Advantages: Looks good Disadvantages: Poor build, poor ride.
...got an invite to a Renault event where we could test drive cars as well as have a good nose around. So this op is based on this day.
I'm afraid I don't like this car at all.
It's a shame because on the whole I think Renault make some fantastic cars. My Clio is a great little car, and the new Laguna is simply superb!
But back to the Megane. I like its looks. It's a well proportioned stylish car that I was looking forward to driving.
But once you ... ...of the rest of the Renault range. There are numerous rattles and nothing has the quality look or feel to it that you might expect from a soft-top motor. The knobs and buttons looked and felt like they were not built to last, although I have no experience if they do last as I only have the one day's experience to judge on. The car I drove was no more than a couple of months old though, which makes me surprised that so many things rattled.
The ride? ...

...price and settled on the Renault Megane which I bought at under two years old for £12,000. My first experience was not a happy one as the car seemed to be all over the road and I had a few very hairy experiences on the M25 with the car wanting to do somersaults when I braked. My local Renault dealership were very quick to act and after examination, they changed the shock absorbers which sorted the problem out. However, I have subsequently been slightly ... ...had this problem with a Renault Megane convertible?
Since then, it has been pure, unadulterated fun! The electronic top is nifty and looks very smart going down and coming up and seems to be utterly fascinating to next door neighbours kids.....The stereo is fantastic and can be heard clearly when the top is down. The remote control stereo controls are very well designed and work perfectly. The boot space is extremely well designed and can fit all ...

Advantages: Stylish and surprisingly roomy in the boot Disadvantages: sluggish engine
The Meagane has a five star safety rating which was just the assurance I needed when I becam a first time mum. My two seater Tigra was no longer big enough to carry everything I needed, and the Meagne provided the stylish looks but practical features I required. The boot provided enough room for a large Silver Cross Pram and plenty of shopping as well. The seatbelts in the back where long enough to hold securely a baby seat and the storage compartments ... ...Megane is the 1.6litre engine feels sluggish and slow but the air conditioning, digital diplays, and fully retractable lid make up for its shortcomings. A lovely car for family to own but not one for the boy racers. Fuel consumption was excellent and despite reading reviews on poor retractable roof quality mine has not had a problem and has functioned perfectly every time. Beware - the bonnet is made of a very material (part of the safety features ...

...the usual ones, Peugeot 206, Renault Clio, Fiat Punto, etc. I had actually gone to the garage to view a Peugeot but was told it has been sold. The guy showed me the Megane and my initial thoughts were it was too big for the likes of me, me who is used to small hatchbacks! He persuaded me to do a test drive and after seeing the roof down, I bought it.
I was taken by the room in the back (compared to the Peugeot 206 cabriolet) and have had two adults ... ...I had sat in an MG and other such two seater cars and wondered if my daughter and I and all our baggage could possibly fit in - this seemed to have the best of both - sporty look plus additional seats/space.
I am subsequently quite pleasantly surprised by the amount of features this car has and I think the price - compared to others - is extremely reasonable. (I paid £9,500 for an 03 automatic model).
Of course I love the roof back, but it also ...

...French 2002 year built yellow Renault Megane Carbiolet Convertible in the UK .. it is fun, be prepared for a laugh and fantastic rides ... whatever the weather (except rain ;-)
A lot of possibilities with this car .. if you have never gotten on a ride with this car what are you thinking now? "Because of a small 4-seat convertible car you will lack of room" .... take the roof down (it only takes 30 seconds to manually lift it down) and you can accommodate ... ...much .. even though the Renault Megane Cabriolet may be surrounded by a "sporty" reputation like most cabriolet the build is not fantastic ... quite hard to accelerate, we feel bumps here and there, no ipod compatibility because of the year built.
OK ... now you know that this car has its personality and depending on your character you will just be fond of it or .. leave it! ...

Advantages: Really cool looking car Disadvantages: The weather here isn't good enough
I actually went to the showroom to buy a new Clio, but saw the 1.6 Megane Cabriolet and just fell in love with it. I took it for a test drive, then came back and took the Clio for a test - no comparison. It was a beautiful day and the roof was quickly powered down and off I went. And off I've been going ever since. The only niggles I had were in the first few weeks and were quickly sorted out by the dealer. My long term niggle is that I can't move ... ...day. I live in the West of Scotland and it rains a lot, but even on freezing cold dry days, the roof is down, my warm gloves and sheepskin jacket are on and off I go.
I travel between Glasgow and Aberdeen every week and it is a really comfortable car to drive. I would say however that the back seat is tiny and not for larger passengers. My father is 80 and has real difficulty in getting into the back, but we solve that by only letting him in the ...

I have just purchased a 1999 phase 1 megane cabriolet. The exact model is a 1.6e. OK so this model doesn't have the electric roof or mirrors, but really who wants a car where there are so many electrics which can go wrong? Not me. The hood on this car can be opened in less than 20 seconds, as oppose to the 1.5 minutes it takes for the electric roof to kick in. My specific car is a 1.6 engine and although quite powerful, it does not correspond with ... ...sluggish. This model comes with remote central locking, immobiliser, electric windows, manufacturers radio cassette with steering wheel controls and very luxury interior. Most of the models come with alloy wheels also as standard. It would appear that at the current petrol prices, this vehicle does in excess of 85 miles to £10.00. Now, this is not something one could complain about, since my fiat cinquecento 955cc only done 90 miles to £10.00. There ...

Added 28 April 2007:
This car is great value for money for a cabriolet. I bought this car as a second owner so gained the second 18 months of a 3 year manufacturers warrenty on it. I don't find any problem will the ride. I drive huge amounts of miles in it and always have a comfortable ride. All the miles I drive has only given my one problem and that is coil plugs. Supposedly a "common fault" on these cars. If the engine feel shuddery (couldn't ... ...it will be more than likely a coil plug needs to be replaced. I have found out that both the RAC and AA carry these on board!!
I don't find any problems with fuel consumption. I have read other comments where people complain that visability is poor out of the back window. This may be reduced from a normol glass window, however, the visability is no different to any other cabriolet. In fact if compared to the Street Ka, it is ten times better.

Advantages: Stylish Looks and head turning appeal Disadvantages: Cramped rear seating and dodgy electrics
Since buying a Renault Megane Dynamique Convertible in September 2001 I have had the following problems. Forst problem was that the Drivers electric window gets stuck on it's way up unless it's raining, then the outside temperature guage on the interior display went wrong showing the temperature as much higher than in actual was. Infact dureing the snow it told me it was 47 degress celcius outside - very wrong!!!
Also as it reached a year old it ... ...on my way home from work and left me stranded at blackheath. All four coils needed to be changed costing me £200 as it was just out of warranty. Other than that the car is fantastic and very enjoyable to look at. I'm 6ft 3in and most of my friends are tall so when we take it out only two people can go in it for lack of interior space. ...

Ok, this car looks great, and certainly turns heads, the powered hood, is a must, but the extra weight of all the electrics and pneumatics, seriously add weight to the car, and hampers the performance! After driving the cabrio, and then the standard 1.6 megane, you can feel the difference in performance, with the standard megane being lighter, and nippier! I am considering fitting an induction air filter to mine, and possibly a new exhaust, to bring ... ...would definitely consider the 2 litre version if i was to but another!
Also with the car being a cabriolet, the rear window is plastic, and at a very low slung angle, making it very difficult to see through it, when the hood is up! There is also little in the way of boot space, this can be remidied with a box being fitted in the back, but this sacrifices the rear seat!
The stereo is poor with only 2 low quality speakers in the front.
Other than ...
