We bought a Renault Megane about 2 and a half years ago and have recently part exed it and upgraded to a Citroen C4. I feel I now have had enough experience with the Megane to be able to write a fair review about it. The car we opted for at the time was an 05 version of the Megane in black and it suited us perfectly as it was larger than the Punto we previously had, and was able to accomodate our family of four perfectly well. In comparison to the Punto, this car was lovely to drive and we were happy with it for a few months, but we soon started to see it's faults. The main gripe we had with ... more

Advantages Advantages Economical, reasonably comfortable, some nifty gadgets

Disadvantages Disadvantages I've been experiencing electrical faults; big blind spots

Background ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For me, driving is simply a method of getting from A to B. I don’t especially enjoy driving, and will happily be driven. Driving my husband around is a NIGHTMARE – he’s the world’s worst passenger seat driver. But I digress. My first car was an F-reg Lada Riva estate. It was a heap-o-junk. Anything after that had to be a bonus. Once we disposed of the Lada (which is a story in itself for another time and place), both my husband and I drove an F-reg Nissan Bluebird Turbo. It was blockish (we are talking 1988 make here), but quick off the ... more

Advantages Advantages smooth, quiet drive, economical on petrol low and cheap maintenance

Disadvantages Disadvantages seat belt as mentioned, parts are hard to come by in this country, parts are only shipped from France on a Monday

The Renault Megane 1.4 RT hatchback is my favourite car of all the cars I have ever driven. As I spend a lot of time driving for work, comfort and saftey are essential. As I am 5'6" I often find I have to draw the drivers seat right up to be able to reach the clutch and brake, but am then too far forward to use the accelerator comfortably. With the Renault Megane I have no need to draw up too far as the pedals seem to be almost tailor made for me! I don't bang my knees on the steering colum nor am I stretching to reach the pedals. The seats themselves are very comfortable, I have a problem ... more

I purchased a Renault Megane Hatch last year in August 2002, it was my first car as i had previously had motor bikes. Due to only being 21 and it being my first car + knowing that the model i wanted was the Dynamique i decided to check a few insurance quotes to see if i could stretch to the 1.6 model or whether i would be limited to the 1.4. After many £1000+ quotes i was getting no-where, finally i heard £917 fully comprehensive from Tesco for the 1.4 i decided that 1.6 was not to be, although this was still a high premium i wanted the car and knew that i could not better that quote. (I would ... more

Advantages Advantages Relatively cheap to buy, reasonable looking, good space, solidly screwed together

Disadvantages Disadvantages Utterly lacking in performance, main dealer service, started to become unreliable after 30k

My wife bought our Renault Megane in 1999 to replace a very dog eared Vauxhall Nova that she had driven for years. We both liked the look of the Megane and I had read some relatively good magazine reviews about the car so we hot footed it to the local main dealer to part ex the Nova. As a portent of doom, literally 300 yards away from the Renault garage, a lad in Ford Sierra (Halfords Special) GLS decided his brakes did'nt work and smashed into the back of us, neatly disabling the poor Nova for good. I let him off the hook though, he looked so frightened and the Nova was only worth about fifty ... more

If you have a young family, or are planning to start a family, this car is ideal. For the youngest passenger, the ISOFIX system offers the safest possible car seat fitting. No more worries about the harness being correct (which 80% of us regularly get wrong!). In addition to the usual airbags, there are curtain airbags to provide protection from side impact - contributing to the 5 star safety rating. For front seat children, airbags can be deactivated for safety reasons. For drivers, those of us without supermodel-long legs can not only pull the seat forward, but can also adjust the seat ... more

Advantages Advantages adjustable height seat, plenty of leg room in the back, boot space

Disadvantages Disadvantages if you are short and have the seat pulled forward, you hit your head on the sun visor if it's down. Blind spot at rear because of thick pillar near boot. Courtesy cars hard to get at Renault dealers! The new version is ugly

I had always bought Vauxhalls until I chose the Renault Megane- and I chose this based on the spec and the price. I was looking to do a personal lease , and At the time I chose it, it was very competitively priced compared with other similar sized cars offering a similar specification. I have an electric sun roof and mirrors and metallic paintwork, 5 doors,5 gears, a big boot, anti lock brakes, air conditioning (not that we need it in the North, but you never know!!), a fabulous CD player /cassette/radio player with 6 speakers..and there's lots of space in the back for 2 teenagers with long ... more

Advantages Advantages Large boot, 5 doors, good petrol consumption

    Disadvantages Disadvantages It's a Renault

I bought one of these a year ago from Reg Vardy for £6999, sand the car was 8 months old with 11'500 miles on the clock. It is a nice looking car in my opinion but for £7000, it was far cheaper than any other car in it's class. This car can be summed up as being practical. It's not quick, nor is it extremely comfortable, although it's quite good against it's competitors. The best thing is the fuel consumption at 42.6 mpg which is relatively high. The specification is poor without electric windows, although that's not something of major importance. The car can easily seat five people and ... more

    Advantages Advantages good ride, safety

    Disadvantages Disadvantages loses value quickly

The Renault Megane replaced the 19 saloon and hatch in 1996. Both the saloon and hatchback ranked close to the top of their class for interior space, ride, refinement and value. The Megane is roomy, has a good-looking interior, an enormous boot (although I knew of several meganes where the boot refused to open!) and decent spec. Handling is good and ride quality is first class. The steering is accurate and light. But the gear change is slow and residual values are poor. The megane is a comfortable motorway cruiser but most models suffer from a lack of power. On the safety front, the Megane ... more

Advantages Advantages feels light, good driving, good family car

Disadvantages Disadvantages some electrical problems, awkward steering

My family owned a Megane, and seeing as the tendency of a teenager is to use his/her parents as a taxi driver, I've been in the car quite a few times! Our car is an automatic, which I find kind of boring. However, when in it, you immediately feel how light it feels when driving it. It seems to fly along the road. The only problem is that you need to adapt your driving skills to the steering wheel, as it does not manipulate very well. However, it does have a few nifty features like the volume and radio station and CD skip button controls on the other side of the steering wheel. The fuel economy ... more
