Advantages Advantages Fairly quick and easy to make.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of pans to wash up after.

My husband hates fish, but knows he needs to eat more of it, and cut down on red meat. In an attempt to get him to eat more, I am trying to dress it up in as many healthy ways as possible, especially on a low carb diet (no potatoes, pasta or any fun stuff like that). I am rather bored of fish baked with tomatoes, so decided to try a lazy version of fish pie. I kind of made it up as I went so I can't give exact quantities. Basically, steam about three handfuls of fresh baby leaf spinach (frozen will work too but I only had fresh) according to the cooking instructions. Chop up and put in the ... more

Advantages Advantages Tasty, you can control what is going in it

Disadvantages Disadvantages Time taken and mess it makes!

Cottage Pie After much deliberation, I've decided to share my cottage pie recipe. My husband loves this dish (they do say the way to a mans heart is through his stomach!) and it is what I usually cook when we have friends over. I will confess to being a lazy cook and I hate peeling and mashing potatoes so I don't make it very often. It's not the healthiest either, with cheese, butter and flour, so it's probably best not to have it too often. However, I think this also helps, as it feels like a special treat when I do cook it, so I can ask for anything I like and he finds it impossible to ... more

Advantages Advantages Hearty, warming casseroles, posh enough for a dinner party.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Buying your oven was a waste of money.

The nights are getting darker and there's a definite chill in the air. Salads don't seem half so appealing and there are times when what I really want is a good, old-fashioned casserole. I've got a couple that are posh enough to serve if you've got guests and there's one of them that will delight both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. We'll start with one that makes a regular appearance on the Magee dining table over the winter months and that's my sausage and mushroom casserole. It's important to use the best quality sausages that you can buy as the cheaper ones are too fatty and this spoils ... more

... and Deano after his latest opinion!! I thought I would lend the lads a hand and teach them how to cook, seeing as most of them need to make up for some reason or another (i.e. Lush opinions) and the way to a girl's heart is through her tummy. Actually it's not, it's through the high street to the jewellers but I digress... So, what follows is the Dickhead's Guide to cooking and the easiest place to start has to be with an old fashioned Sunday dinner, don't panic boys this recipe even my dog can follow. OK, so a roast is a roast right? Sort of, I usually find a different way of doing things ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick, easy and very very cheap to make!

Disadvantages Disadvantages none. It tastes just wonderful!

I learnt this recipe from a girl in college who ended up being my best friend, and we still reminisce about those lovely dinners! She learnt it from the italian grandmother of the children she was nanny to in a house in Milan the year before we met, and she;d spent the year since she had been shown the recipe perfecting the recipe. So by the time I came to learn it from Emm, there wasn't much tweeking to be done, so this is the recipe in its pure, unadulterated form. I hope you enjoy making and eating it! This recipe is for a pasta dish that can be thrown together in about ten minutes, or ... more

Advantages Advantages It tastes good and is filling.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not so good if you're on a fat free diet.

This is one of the tastiest Italian type ways I know of to cook chicken. It can be quite heavy, what with the cream and butter, but it's great for a special meal and is very satisfying as a main course. Vegetarians could substitute Quorn or Tofu for the Chicken but the sauce is absolutely gorgeous just on it's own. All the alcohol will evaporate so it's just the taste of the wine that enhances the flavour of the meat or quorn. Utensils A Sharp Knife to slice the mushrooms. A Frying Pan to cook the dish. A Spoon or Spatula to turn and serve the chicken and stir the mushrooms. Ingredients 1 ... more

Advantages Advantages They're not Christmas Dinner, and they're not roasts

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to cook them, or blag someone into doing it for you.

With Christmas nearly on us, and a season of excess gathering pace hour-by-hour, I thought it only right and proper that I offer you some respite from the ubiquitous bird, the repetitive roast, the yawnful Yorkshire (Do they do that Yorkshire pudding thing at Christmas? Dunno) and the seasonal soggy sprouts. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not slagging off the traditional meal one bit! Nor am I casting aspersions on the culinary skills of: 1. You 2. Your spouse 3. Your Mother 4. Your favourite restaurant chef. (Delete as applicable) Not at all…would I be so harsh? What I am offering is a little ... more

Advantages Advantages tasty, filling, a doddle to make

    Disadvantages Disadvantages easy to overindulge

The logs are crackling in the fire, our dog is snoozing in front of the hearth after a long walk by the canal and my pot roast is in the oven; while it’s cooking, I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to share with you a couple of my favourite home-cooked meals at this time of year. Mattygroves, and anyone else out there who hates washing up (that’ll be all of you then?) and is attracted by the notion of one pot cooking, should like these. The amounts below feed 4 adults, with enough left over to treat the dog who always loves us best when we sit down at the kitchen table. ~ Simple ... more

Advantages Advantages quick and easy to make, versatile, ingredients not too expensive

Disadvantages Disadvantages i am a terrible cook

I cannot cook so it is a surprise to me that I actually have something to write in this category! However, recently I have made some feeble attempts at cooking either by just throwing things from the cupboard into a pan and hoping for the best or by looking at recipes online. I am quite lazy and cooking is not something I find particularly interesting or enjoyable, but one day I woke up infront of the television and found that I was watching Jamie Olivers "pass it on" cooking show. Just as I was about to turn over I saw a finished dish that looked like something I would actually enjoy!!! I am ... more

Advantages Advantages bit healthier then normal, tastes great, easy to make, veg version suitable for vegans

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

This is a really simple recipe for a slightly healthier/dairy free tikka masala. I know some people are put off by the words 'Dairy free' in a recipe title but trust me this is lovely and it doesn't use any soya milk/cream so if you don't like soya products then you will love this. Also as it doesn't use any cream it is great for vegetarians/vegans if you just use veg instead of meat. It is a recipe I stole from my mum and then added a bit of extra spice to. My partner loves it as he is lactose intolerant and had never had a creamy curry before and I like it because it creates a really rich ... more
