Advantages Advantages Got rid of my acne and my life is so much better!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad side effects, long process, can be dangerous.

I was unfortunate enough to encounter something terrible when I hit the magic age of 13, that being the horrendous condition known as ‘Acne’. Obviously there are some horrendous diseases and illnesses around and Acne is considered as a very minor condition, but you don’t know the pain it causes until you actually experience it for yourself and me having to put up with the pure embarrassment of having a face that resembles a Baboons backside! I hit the magic age of 13 when the whole ‘puberty thing’ started and it was not long until I started noticing my greasy skin, of which was followed by ... more

Advantages Advantages It gets rid of spots forever

Disadvantages Disadvantages suicide, dry skin, see review

Sorry if the title is offensive. I'm just poking fun at the side effects. I deal with this in a light hearted way, because that's how I dealt with it at the time. Now many of you have read my suicides in the family review. I started taking this drug after the 1st uncle had killed himself. I was still taking it when the 2nd killed himself. However, I neglected to tell my doctor this, because I knew it would mean they'd take me off the drug. My uncles had nothing to do with depression and none of my family have suffered it. I would not recommend this product to anyone to be honest. The side ... more

Advantages Advantages Helps get rid of Acne.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of side effects.

Most of my close friends know I am a retired nurse but they still come to me with their medical conditions. Many people get spots, in or around puberty and often for a long into the future. Consequently, many my friends with children reaching adolescence often ask drugs that are on the market for this problem or that problem. (I am sure many nurses will know this scenario!) On common misconception is that spots, ‘zits’ and blackheads are caused by grim or an incorrect diet (Yes lots of chocolate, wrong!). Spots often occur in places where there are many sebaceous glands: the back, the chest or ... more

I used to suffer from acne. From the ages of about 12 to 15 it was at its worst. During these years I often went to the doctor and would be put on various medications, NONE of which worked. These treatments varied from tetracycline (an orally taken antibiotic), Zineryt (a liquid applied directly to the affected areas) and various others creams and lotions. It was very disheartening to try all these medications and for them not to work. Some in fact made my skin worse, especially the creams containing Benozyl Peroxide as this has a very drying effect. My face became red and raw and very painful ... more

Advantages Advantages Acne free skin for life.

Disadvantages Disadvantages High cost (in England), numerous side effects, abstinence from alcohol (England again).

We have all heard numerous accounts of Roaccutane, however many people tend to focus on the side effects of the drug rather that its effectiveness. Roaccutane is not merely a treatment for acne; in many cases, it is a cure. Put briefly, acne is a result of excess sebum (this is the natural oil that hydrates our skin) production from the sebaceous glands. These glands are all over our body but are most numerous about the face, chest, shoulders, and upper back. This is why acne develops in these specific places. Roaccutane works essentially by restricting sebum production and it has been ... more

I wasn’t going to write an op on Roaccutane as earlier Moose wrote an excellent op on this drug and she asked me to give my professional opinion on the drug and I commented on the op mentioning the things which I thought were necessary and thought that was enough, until I realised a few things that lead me to the decision that clarification of few things were required from a professional point of view. First of all it is in the category of Over the counter medicine which to the best of my knowledge is not true and misleading (I have requested Ciao staff to change this.) because although ... more

Advantages Advantages Worked for me, completely clear skin

Disadvantages Disadvantages Controversial, possible serious side effects

I suggested this product so that I would be able to give an honest opinion and my actual experience of this extremely controversial drug. Roaccutane (or medical name Isotretinoin) is a drug used to treat acne, it belongs to a group of medicines called retinods (similar to vitamin A). It works by reducing the amount of oil (sebum) that is produced by the skin. You can only obtain the drug from a dermatologist after numerous tests. All of my teens I suffered from mild acne (when I say mild I mean I always had about 3 or 4 spots constantly on my face), I had tried various lotions, creams ... more

Advantages Advantages The spots almost completely leave

Disadvantages Disadvantages having to manage side effects

From the age of about 14, I suffered from sever acne. I had large, painful spots on most of my body, and especially on my face. I used pretty much every antibiotic and topical treatment, without any success. A friend had a lot of results with roaccutane, so I got my dermatologist to put me on the programme, when I was 20. Within 4 months of starting the treatment I never had a single spot on my body! It's been 2 years since I stopped the roaccutane, and I generally only have 1 or 2 spots on my face, and only if I drink heavilly. If you've had bad acne, you'll know what a difference that makes ... more
