Advantages Advantages Once you've bought the book you never need not to have a dose of brilliant reading close by ever again!

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't actually have Rupert Campbell Black!!

۞ 'Riders' is my absolute definitive favourite book in this whole wide world!! (well up until now anyway ....) Since I discovered it, which was totally by accident, and also the most rewarding accident that I have ever had, I have not left the country without this book!! It was Corfu 1993 when I first fell in love with Rupert Campbell Black, and have had an on going love affair with that man ever since, albeit one sided and set totally within the confines of my mind!! I still have my original copy of the book, it’s torn, it’s tatty, sun tan lotion spotted, dried drink spilt splodged ... more

Advantages Advantages An excellent read and one you'll want to read again

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't put it down!

Riders is the first in a series of six books (so far) by Jilly Cooper which will have you hooked right from the start. This book follows Rupert Campbell Black and his arch rival Jake Lovell as they fight for supremacy on the showjumping circuit. Rupert and Jake met as children at the boarding school where Jake’s mother was cook and Rupert was boarder. Because of Jake’s low birth added to the fact that he was a gypsy Rupert made his early life unbearable. When Jake qualifies for the British Showjumping team, Rupert takes great delight in making his life a misery once more. Rupert ... more

Advantages Advantages Good, long read, with excellent characters

Disadvantages Disadvantages It had to end!!

The first of the epic Cooper books featuring Rupert Campbell-Black and his feisty friends - this is a classic. My friends take the mickey out of me for reading what they call "trash" but at the end of the day, the characters become so real that whether you hate them or love them you have to know what happens to them. Set in the world of horse racing, this is a fast-paced book, detailing the loves and losses of a set of snobby, upper class, and incredibly good-looking people. Immerse yourself, as Rupert and Jake go head to head over the horses, and the women, in an intense rivalry, that is ... more

Advantages Advantages Great read, you'll really get involved in the book

    Disadvantages Disadvantages You'll want more.

I’ve just read ‘Rider’s for what must be at least the 20th time; I bought the book when it was new and now it looks as though it’s been around the world many times (although it actually has been taken to various places by me on holiday), tattered, cover almost falling off and the spine has a thousand breaks down it. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that this is an absolutely fantastic book that’s truly stood the test of time. It takes me only one or two days to read it as I can’t put it down. My one quibble is that it won’t fit under a plate whilst I’m eating. It starts in the 1970s, and ... more

Advantages Advantages Keep you entertained for hours

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

The series which starts with Riders is fantastic. Riders follows the life of Showjumping, in particular Rupert Campbell-Black, Billy Lloyd-Foxe and Jake Lovell . The storyline is fantastic, a lot of research has gone into the book and you can tell that Jilly Cooper is very proud of her work. I am the proud owner of a signed copy of Score, and I wouldn't part with it for anything. Rupert comes across as a complete pig, and Billy as a loveable rogue. Jake is the mysterious gypsy. Rupert falls for an american woman called Helen who adores him and thinks she can change his ways, however he carries ... more

Jilly Cooper is a genius, and this is, by common consent, one of her best novels. 'Riders' is blockbusting fiction that anyone can read, however much they usually sneer at this genre; she is highly regarded by critics and a number of English Literature professors. 'Riders' is a compelling read, introducing readers to the the sexy, charismatic Rupert Campbell-Black and galloping through a fast-paced plot of sex, show jumping and witty social satire to a touching denouement. Even people who have no interest in horses will be interested, although the book would probably be less attractive to ... more

Advantages Advantages Romping, funny and a series of books to get though!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Never made into a good film!

This was the first Jilly Cooper novel I read and not only did I want to live in gloucester amongst these horsey, wealthy, sex pots I needed the next installment like a junkie! So yes I re-read Riders again and again absorbing the unscupulous lifestyle of the horsey set, the bed hopping of hunky show jumpers and the loose and lusty stable grooms. The story is based around the gorgeous Rupert Campbell-Black, anm upper class show jumping genius and his desire to beat everything and everyone in and out of the show ring. Ruperts redeemiing feature is his best friend Billy who is the only person he ... more

This book is so my number 1 favourite! Based around R C black and jake lovell that met at bording school when they were young. Meeting now in later life challenging each other in the world of showjumping. Not only the showjumping they end up rivals over a female, firstly she is with rupert cambell black and then fell for jake lovell. It does have it lows and shows how jake battles on from his gypsey life and how hard he works, to be who he becomes, sad moments when one of jakes top horses is put down. But this intense book just brings it to your attention we go through the same in reality ... more
