Insurance premiums are a subject that I feel quite strongly about, yet one that I cannot conjure up a decent argument for in my head - hopefully this opinion will make some sense!! I've been driving since just after I turned 17 (A Level Maths tells me that's coming up for 4 years now!) My big problem though, is that I have always liked cars with that bit more go. There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind someone doing 45mph on a nice, clear road, and your car just doesn't have the ooommmpphh to get past safely. It makes you more dangerous as a driver, as you are taking more of ... more

(update1) Erm, apologies, like most good ciao writers I write my opinions in Word, I didn't realise that my Single European currency opinion had in fact been published as I wrote this opinion, sorry. (update2) after reading this I suggest you read the comment by boydgray he adds a lot of useful insight into my argument. (Original opinion) Since my opinion on the European Single Currency has not been published, I guess it’s time to write another opinion before everybody forgets who I am. I could have written an opinion on the forthcoming Jennifer Lopez CD, but I think I’ll give the ... more

Lets say I'm the owner of an Insurance Company and to break my way into the market I specialise in cars. I advertise in the national press, which isn't cheap, I have to get policyholders somewhere. Having already read the statistics from other insurance companies, now that I'm a member, I find out that the highest number of claims come from drivers in the 17 to 25 age group so I have to estimate my premium collection against my suspected liabilities. I have to keep my premiums down to attract new policyholders. I don't really want the 17 to 25 group they cost me money so I'll make it expensive ... more

Advantages Advantages You can fight for payment in the event of an accident.

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you don't have an accident, it's money down the drain. Getting money out of an insurance company is like the 'getting blood out of a stone' scenario. I can only 'recommend to potential buyers' because it's illegal to drive without insurance.

Before I begin, I want to make it clear that I am not interested in starting a 'men vs women' argument here, but there are points to be made on that issue and I have no reservations about making them, and I can only hope that my comments will not offend. My apologies if that's the case. In modern society, a society where the chasm between men and women has long since become a mere crack in the pavement and never-ending campaigns for sexual equality for women, why is it, that there are insurance companies who do not insure men? Where's the equality in that?! Let's face it. A car is a car, and a ... more

Advantages Advantages Might help you out if you have an accident

Disadvantages Disadvantages Costs a fortune, insurance companies try not to pay out, legal requirement to have insurance

Every year since I passed my test and got my first car, I have been screwed over by insurance companies because I was a young male student. When I started working, my insurance didn't come down because I was no longer a student, but when I went back to university as a mature student and my motor insurance was up for renewal, I was sent a quote and phoned them to tell them that my details had changed and I was now a student again. The told me that that changes things and increased my premium by fifty pounds. I was the same person that I had been two months earlier, but because I was a student ... more

Advantages Advantages Got to be insured to drive legally

Disadvantages Disadvantages Like flushing your hard earned cash away

I have recently been trying to get insured by myself instead of being on my dad’s policy, but apparently insurance companies consider me a threat because I fall into the 'young driver' category. I recently got given a quote on £12,840 (I have the e-mail to confirm it) from Cornhill Insurance for my R-reg. Rover 214, and that was based on a 3rd party insurance policy. I think it’s a disgrace that young drivers should be taken advantage of in this manner. More & more young people are driving uninsured on Britains roads and the amazing thing is that if your caught by the police ... more

You can beat the rising cost of car insurance if you know where to look and what to do. Firstly don't stick with the same insurer year after year, if you do your costs will go up. Shop around each year, get quotes from several reputable companies direct you will often pick up a discount from them just for being a new customer. Avoid insurance brokers, cut out the middle man and go to the big insurers direct. Use the internet to shop around for cheaper insurance, there are several reputable companies offering insurance on-line and other companies where you can do an on-line search for the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Reductions in premiums.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs some time and effort!

1.WHEN YOUR RENEWAL comes in, dont just accept it. Contact on-line insurers, telephone insurers, and your local brokers. 2.CONSIDER CHANGING from comprehensive to third party, fire, and theft if you have an older car. 3.CONSIDER who can drive your car. Young drivers and those with poor accident records will incur heavier premiums. 4.CONSIDER insuring the car in your wifes name. Women owners always attract lower premiums than men! 5.CONSIDER a higher voluntary excess, as this will always lower your premium. 6.ALWAYS park you car in your garage, as this will be more secure, and your premium will ... more

Advantages Advantages If you have a full on smash you can claim.

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you don't have a smash you don't get any reductions

Young drivers think that they are being unfairly treated by insurance companies, but let me put you straight. I am 30 years old and have been driving since I was 18 years old. I have never had a speeding ticket, parking fine and have never been pulled over by the Police. So why when I went to insure my car did they want over £1,200 for insurance. That was not one of the dearest quotes, needless to say I never bothered with the car and now rely on public transport. I have the use of my husbands car when he is not using it, but I refuse to pay so much when I have never claimed. The average car ... more

A new revolutionary method of paying for your car insurance may well be available to European motorists by 2001. "Pay-As-You-Drive", where drivers pay rates varying between 0.9 and 5 pence a mile instead of an annual premium, is already available to U.S. motorists. Using new G.P.S.(Global Positioning Satellite) technology to track vehicles, the insurance is then charged out by the mile or by the minute. The rates charged would vary depending on the age and experience of the driver, and higher rates would be charged for city and night driving, when most accidents take place. By contrast ... more
