Having read some of the other reviews on this product I felt that I had to get a point across to other potential buyers. Many people seemed a bit miffed about the memory space on this item (32mb as standard). Well they have every right to be a bit miffed although I must defend this hardware. You see, I have a Rio600, yes just the basic model, but with 128mb of memory all for 95 pounds. How I hear you say. Well the secret is, as is for all technology, ... ...mine off of Amazon with the free 96mb because it had been out a while and customer reviews had filter through that there wasn't enough memory. ...that’s write my nice new RIO is broken again. Well that’s what I was saying a couple of months ago. I bought the player from Dixons (rem: to take out the insurance) it worked well infact brill, love mountain biking (CHECK OUT MY REVIEWS) and the player enjoyed the hills, I’m an avid climber and it worked well taped to my arm strap when climbing.
As you can see I put my player through a lot of crap (literally in the case of mountain ... ...if I fall off it could be in pieces and costing as much as it did I thought I’d better be able to replace it. Having had no crashes and no falls while climbing (I only bolder, not the cliff thing), I’ve still had the player fail twice, once I think it was the ear phone piece that went the other was a complete nack- the screen just went blank and complete stop. ...the mp3 player the "DIAMOND RIO 600" has taken me by complete surprise. It is a technology that I have wanted for a while worth the wait, I should say so.
The ease of use of this mid range mp3 player (£149 - £169) has to be experienced to be believed. It is very light and ergonomically designed, it has a simple LCD (Backlit) display and although has only 32 Mb Flash memory, this can be extended, initially to 64 Mb and then to 372 Mb. Which in layman's ... ...there.
Other things: The Rio 600 has been designed so that you can of course extend the memory, but that is not all it has been designed to play MP3 and WMA but you will be able to upgrade to other formats as and when they are contrived/released.
Disadvantages:
Well its the memory size, if you are PC literate you will know that it is the most expensive thing to buy, so the cost of the backpack to extend to 64 MB music storage or 2 hrs of music ...

Using the Rio is a breeze. At the top of the unit is an on/off switch, and the rest is controlled from the front panel with obvious controls such as volume, play, pause back and forward. The menu option takes you to a screen that allows you to customise the EQ, with preset options for 'Normal', 'Jazz', 'Classic', 'Rock', etc, plus a 'Custom' option for your own settings. You can delete songs from the device, plus set track repeat and ... ...does find files that the Rio can’t play, such as Real Audio). Copying selected tracks to a playlist for upload to the Rio is fairly straightforward, and the speed of transfer via USB is quite impressive.
All in all, a good sound, with a good range of features in a nice size. A good buy! ...

It certainly has the advantage of being packaged well. The size hyas to be seen in person to be believed. It's not the smallest, but like a mobile phone, MP3 players suffer from being too small and figity. The 600 is just the right size. Think in terms of a wallet full of credit cards.
The ergonomics are fantastic too, with buttons placed as carefully as those on the dash ... ...what I heard in the Rio matches anything Sony can offer.
But that is where the success of the 600 ends, because it offers a poultry amount of space in which to hold your tunes. Presuming you're not too educated in the geeky world of computer-speak, the Rio 600 offers only 32 mgs of memory, expandable to 64 mgs.
In English this roughly translates to about an album's worth of music. And how quickly are you going to get bored with listening to 14 ...

Had my RIO for about 2 months now, and its been pretty reliable...
The unit is curvy, clean, and well-designed to fit into the palm of your hand. It is finished in a rubberized-blue coating, weighing about the same as two AA sized batteries (it's powered by a single AA battery) Memory and battery are accessable by sliding off a 'backpack'. Externally there is just an on/hold/off switch and a dual purpose USB and headphone socket. A matching protective ... ...the upgrade is a custom RIO backpack, so you pay extra compared to other SmartMedia based players.
The unit is connected to PC's thru a standard USB port, so transfer times for audio are quite quick. As well as excellent ripping and encoding software CD supplied with the RIO, there are drivers for popular audio programs such as Microsoft Windows Media Player too.
While using the unit the battery life has been reasonable averaging around 9-10hrs. ...

...have been told that the Rio 600 was one of the MP3 players that began the craze a few years ago. This I am not sure of, please tell me if my information is wrong. I feel however that it is a bit dated nowadays. I think I may return and buy a newer more up to date one! This is for the following reasons---
1. The player is all plastic. It's whole casing and protection system is plastic. Hence one little fall could damage it completely, not good if ... ...easy to use software called Rio Audio Manager 3. This is fast to transfer MP3 and has a very good user interface.
Overall I think the advantages do not outweigh the advantages. Yes it looks good, but this does not outweigh the practical problems that come with it. You can't store much music, you can't play it for that long due to low battery life, and if you if it falls from a distance it will be most likely damaged.

...wonderful piece of technology, the Rio 600. Its not strictly an mp3 player, it is a Digiral Audio Player, as it can play windows media files as well as mp3's. It has a 32mb memory, and can hold up to 30 minutes of mp3 or a whole hour of windows media files. It comes with brilliant software to create windows media and mp3. It is fully future proof, as its chips can be upgraded. It uses a USB connection for your PC, so it is easy to transfer the music ... ...only bad bit about the rio 600 is the headphones supplied. They make you look like a big idiot, and are surprisingly difficult to put on. It is extremely easy to use, even for technophobics with no idea of how to use technology. At £150, it is a very competitive price for what you get compared to other alternatives. I highly recommend this product. ...

The rio 600 is upgradable, it is reported to be able to be updated as new standards or features arer released. This hould stop it from becoming an expensive piece of plastic that becomes useless.
It currently plays mp3 and wma files, which should cover most people. It has good onboard features such as the ability to make playlists from the music on board. You can even keep the files in a directory structure when on the player! ... ...sound is good, and gets better with decent headphones. The battery life is good when you use it often, however it can soon dissapear within weeks when you leave it on the side, without using it. However it getsd 10 hours out of a normal AA batery, so you can't complain.
The software that comes with it can be useful is you are new to the area of mp3 and wma. It allows you to copty tracks from cds into these formats, but is not as good as some freeware ...

...So, I recently bought the Rio 600 MP3 player for about 150 quid. At 32MB, it holds about 8 songs (still not a lot).
The main reason I bought the Rio over the host of other players was its size and styling. It is about as big as a pack of cigarettes. It has a sleek, curvy, sporty look and come with a color faceplate that can be replaced with other colored faceplates. The blue color faceplate that come with the unit looks very attractive. The controls ... ...instruction manual for 5 minutes until I had learned to operate the thing. The USB connectivity allows an average MP3 song to download in a few seconds. It has basic random/repeat controls and you can control bass/treble settings. On a single AA battery, you have 10 hours of play time.
