...came across a P-reg red Renault Megane 1.4 with power steering, electric front windows and an electric sunroof. We bought it pretty much on the spot, trading in the Nissan (which really WAS quite poorly by now) and paying just under £6,000 (ok, we broke the budget, but hey).

There is an engine immobiliser, and the type of central locking that allows you to press a button to open the car – I like that bit! In fact the immobiliser is connected to the pressy-button thingy, so you can’t start the car if you’ve opened the doors the traditional way – with the key.

I purchased a Renault Megane Hatch last year in August 2002, it was my first car as i had previously had motor bikes.
Due to only being 21 and it being my first car + knowing that the model i wanted was the Dynamique i decided to check a few insurance quotes to see if i could stretch to the 1.6 model or whether i would be limited to the 1.4.

Advantages: Relatively cheap to buy, reasonable looking, good space, solidly screwed together Disadvantages: Utterly lacking in performance, main dealer service, started to become unreliable after 30k
My wife bought our Renault Megane in 1999 to replace a very dog eared Vauxhall Nova that she had driven for years.
We both liked the look of the Megane and I had read some relatively good magazine reviews about the car so we hot footed it to the local main dealer to part ex the Nova.

We bought the poverty spec model as I have driven various French cars in the past and the abundance of electrical gadgets nearly always eventually fail or get water damaged (I speak from experience - Citroen ZX, Renault 25 GLX (!) Peugeot 307, I had trouble with all of them)
As it was my wife's car, I had let her test drive it ...

If you have a young family, or are planning to start a family, this car is ideal. For the youngest passenger, the ISOFIX system offers the safest possible car seat fitting. No more worries about the harness being correct (which 80% of us regularly get wrong!). In addition to the usual airbags, there are curtain airbags to provide protection from side impact - contributing to the 5 star safety rating. For front seat children, airbags can be deactivated ... ...legs can not only pull the seat forward, but can also adjust the seat height to make peering over the bonnet a thing of the past. ...Vauxhalls until I chose the Renault Megane- and I chose this based on the spec and the price. I was looking to do a personal lease , and At the time I chose it, it was very competitively priced compared with other similar sized cars offering a similar specification. Although when I fist wrote this opinion I was fairly happy with their service I am now having mixed thoughts. Servicing has been fine. Advantages: Large boot, 5 doors, good petrol consumption Disadvantages: It's a Renault
I bought one of these a year ago from Reg Vardy for £6999, sand the car was 8 months old with 11'500 miles on the clock. It is a nice looking car in my opinion but for £7000, it was far cheaper than any other car in it's class. This car can be summed up as being practical. It's not quick, nor is it extremely comfortable, although it's quite good against it's competitors. The best thing is the fuel consumption at 42.6 mpg which is relatively high. ... ...something of major importance. The car can easily seat five people and there's a hefty boot space also, again practical. It's a good motorway car and it can easily hold speed at 90+ mph. With power steering, it's easy to drive and the gear change in my opinion is good. Having done 20000 miles over the year, I've still not had a problem and this surprises me because it is a Renauly afterall. Nevertheless, I can't complain if it's started every morning ...

Advantages: good ride, safety Disadvantages: loses value quickly
The Renault Megane replaced the 19 saloon and hatch in 1996. Both the saloon and hatchback ranked close to the top of their class for interior space, ride, refinement and value. The Megane is roomy, has a good-looking interior, an enormous boot (although I knew of several meganes where the boot refused to open!) and decent spec. Handling is good and ride quality is first class. The steering is accurate and light.
But the gear change is slow and ...

Advantages: feels light, good driving, good family car Disadvantages: some electrical problems, awkward steering
My family owned a Megane, and seeing as the tendency of a teenager is to use his/her parents as a taxi driver, I've been in the car quite a few times!
Our car is an automatic, which I find kind of boring. However, when in it, you immediately feel how light it feels when driving it. It seems to fly along the road. The only problem is that you need to adapt your driving skills to the steering wheel, as it does not manipulate very well. However, it ... ...radio station and CD skip button controls on the other side of the steering wheel. The fuel economy is good - a tenner petrol will last you school drop-offs and pick-ups for a week, as well as a shopping trip or two in between. When the petrol light comes on, I would recommend getting yourself to a petrol station pretty quick. One definite advantage is the six-CD changer in the boot; it certainly beats fumbling about in the glovebox while driving ...

This car I have had for a year now. It's a 1998 R reg.
The inside of the car is adequate, there isn't anything fancy about this car, but its not very expensive either, having bought it for around £2500. The seats are rather soft and are indeed comfortable.
Most people would complain about lack of space for rear passengers, this car is different, the backs seats have plenty of legroom and enough headspace.

Renault Megane 1.4i fiji. Bought this car from a renault dealler in 2005 , after my father bought the 1.6 liter version. My mother bought a P-reg version of this car about 1 and a half years ago, and insured me to drive it as I could not (and still can't) afford a car (this is what University does to you).
After having driven only a Ford Fiesta 1.4 and a Citroen ZX 1.4i, this car was a revelation. It is still relatively quick for it's class in terms of acceleration and top speed. Indeed, when you are cruising down the motorway in 5th gear, you feel that another gear ... ...mph plus.
Allied to this, the seats are so comfortable that after a mid-distance drive or longer (30 miles plus) you feel that you could get out and have a cup of coffee then do the whole thing again.
Since my mother has possessed the car, it has not broken down on one occassion which is a far cry from her last car, the aforementioned Citroen ZX.
In conclusion, I would recommend this car to anyone in the small family hatchback market with only ...
