at a discounted price which can`t be bad can it. CONTENT So much and so varied which means it should be suitable for a wide variety of tastes so lets break it down. First of all and this should be of interest to CIAO members. YOU CAN EARN MONEY By sending in articles for publication and you don`t have to write a book to do so. TAKE LIFES LIKE THAT This asks you to ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent quality - both magazine and books

Disadvantages Disadvantages Once they have your name on their list, they will NOT let you go. They are like leeches. You will get so much junk mail, you won't know what to do with it all

I have always enjoyed reading Reader's Digest - they have a lot of interesting articles, a condensed story, plus numerous areas of jokes, wordpower, etc where people can actually submit and earn some money from. Reader's Digest is actually a pretty good payer if you are lucky enough to get something you have written, into their pages. My problem with them is .... once they have your name - they will not let you go! They will bombard you with junk mail for every book they ever publish, for their sweepstakes, and their condensed books series. It gets to being so annoying, and for the amount they ... more

    Advantages Advantages comprehensive and accessible

    Disadvantages Disadvantages rather dated

a few years ago I'd have been raving about this book. It certainly still has much to commend it. It has a wealth of information and, for those who like such things (I do!) a lot of technical detail. It's written in a way which is highly informative, but generally managed to avoid being patronising - which is a major drawback of much of this genre. The problem is that it doesn't appear to have been updated in recent years. I would certainly have expected, for example, to see an evaluation of the various on-line sources of medical information around. The illustrations also look rather 1970s ... more

Advantages Advantages Great content, excellent articles, honest reporting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit too US centric, blind to American misadventures

I grew up with Readers Digest, as a kid, from the 70's, through the 80's, 90's and even now. To date, there have been many magazines, that have been in and out of my list, but Reader's Digest is always there. Hell, i can never even think of ditching this magazine. All our India Todays, Outlooks,Weeks which are think attracting more people means dumbing down the content, please read the Readers Digest. It proves that to get more readers to your magazine you need not insult their intelligence. You wont find articles about Page 3 stars, or rich bored kids, or the lifestyles of the rich and famous ... more
